Significant differences were observed between normal and depressed patients, especially in those with retardation. The 'retarded' depressives exhibited higher pain threshold values, a lower number of motor reactions, and more prolonged reaction times. 2 normal and 4 depressed patients were submitted to the same tests after 1 night's total sleep deprivation. In normals negative effects were found in the levels of vigilance and endurance. In depressed patients, at variance with normals, the number of motor reactions increased, the reaction time decreased, and the rate of basal motor innervation improved, tending to normalization. On the contrary, pain threshold underwent the same type of changes as in controls. Sleep deprivation seemed to specifically reduce retardation phenomena in depressives, thus strongly improving motor reactivity.</p>","PeriodicalId":76382,"journal":{"name":"Psychiatria clinica","volume":"14 3","pages":"150-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000283911","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18340860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The different patterns of depression identified in an earlier study could be correlated with the diagnostic subgroups of schizophrenia in which the patients were classified. Hebephrenic affect disturbance appeared as temporal discontinuity of depressive mood during the courses of treatment. Patients with a paranoid type of schizophrenia were the least depressed and had the fewest fluctuations of mood. Although patients with a schizoaffective type of schizophrenia exhibited characteristic changes between manic and depressive mood, their mood within a manic or depressive period was more stable than that of any other subgroup. It is known that individuals with HLA B27 have a markedly increased risk to fall ill from arthropathies (i.e. Bechterew's disease). Generally, it seems extremely rare that arthropathies and schizophrenia occur together in the same person. In 16 chronic paranoid schizophrenics with HLA B27 no form of arthropathy and in 288 arthropathic patients no case of schizophrenia could be detected (evidenced in a psychiatric case register). Furthermore in 131 arthropathic patients with HLA B27 no psychiatric disease (except one feeble-minded and one with alcohol problems) could be identified. On the other hand, in the group of arthropathic patients without HLA B27 the incidence of psychiatric diseases was 5 times higher than in the group with HLA B27 and so comparable to the morbidity of the normal population. It is conceivable that HLA B27 is a 'genetic marker' for arthropathy as well as for a defined subgroup of schizophrenia. These data agree with the hypothesis that schizophrenia and arthropathies are mutually exclusive in one individual.</p>","PeriodicalId":76382,"journal":{"name":"Psychiatria clinica","volume":"14 1","pages":"49-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18023005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when differentiated psychopathologically, the haptoglobin (Hp) type 2-2 as a risk factor of cyclothymic psychoses is found to be significantly overrepresented in the patient group with a cyclic axis syndrome. On the other hand, an excess of Hp 1-1 can be observed and statistically confirmed in comparison with the population level among the patients offering a schizophrenic axis syndrome or resting unclassified. Possibly, the Hp serum groups play a role in the bioregulation of emotionality. The 'noncyclic' group does not show the marker traits of process psychoses, but in this sampling there is, in contrast to the 'cyclics,' a higher concentration of the immunoglobulin G serum level on the statistical border line, which perhaps is caused by destructive factors. Lumbar punctures were performed immediately after admission following a standardized psychiatric examination and symptom rating in a drug-free state. Results were compared with a control group consisting of 32 neurological patients with only peripheral disorders, excluding spinal processes and abnormal routine CSF findings. All three substances were significantly increased in delirium tremens; 5HIAA showed the most marked and TRY the least pronounced increase. The statistical correction for age, height and body weight did not decrease but somewhat increased the differences. Duration of alcohol abuse did not account for the observed metabolic changes; severity of delirium tremens, however, correlated significantly with the 5HIAA and to a lesser degree with the HVA level. The further analysis revealed a differential relationship of the amine metabolite concentrations to some prominent symptoms: agitation was significantly dependent only on the HVA level while disorientation and hallucination seemed to be determined mostly by the serotonin metabolite 5HIAA in the CSF. TRY concentration proved to be unrelated to either global severity or any of these symptoms.</p>","PeriodicalId":76382,"journal":{"name":"Psychiatria clinica","volume":"14 3","pages":"167-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000283913","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17239245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
