Data on medical scheme expenditure indicates a steady decline in their proportional pay-out for dental care during the period 1985 to 1994. In 1985 more than 12 per cent of total medical scheme expenditure was spent on dental care. In 1994 this had reduced to 8.37 per cent. In the present study, the historical trend (1985-1994) of medical scheme expenditure on dental care is analysed. By using the least squares method, the annual medical scheme expenditure on dental care is computed for the next eleven years (1995-2005). If the secular trend continues, less than 4 per cent of medical scheme expenditure will be paid for dental care by the year 2005.</p>","PeriodicalId":76669,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Dental Association of South Africa = Die Tydskrif van die Tandheelkundige Vereniging van Suid-Afrika","volume":"52 10","pages":"597-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20388359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mean shear bond strengths (MPa) of Groups 2 (14.2 +/- 4.9), 3(19.2 +/- 3.2) and 4 (23.1 +/- 3.7) were lower than the value obtained in Group 1 (25.1 +/- 3.7). The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the ability of four different dentine bonding systems to bond to dry (Group 1) and moist (Group 2) dentine. The four systems tested were Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP, 3M), Imperva Bond (IB, Shofu), All-Bond 2 (AB2, Bisco) and OptiBond (OB, Kerr). In Group 1 the products were applied to dentine surfaces which had been dried with compressed air, after the etchant was rinsed off. In Group 2, however, the dentine was wiped with a damp facial tissue to remove excess water from the surface after rinsing off the etchant. The bond strengths (MPa) for the different products to dry (D) and moist (M) dentine were as follows: SMP: D: 24.9 +/- 4.5; M: 18.9 +/- 4.4; IB: D: 19.2 +/- 3.6; M; 15.6 +/- 2.8; OB: D: 25.9 +/- 2.9; M: 24.5 +/- 4.5 and AB2: D: 16.3 +/- 2.6; M: 27.2 +/- 2.3. Data were statistically analysed using the Wilcoxon Sum of Rank as well as Kruskal-Wallis tests. SMP and IB showed statistically significant higher bond strengths to dry dentine than to moist dentine. OB demonstrated no significant difference in bond strength between dry and moist dentine. AB2, however, demonstrated significantly higher bond strengths to moist than to dry dentine.</p>","PeriodicalId":76669,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Dental Association of South Africa = Die Tydskrif van die Tandheelkundige Vereniging van Suid-Afrika","volume":"52 9","pages":"555-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20387650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency of tooth transposition in this study is 0.135 per cent consisting of 4 males (36.36 per cent) and 7 females (63.64 per cent), which is higher than those reported by some authors in Caucasian. The higher figure may be due to small sample size or due to greater penetrance of this anomaly in blacks. There were 17 transpositions of which 7 were of mandibular lateral incisors and canines (41.18 per cent) 5 maxillary lateral incisors and canines (29.4 per cent) 4 maxillary canines and premolars (23.5 per cent) and one mandibular canine and central incisors (5.88 per cent). The possible aetiologic factors and challenges to management are discussed in view of the dearth of qualified orthodontists for a population of about 88.5 million people.</p>","PeriodicalId":76669,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Dental Association of South Africa = Die Tydskrif van die Tandheelkundige Vereniging van Suid-Afrika","volume":"52 9","pages":"551-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20387649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Part II of this study compares the mean soft tissue cephalometric values for orthognathic surgery in black South African adults with the population groups studied by Legan and Burstone (1980) and Flynn et al (1989). Significant variations were found mainly in and around the mouth, the naso-labial angle and the angle of the throat of black South Africans when compared to caucasian North Americans (Legan and Burstone, 1980) and African-Americans (Flynn et al, 1989).
