{"title":"The concept of nation-state in Italian elementary school children: spontaneous concepts and effects of teaching.","authors":"A E Berti, C Benesso","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, the definitions given by kindergarteners, third graders, and sixth graders (N = 60) for several political terms were searched for a characteristic-to-defining-shift (Keil, 1989). The children were presented with seven words: kingdom, king, border, tax, soldier, capital city, and policeman and were asked (a) if and where they had ever heard each of them and, if they had, (b) to explain their meanings. Kindergarten children did not know most of the terms or defined them mainly by means of characteristic but nondefining features. The third graders appeared to represent the state only in physical terms. Soldiers and policemen were described as employees but not as public servants. In Experiment 2, the extent to which children's misconceptions can be changed through explicit instruction was examined. A curriculum lasting about 16 hr was implemented with a group of fourth graders (N = 30). On pretest, most of the children depicted the state in the same ways as the third graders had in Experiment 1. After the curriculum implementation, nearly all of the children showed a political conception of the state, describing it not only in terms of a territory in which a population is settled but also in terms of government.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"124 2","pages":"185-209"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20518269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Emotional dissonance in organizations: antecedents, consequences, and moderators.","authors":"R Abraham","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Emotional dissonance, or person-role conflict originating from the conflict between expressed and experienced emotions, was examined. The study was based on a reconceptualization of the emotional labor construct, with dissonance as a facet rather than a consequence of emotional labor. The effects of emotional dissonance on organizational criteria were isolated, thereby explaining some of the conflicting results of earlier studies. Empirically, job autonomy and negative affectivity as antecedents of emotional dissonance, and emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction as consequences of emotional dissonance, were explored. Self-monitoring and social support were tested as moderators of the emotional dissonance-job satisfaction relationship. Significant relationships with job autonomy, emotional exhaustion, and job satisfaction were found. Social support significantly moderated the emotional dissonance-job satisfaction relationship.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"124 2","pages":"229-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20518199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Parafoveal identification asymmetry: interactive effects of shape and color. 中央凹旁识别不对称:形状和颜色的交互作用。

{"title":"Parafoveal identification asymmetry: interactive effects of shape and color.","authors":"G Chastain","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

If two adjacent letters project to the parafoveal region of the retina, both accuracy and discriminability measures have revealed that a letter flanked to its foveal side is identified more accurately than a letter the same distance from the fovea that is flanked to its peripheral side. This parafoveal identification asymmetry is greater if the letters are dissimilar in shape than if they are similar. Color and brightness were introduced as variables in the present experiments. The identification asymmetry was greatest for dissimilar letters in different (complementary) colors. Although those colors differed also in brightness, two letters that were achromatic but merely different in brightness did not produce an asymmetry interaction with shape. Interletter separation was varied between .15 and 1.95 deg, and the pattern of results just described persisted across both distances. The synergistic interaction of shape relation and color relation in determining the amount of identification asymmetry suggests that color and shape affect perceptual processing at the same level.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"124 2","pages":"211-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20518270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Accuracy in identifying affect in child and adult faces and voices and social competence in preschool children.","authors":"S Nowicki, J Mitchell","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The association between social competence and preschool children's ability to identify affect in child and adult facial expressions and tones of voice was investigated in 2 studies. A Sullivan theoretical framework was used. Results indicate that gender plays an important role in the association. For boys, accuracy in identifying low-intensity adult faces and, to a lesser extent, low-intensity adult voices was related to social competence regardless of whether social competence was being measured in interactions with other children or with adults. In contrast, for girls, the ability to read high-intensity expressions across child and adult faces and voices was more specifically related to social competence, depending on whether it was defined by interactions with children or adults. Social competence at this age seems to involve different types of nonverbal skills for boys and girls.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"124 1","pages":"39-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20418474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Relationship between acculturation and mental health for Asian Indian immigrants in the United States.","authors":"S Mehta","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

A community sample of Indian immigrants in the United States (N = 195) completed a survey to assess the relationship between acculturation and mental health. The relationship among several social and demographic variables, three aspects of acculturation (perception of acceptance, cultural orientation, and language usage), and three aspects of mental health (psychological distress, acculturative stress, and satisfaction) were examined. Multiple regression analyses were used to identify statistical predictors of a composite index of mental health. Results indicated that acceptance and cultural orientation play crucial roles in mental health, independent of various social and demographic variables. Feeling accepted by the host society and being involved with Americans and U.S. culture were related to better mental health.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"124 1","pages":"61-78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20418475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Interpersonal relations and suicide ideation in China.","authors":"J Zhang, S Jin","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This study is an examination of the effects of interpersonal relations on suicide ideation in a national sample of 1,433 individuals from China. The effect of gender as well as Chinese-Western comparisons are also examined. Suicide ideation rates (defined as thinking about committing suicide) and rates for planned suicide were significantly lower than those in most U.S. samples; Chinese women consistently scored higher than men in both areas. LISREL path analyses indicated that interpersonal conflict had the greatest direct and total effect on suicide ideation, and social isolation was the weakest predictor among the three measures of interpersonal relations. A path model using the Chinese data calls into question Durkheim's social integration theory for predicting suicide. Findings are discussed in relation to Chinese culture.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"124 1","pages":"79-94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20418476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Establishing a link between cultural evolution and sexually transmitted diseases. 建立文化演变与性传播疾病之间的联系。

{"title":"Establishing a link between cultural evolution and sexually transmitted diseases.","authors":"R S Immerman, W C Mackey","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

It is argued that archaic sexually transmitted diseases influenced cultural traditions by reducing multiple sexual partners within communities. In this article, the adverse consequences of current sexually transmitted diseases are surveyed: Such infections decrease fertility of women and increase infant mortality; those adverse consequences are especially potent when antibiotics are not readily available. Cultural (cross-generational transmission of learned) responses to the threat of widespread infertility and elevated infant mortality rates are hypothesized to include the implementation of expectations for restricted numbers of sexual partners. These expectations, formal or informal, have been instituted within the context of biological predispositions, the \"certainty of paternity\" model, already-established traditions, and the need for a social father to be aligned with the mother-child dyad. A case study of the contemporary United States is offered as a heuristic example of how and why cultural choices may be developed and sustained.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"123 4","pages":"441-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20358916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impact of mood on information use in judgments of relationship satisfaction. 情绪对关系满意度判断中信息使用的影响。

{"title":"The impact of mood on information use in judgments of relationship satisfaction.","authors":"M Conway, M Hassebrauck","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The hypothesis in Study 1 was that positive mood leads people to rely on both central and peripheral features of relationship quality when making global satisfaction judgments concerning their relationship with a spouse or partner, whereas sadness leads people to focus more exclusively on central features. For German university students, correlational analyses, within mood condition, of feature ratings with satisfaction judgments, both obtained following mood induction, revealed results consistent with the hypothesis. Study 2 again addressed the differential breadth of feature processing, by having a different group of German students categorize features of relationship quality after mood induction. As expected, participants in the positive mood condition used the fewest categories, whereas those in the neutral and sad mood conditions used the most categories.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"123 4","pages":"393-410"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20360355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Self-esteem and causal attributions.","authors":"T A Chandler, M S Lee, J W Pengilly","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The relationship between self-esteem and causal attributions of success and failure in achievement-related behavior was examined among undergraduate students. An integration of a self-consistency model of causal attribution and self-enhancement theory was attempted. Self-esteem and performance outcome conditions of success and failure served as independent variables. Success and failure conditions were created via feedback regarding the participants' performance on an anagram task. The participants' attributions of six causal elements (ability, effort, immediate effort, task difficulty, luck, and mood) were categorized and combined with three causal dimensions (internal-external locus, stability, and controllability), which served as dependent variables. Participants' expectations regarding performance also served as a dependent variable. The relationship between self-esteem, expectancies of success and failure, performance, and stable causality were reported. In terms of causal dimensions, internal, stable, and controllable dimensions were explained by self-enhancement.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"123 4","pages":"479-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20358918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Emotional correlates of preferences for situation-activity combinations in everyday life.","authors":"A Mehrabian, C Wihardja, E Ljunggren","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Emotional correlates of preferences for everyday situation-activity combinations were explored using the PAD (Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance) Emotion Model. Preferences were assessed using a comprehensive sample of emotionally balanced situations, given in its entirety in the Appendix, because of its potential utility to investigators. Results for all situations and also for only the subgroup of pleasant situations showed that pleasure and dominance were positive correlates of preference. Specifically, for pleasant situations, preferences did not differ for exciting versus relaxing situations; also, exciting and relaxing situations were preferred more than amazing or protecting ones. Results for only the subgroup of unpleasant situations showed negative arousal/preference and positive dominance/preference relations. Specifically, situations that elicited disdain were preferred to those that produced anger and those that elicited boredom; boring and anger-eliciting settings were preferred to those that engendered distress.
","PeriodicalId":77145,"journal":{"name":"Genetic, social, and general psychology monographs","volume":"123 4","pages":"461-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20358917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
