Combination of bulky and rigid monomer units with controlled levels of branching is proposed as a method to increase free volume of the polymer matrix. Increases in free volume may allow for improved ion transport decoupled from the segmental motion of the polymer backbone, especially in these high glass transition temperature materials. Increased transport in glassy materials enables multifunctional applications that require ion transport and structural rigidity. The series of novel polymers was characterized for chemical structure, thermal transitions, and molecular weight. Recent efforts have been directed to the discovery of solution processable polymeric semiconductors for the ease of fabrication and low cost. In this paper, we report the investigation of various 3-substituted regioregular polythiophenes as active semiconductors for field-effect transistors. The best transistor performance has been found with regioregular poly(3-heaxylthiophene). Classical Merrifield solid-phase peptide synthesis, performed on low cross-linked hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) beads, sometimes suffers from sequence-dependent coupling difficulties. The concept of incorporating PEG into supports for solid-phase synthesis represents a successful approach to alleviating such problems. This chapter reviews the preparation of families of poly(ethylene glycol)-polystyrene (PEG-PS)graft as well as (highly) Cross-Linked Ethoxylate Acrylate Resin (CLEAR) supports developed in our laboratories, and demonstrates their applications to the syntheses of a wide range of targets in connection with numerous research objectives.
