{"title":"[Effects of long-term exposure to street traffic exhaust on the development of skin and respiratory tract diseases in children].","authors":"Hartmut Ising, Henning Lange-Asschenfeldt, Gert-Friedhelm Lieber, Hubertus Weinhold, Manfred Eilts","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The pathogenesis of allergies can be stimulated by adjuvant effects--i.e. air pollutants such as NOx and particles from diesel engines as well as noise--the latter especially during night-time. During sleep, noise signals which are associated with danger (i.e. lorry noise) have the potential to trigger stress reactions even if the noise level is low. Increases of cortisol in the first half of the night seem to play an important role.--In a blind interview study, the combined effects of chronic exposure to traffic related air pollution and noise, upon the risk of skin and respiratory diseases in children were studied. All children between 5-12 years, who had consulted one of two participating pediatricians were included in the study. The pediatricians' diagnoses of 400 children were analysed together with their parents answers on the density of road traffic on their street and several confounding factors. Multiple regression analyses resulted in relative risks of asthma, chronic bronchitis and neurodermitis, which increased significantly with increasing traffic load. {"title":"[Indoor air public health aspects].","authors":"B Seifert","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The special attention that needs to be paid to indoor air quality results from the fact that we spend most of the time of the day indoors. Indoor air is polluted by polluted outdoor air (which enters buildings due to ventilation processes) and the numerous sources in indoor spaces. For specific compounds, especially for organic chemicals, concentrations in indoor air exceed those in outdoor air. If indoor air is investigated a sound measurement strategy has to be applied to ascertain that results are obtained that permit a meaningful evaluation. In such evaluation it must not only be checked if there is compliance with guideline values (to the extent that they are available). In addition, the total situation in a room has to be considered. Even though progress has been made since the Concept for Better Indoor Air Quality of the German Federal Government has been published much remains to be done, especially with regard to building products. In some countries it is generally disinfected prior to discharge to protect downstream communities, which use the water for drinking and recreation. However, serious questions have been raised regarding the efficacy of conventional treatments to remove or destroy viruses, and regarding the generation of harmful byproducts by sewage chlorination. A safe and reliable solution is the use of ultrafiltration for the purification of wastewater, as the ultrafiltration membranes form an absolute barrier for bacteria and viruses including colloids and macromolecules. However, this application also demands the use of open channel module systems that can be cleaned with high efficiency with regard to scaling, fouling and especially biofouling. The flat membrane module systems using selected membranes and a special plant design can meet these and further requirements expected in this application, including easy handling, low energy consumption and optimised operation costs. It has been found that the volumetric organic loading (VOL) on ponds affects pathogen removal inversely whereas temperature has a positive effect. This was confirmed in the present studies on \"anoxic\" ponds, which were loaded in the range between conventional organic loading levels for anaerobic and facultative stabilisation ponds. In addition, other environmental factors (light, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) were also found to influence pathogen removal in the model ponds. The effects on faecal coliform removal of volumetric organic loading and temperature are represented in the form of a multiple regression model.
