Participating in this study were 31 patients with Parkinson's disease, 36 patients with hemiplegia and 60 patients without any neurological damage. After rehabilitation, 61.1% of hemiplegic, 40% patients without neurological damage and 29% of parkinson disease patients reached the same ambulation capacity level present before the fracture. Patients suffering from Parkinson disease showed an important loss of ambulation which was statistically significant compared to the control group. The loss of deambulatory capacity was not statistically significant in hemiplegic group. According to the authors' opinion, this result depends on correlated damages or on poor collaboration typically present in patients with Parkinson disease.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"18 1-3","pages":"51-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20253369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In susceptible persons, adverse health effects occur at a lower exposure than in the majority of population. The reason for this, though often weak, can usually be ascertained. The paper focuses primarily on host factors that may increase an individual's susceptibility to air pollutants present in the general environment. These factors include genetic background, age, gender, nutritional status, physiological status, presence of coexisting lung disease, and lifestyle. They relate to various mechanisms of individual susceptibility to air pollutants from the environment into the body, to alterations in detoxification and immunological reactions, and to variations in the responsiveness of lung tissues. Several epidemiological techniques to detect biological events relevant to host susceptibility and disease progression are mentioned. They are mainly based on genetic traits, host characteristics, pulmonary function tests, biochemical and immune changes. Measuring the variations in risk among susceptible individuals is necessary to assess correctly respiratory health risk due to inhaled pollutants at the population level, and subsequently to develop rational public health policy to reduce the incidence of those diseases in a given population. Before being able to formulate this policy, however, one must know how to detect those individuals who are susceptible to air pollutants.","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"18 1-3 1","pages":"63-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65967333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each patient was submitted to Ecodoppler, angiography and the \"Treadmill test\". Two bioptic muscle of these patients. A sample was used for the spectrophotometric and spectrophotofluorimetric determinations of: glycogen, pyruvate, lactate, citrate, alpha-ketoglutarate, malate, aspartate, glutamate, AMP, ADP, ATP and creatine phosphate (CP). The other bioptic sample was used to determine the following enzyme activities: hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase, succinate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, total NADH cytochrome c reductase, cytochrome oxidase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. Patients showed an increase in lactate dehydrogenase, total NADH cytochrome c reductase and succinate dehydrogenase activities, a decrease in glycogen, ATP and CP concentrations. Telethermographic data showed patient muscle thermic emission quantitatively different from control group. The telethermographic test can be used as an additional diagnostic tool to determine and monitor the efficiency of a muscle undergoing metabolic failure.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"18 1-3","pages":"41-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20227468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each of these patients carried out a standardized rehabilitative training and underwent an isokinetic evaluation immediately before and at 3, 4 and 6 months after ACL reconstruction. The considered parameters were the increasing of both strength and work in the standardized times at the angular speed of 60 and 180 degrees/sec. Our results, compared to the pre surgery, showed a high decrease of both strength and work at the third month after surgery, especially regarding the extensor muscles (-44% and -38% respectively); we observed an increase between the third and the fourth month, even if the parameters of the extensors still remain much lower than the controlateral healthy side.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"18 1-3","pages":"73-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20250573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Variations in serum prolactin and cortisol levels and in urinary catecholamines levels were studied in fishermen exposed to a persistent overwork period of deep-sea fishing. Results indicate that prolactin was rapidly modified. In fact, the serum prolactin levels already increased on the first day and maximum levels were observed on the fifth day. On the contrary, the physiological rise and fall in the serum levels of cortisol were scarcely influenced on the first day while on the fifth day increased in the morning and fell in the evening in a very significant manner. No significant variation in urinary catecholamine levels was observed at the end of fifth day. These results suggest that, unlike for prolactin, the effects of stress on serum levels of cortisol are complex and, under our conditions, could be due, at least in part, to the duration of the stress and to the functional moment of pituitary-adrenal axis.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"18 1-3","pages":"101-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20252785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Vanadate and cardiovascular system.","authors":"M Carmignani, A R Volpe, P Boscolo, G Ripanti, G Giuliano","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Rats were given 1, 10, 40, or 100 ppm of vanadium in drinking water for seven months, while rabbits received 1 ppm of vanadium (as sodium metavanadate, NaVO3) in drinking water for twelve months. Rats developed arterial hypertension through complex effects of vanadium on central neurogenic pathways, central and periferal catecholaminergic mechanisms, specific autacoidal systems (kallikrein-kinin, reninangiotensin-aldosterone, enkephalin ones), and effectors (vessels and heart). The above effects of vanadium were in part confirmed in the rabbits which, however, did not show arterial hypertension since the increase of vascular resistance was counteracted by a reduction of both cardiac inotropism and cardiac output. Vanadium was accumulated in tissues as vanadyl; higher levels were found in the bone and in the kidney, but relevant amounts were determined in aorta, heart and brain. There was evidence, in the rabbits, that vanadium reduces synthesis and/or release of nitric oxide, the endothelium-derived vasodilating factor, likely through a reduced formation from bradykinin. The functional, analytical and morphological results obtained in this study show that chronic exposure to vanadium induces arterial hypertension by mechanisms only in part related to the levels and times of exposure, and to the species.
","PeriodicalId":77147,"journal":{"name":"Giornale italiano di medicina del lavoro","volume":"17 1-6","pages":"51-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19904510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
