{"title":"Pressure relief characteristics of a new foam overlay: a preliminary performance evaluation.","authors":"A E Hover,&nbsp;T A Krouskop","doi":"10.1097/00152192-199203000-00011","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1097/00152192-199203000-00011","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>To evaluate a newly designed foam mattress to be used by patients who are susceptible to pressure ulcers, interface pressures that are produced between body and mattress were measured with the Mini-Texas interface pressure evaluator (Tee-Kay Applied Technology, Inc., Stafford, Texas). Fifteen subjects with builds that ranged from thin to large were measured at four body locations--the scapular area, sacral area, trochanter, and heel. The interface pressure measurements were found to increase with body size in the sacral and heel areas. This article summarizes important principles of surgical techniques in the construction of ileostomy and care of the ileostomy and its complications. X-ray studies of the upper gastrointestinal tract and the barium enema are commonly ordered gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures. The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of upper gastrointestinal tract and barium enema x-ray studies on a person's sleep pattern, fatigue, anxiety, blood pressure, pulse, and perceived energy expenditure. Outpatients were assigned to established groups by their ordered x-ray procedure (i.e. barium enema [n = 36], upper gastrointestinal tract x-ray procedure [n = 31], or nonpreparation procedure [n = 36]). Persons who were undergoing a barium enema rated sleep significantly poorer, awakened a greater number of times during the night, and perceived greater energy expenditure during the procedure. This study has implications for the teaching and safety of patients who are undergoing gastrointestinal radiography. Because this population is growing, many methods of treatment for urinary incontinence have been developed. However, even though the behavioral techniques have been available for years, only recently has the use of formal behavioral methods become more popular as a less invasive alternative for the treatment of incontinence. These methods have proven effective in several series.
