Prevention and management of ileostomy complications.

Abstract

In spite of multiple advances in surgical techniques such as restorative proctocolectomy and pelvic pouch surgery, the creation of a satisfactory ileal stoma and the proper management of ileostomy complications are often overlooked. This article summarizes important principles of surgical techniques in the construction of ileostomy and care of the ileostomy and its complications. The key to management of many complications is prevention.
