The hormone evokes hypocalcemia (on day 1 and day 3) which is followed by a significant hypercalcemia on day 10. Thereafter, the level of calcium decreases again on day 15. Calcitonin induces hypophosphatemia (on day 3 and day 5). Thereafter, hyperphosphatemia is recorded on day 10. By day 15 normal serum phosphate value is achieved. After treatment with calcitonin, the ultimobranchial body becomes inactive and the parathyroid glands get activated.
","PeriodicalId":77037,"journal":{"name":"Biological structures and morphogenesis","volume":"2 4","pages":"136-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13631500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Differentiation of pure chick embryo epidermis grown in primary serum-free culture.","authors":"J M Verna, A Fichard, R Saxod","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The differentiation of precocious embryonic epidermis in serum-free primary culture was analyzed by light and electron microscopic methods. Explants of 7-day chick embryo epidermis were grown on collagen or poly-L-lysine substrates in the absence of dermal mesenchyme. The serum substitute consisted of a mixture of insulin, transferrin, putrescine and seleneous acid together with (or without) Nerve Growth Factor. These culture conditions were shown to support proliferation, growth and development (evaluated using morphological criteria) of the epidermal explants up to 4-5 days; during this period, the epidermis underwent stratification; well-developed desmosomes as well as tonofilaments were formed and the epidermis achieved a morphology close to that of 10-11 day epidermis in ovo. However long-term survival of the explants was not obtained as cellular death, starting on day 5, progressively led to the necrosis of most parts of the explant. This morphological study demonstrates that the early phases of epidermal growth and maturation can occur to some extent in the virtual absence of dermal elements and serum factors. Chick embryo epidermal cells may thus possess the intrinsic ability to go through, at least for short periods in vitro, their differentiation programme. Then, at the onset of epidermal keratinization (12 days in ovo), they require specific exogenous factors to fully differentiate in vitro.
","PeriodicalId":77037,"journal":{"name":"Biological structures and morphogenesis","volume":"2 2","pages":"60-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13734696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The venom seemed to exert a direct toxic effect on the constituent parts of the placenta. Glycogen appeared to advantage in the cells of the trophospongeal part of the placenta. Giant cells and basophilic cells were encountered around such glycogen cells. However, some giant cells showed vacuolation of the cytoplasm and pyknosis of the nuclei. The labyrinthine part of the placenta showed large and multiple small thrombi and congestion of the blood spaces. Again glycogen appeared to advantage in the syncytial cells. Non cellular exudate was also met with in such cases. The possible mechanisms of these changes were discussed.
","PeriodicalId":77037,"journal":{"name":"Biological structures and morphogenesis","volume":"2 1","pages":"13-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13883278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Acetylcholinesterase-positive intrapineal neuronal system in the palm squirrel Funambulus pennanti (Wroughton).","authors":"K S Bhaskar, K P Joy","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

A well-developed acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-positive neuronal system could be demonstrated in the pineal organ of the palm squirrel. There are two longitudinal nerve tracts which run all along the margin of the pineal organ from its distal to proximal regions. These nerve tracts are confluent distally. Another short, but deep tract was seen in the middle part of the pineal organ which joins one of these tracts. A large number of AChE-positive neurons whose processes actually form the tracts are present all along the pineal organ. They are distinguished into multipolar and pseudounipolar/unipolar neurons. A few neurons seen outside the nerve tract form a network of nerve fibres among the pinealocytes and also link the main tracts. The nerve tracts appear wavy, irregular and tortuous. A large number of round ring-like bodies seen in close association with neuronal perikarya and nerves may represent the axo-somatic and axo-dendritic contacts.
","PeriodicalId":77037,"journal":{"name":"Biological structures and morphogenesis","volume":"2 1","pages":"7-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13883281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wing, leg and breast muscles were processed for electron microscopy. It appears that the effects of the gene cn are expressed in the multinucleated cells as fine structural aberrations. Dilatation of the sarcotubular system, partial loss of the contractile elements and malorganization of the myofibrils are the major anomalies observed from day 7.5 to 18 of incubation. These changes do not constitute an abrupt phenomenon. Normal and diseased multinucleated cells always coexist in the same muscle specimen; however the frequency of the pathological cells augments with time. At the end of the incubation period, the poorly organized muscle tissue contains only morbid muscle cells. Phagocytosis or autolysis are absent.
","PeriodicalId":77037,"journal":{"name":"Biological structures and morphogenesis","volume":"1 1","pages":"15-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14527251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
