The following statistical results were obtained: 1) The total number of the specimens examined was 2705, 2026 from the dental clinic and 679 from the medical clinic. 2) Concerning age distribution, most specimens from the dental clinic were from patients in the 40's age bracket, whereas most from the medical clinic were from those under 10 years of age. With regard to sex distribution, the difference between males and females was not so much in the dental clinic specimens, but the number from the medical clinic was greater for males than for females. 3) Concerning classification of the tumors from the dental clinic, 181 cases were benign; and of them 41 were odontogenic and 140 were non-odontogenic tumors. Among the odontogenic tumors, ameloblastoma, cementoma, and odontoma were the most numerous. Among non-odontogenic tumors, fibroma was the most common, followed by pleomorphic adenoma. Malignant tumors comprised 77 cases. Of them squamous cell carcinoma was the most commonly found, with the grade-2 type being most numerous. Of the medical clinic tumors, nevus was the most common benign tumor observed; and adenocarcinoma, the most common malignant one. 4) Concerning the distribution of main lesions in the dental clinic specimens, most specimens were cysts or cystic lesions, followed by inflammatory lesions and tumors. Among medical clinic specimens, inflammatory lesions were the most common. 5) Regarding the dental clinic specimens, the most frequently observed case was the radicular cyst (301 samples) among the odontogenic cysts (514 samples); and among non-odontogenic cysts (290 samples), the most common was the mucous cyst (159 samples). 5) In terms of the distribution by location, tissue or organ, most tumors from the dental clinic were from the jaws, followed in descending frequency by those from gingiva and alveolar mucosa, maxillary sinus, lip, buccal mucosa, and tongue. Over the past 3 years and 2 months, 130 patients with certain medical problems underwent 162 cases of dental treatment under local anesthesia. In the present study, research was done chiefly on intraoperative management of these patients. The following results were obtained: 1) In the population of 130 patients, those in their 7th decade were the most numerous. Among the subjects, essential hypertension was the most common underlying disease, and the majority of the patients had accompanying cardio-vascular diseases. 2) When the pre- and post-65-year-old patient groups were compared, the latter group had a higher frequency of multiple medical problems. 3) It is suggested that, to manage patients having hypertension or ischemic heart diseases as a complication, continuous blood pressure measurement and ECG monitoring are essential. 4) Among several local anesthetics, 3% prilocaine with 0.03 U/ml felypressin was used most frequently, especially for those with cardiovascular diseases. 5) In the management of hypertensive and ischemic heart patients, nitrous oxide inhalation sedation was effective. 6) For those who required vasodilation, administration of nifedipine or nitroglycerin was effective. 7) Although one case of syncope and another in which dental treatment procedure had to be suspended were found, no severe complications were encountered.
","PeriodicalId":77571,"journal":{"name":"Meikai Daigaku shigaku zasshi = The Journal of Meikai University School of Dentistry","volume":"19 3","pages":"407-17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13305603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cells cultured in a 5-cm dish were sonicated with 0.4 to 0.5 ml of 50 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.8, and a 50 microliters aliquot was used for one assay. After the GTP cyclohydrolase reaction, dihydroneopterin triphosphate, the reaction product, was oxidized and dephosphorylated to form neopterin (NP); and the pterins in the reaction mixture were then analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Mainly three peaks of pterins were detected in the eluate from the HPLC column: they were NP, BP, and 2-amino-4-hydroxypteridine (AHP). The amount of NP was a measure of the enzyme activity. On the other hand, a significant part of the biopterin contained in the enzyme sample was converted to AHP during the GTP cyclohydrolase reaction. Therefore, the sum amount of BP plus AHP was a measure of total BP content in the enzyme sample (sonicate of PC12h cells). The method is convenient and useful to study the actions and action mechanisms of various biologically active substances on the BP level of pheochromocytoma cells in culture.
","PeriodicalId":77571,"journal":{"name":"Meikai Daigaku shigaku zasshi = The Journal of Meikai University School of Dentistry","volume":"19 2","pages":"197-203"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13125877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[Stability of screw fixation following sagittal splitting osteotomy of the mandibular ramus].","authors":"M Eba","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Recently, sagittal splitting osteotomy of the mandibular ramus is frequently performed in orthognathic surgeries of mandibular deformities. Although the surgical technique has been established. Methods for osteosynthesis following sagittal spitting of mandibular ramus still remain unestablished. Osteosynthesis is usually achieved by circumferencial wiring, interosseous wiring or screw fixation. It is unknown which of these three methods is best suited from dynamic and clinical point of view. The author carried out a simulation study of screw fixation using acrylic resin plate models and sagittally split air-dried human mandibles. The following result were obtained: 1) In the fixation experiment using an acrylic resin plate and AO cortical bone screws, a significantly smaller displacement was recorded by S3E type fixation, compared with other modes of fixation. In determining the amount of stress required for causing displacement, S3D type fixation required a significantly larger stress, compared with other modes of fixation. 2) In the destruction experiment using an acrylic resin plate and AO cortical bone screws, the critical displacement measured was significantly smaller by S3E type fixation compared with other modes of fixation S3C type fixation required a significantly larger amount of stress to cause destruction. 3) In the fixation experiment using the air-dried human mandibles and alumina ceramic screws, a significantly smaller displacement was recorded by 2-alumina ceramic screw fixation, compared with other modes of fixation. In determining the amount of stress required for causing displacement, 3-alumina ceramic screw fixation required a larger stress, compared with other modes of fixation. 4) In the fixation experiment using the air-dried human mandible and AO cortical bone screws, a significantly smaller displacement was recorded by 2-AO cortical bone screw fixation, compared with other modes of fixation. In determining the amount of stress required for causing displacement, 3-AO cortical bone screw fixation required a larger stress, compared with the 2-AO type of fixation. The above experimental results suggest that when the sagittally split proximal cortical plate retains enough thickness for tapping, clinical application of screw fixation either with alumina ceramic or AO cortical bone screws produces an adequately high anti-displacement effect, even if only 2 screws are used. However, when stability is evaluated in terms of the resistance to stress, 3-screw fixation is considered to amply satisfy the resistance required.
","PeriodicalId":77571,"journal":{"name":"Meikai Daigaku shigaku zasshi = The Journal of Meikai University School of Dentistry","volume":"19 3","pages":"356-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13289757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

LPS was isolated from A. actinomycetemcomitans Y4 by the hot phenol-water procedure (A-LPS). A marked IL-1 production by peritoneal macrophages treated with A-LPS was observed in the cells from C3H/HeN mice, but not in those from C3H/HeJ mice. LPSs from A. actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 29522 and 29523 exhibited the same inducing activity for IL-1 production as did A-LPS. The IL-1 production with A-LPS was inhibited drastically when the LPS was pretreated with polymyxin B. A-LPS-induced IL-1 production was augmented significantly by treatment of the cells with a inhibitor, indomethacin, but not with a lipooxygenase inhibitor, nordihydroguariatic acid. The augmenting effect occurred as early as 3 hr after treatment of indomethacin. In light of recent studies showing that IL-1 plays a regulatory role in bone remodeling systems, the present result suggest the possibility that A-LPS-induced IL-1 may play a significant role in mechanism(s) of alveolar bone resorption in juvenile periodontitis and also that its production may be regulated by prostaglandins.
","PeriodicalId":77571,"journal":{"name":"Meikai Daigaku shigaku zasshi = The Journal of Meikai University School of Dentistry","volume":"19 2","pages":"277-85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13289003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
