{"title":"Characterization of coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated from free-living birds.","authors":"V Hájek, J Balusek, V Horák, D Koukalová","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

A total of 129 coagulase-positive staphylococcal strains were isolated from the nasopharyngeal region of free-living birds--81 (16%) from 501 birds of prey, 29 (25%) from 117 water birds, and 19 (2%) from 937 pheasants. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus intermedius were identified in 64 (79%) and 17 (21%) strains from birds of prey, in 1 (3%) and 28 (97%) strains from water birds, and in 4 (21%) and 15 (79%) strains from pheasants, respectively. Of the total number of the 69 S.aureus strains 45 (65%) could be biotyped. Biotype D prevailed in the strains from birds of prey. Among all the 60 S.intermedius strains 41 (68%) biotype 1 and 19 (32%) biotype 3 strains could be recognized. Biotype 1 predominated in strains from water birds and pheasants, while biotype 3 in strains from birds of prey. Resistance to antibiotics was recorded in 8 (12%) S.aureus and 5 (8%) S.intermedius strains only. Fifty-six (81%) of the 69 S.aureus strains could be typed with human phages, 30 (44%) with bovine and 41 (51%) with chicken phages. It is evident that the host range of Shimizu's (CH) phages involves not only S.aureus from chicken but also from any other birds. None of these strains was typable with canine phages. Out of the 60 S.intermedius strains 45 (75%) were lysed with Blouse and Meekins' canine phages. When human, bovine, and chicken phages were used, all the 60 strains were completely resistant.
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 4","pages":"407-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13001038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Geographical distribution of arboviruses in Yugoslavia.","authors":"J Vesenjak-Hirjan, V Punda-Polić, M Dobe","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Studies of arboviruses started in Yugoslavia in 1953 following the isolation of TBE virus which caused a severe epidemic that year. Until now the following viruses have been proven to circulate in the country: tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), Bhanja (BHA), sandfly fever (SF), Tahyna (TAH), Calovo (CVO), West Nile (WN), dengue (DEN), Jug Bogdanovac (JB), and Hantaviruses. TBE virus is endemic in the north-west part of the country, causing also epidemics in cyclical intervals. Its typical clinical picture is aseptic meningitis, but severe cases with paralysis have also been described. The bite of ticks is confirmed in about 80% of cases. CCF caused a small epidemic with ten clinical cases in Macedonia in 1976. Bhanja virus was isolated on the Dalmatian island of Brac in 1977, the antibody rate there, determined by the HI method, being about 31%. The first human disease in the world was caused by the Yugoslav Bhanja virus strain. Sandfly fever is still active in the country. The Naples type is prevailing and has proved hazardous for newcomers. Hantaviruses have been studied since 1980. They caused severe epidemics (1967, 1980, 1989) and sporadic cases all over the country. Three different strains are in circulation. Further studies are needed for the rest of the above mentioned viruses to learn more about their significance in human pathology.
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 2","pages":"129-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12823795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The steady epidemiological characteristics of yersiniosis were the prevalence of children and boys and a typical seasonal pattern with differences between the Czech and Slovak Republics. In the Czech Republic, there were several incidence peaks following, when summarized, the incidence curve of other alimentary infections, whereas in the Slovak Republic morbidity reached its peak during winter months. The numbers of isolated strains oscillated significantly between districts and by years. It appears that the number of positive findings in different districts is not only an objective value reflecting a mosaic-like pattern of incidence but also depends on the quality of microbiological diagnostics.
","PeriodicalId":76007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of hygiene, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology","volume":"35 2","pages":"167-88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13100218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Antibiotic sensitivity pattern; experience at University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.","authors":"M N Chowdhury","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Results of sensitivity testing were discussed based on examination of 5192 isolates of the various bacteria isolated from clinical specimens from King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae were sensitive to penicillin and erythromycin. The sensitivity pattern of Staphylococcus aureus was also predictable as they were fairly sensitive to both methicillin (98%) and erythromycin (96%). Neisseria gonorrhoeae (27%) showed a high level of resistance to penicillin. The resistance of Haemophilus influenzae to ampicillin and chloramphenicol was low. Brucella species was sensitive to tetracycline and rifampicin; resistance to streptomycin and cotrimoxazole was minimal being 1% and 6% respectively. The resistance of E. coli, Klebsiella species and Proteus species to second and third generation cephalosporins and amikacin was fairly low ranging from 1.3% to 3%. The gentamicin resistance for these organisms was also within the acceptable range (3%-10%). Gentamicin and amikacin resistance for Pseudomonas aeruginosa was low (2-8%). Salmonella typhi was sensitive to ampicillin, cotrimoxazole, and chloramphenicol. Salmonella enteritidis, Shigella species, and enteropathogenic E. coli were highly resistant to various antibiotics. Campylobacter jejuni was sensitive to gentamicin but 6% of isolates were resistant to erythromycin. Ninety six percent of Gram-negative rods except P. aeruginosa isolated from urine of patients having urinary tract infections were sensitive to amoxycillin-clavulanic acid.
