Class and type distribution of monoclonal immunoglobulins (characterized by means of immunofixation electrophoresis) mostly corresponded with the literature data. Nevertheless, higher incidence and lower mean age at detection were observed for IgG monoclonal components. This finding is probably related to the discovery of a large number of micro-monoclonal immunoglobulins with no association with B-lymphoproliferative disorders, mostly belonging to the IgG class and affecting younger people. The need is stressed for a widespread standardization of the techniques employed for detection and characterization of monoclonal immunoglobulins, in order to obtain more comparable results.</p>","PeriodicalId":75613,"journal":{"name":"Bollettino dell'Istituto sieroterapico milanese","volume":"68 3","pages":"224-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13636132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 592 sets of four blood culture bottles were collected from adults in a twenty-week period, giving 126 positive sets. The conventional system recovered 121 isolates, whereas the BACTEC NR 660 system recovered 97 microorganism. The difference in the recovery rate was not statistically significant. Contaminant isolates were detected with greater frequency in the conventional system (p less than 0.001). Microorganism were recovered faster in one or both BACTEC NR 660 bottles than in conventional system (p less than 0.001). Our study confirms that BACTEC NR 660 system is suitable for routine detection of bacteremia.</p>","PeriodicalId":75613,"journal":{"name":"Bollettino dell'Istituto sieroterapico milanese","volume":"68 3","pages":"228-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13636133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
