Electrophoretic and immunoblot analysis indicated that the fibrocartilage contained both type I and type II collagens. Immunohistochemically, type I collagen was detected in the fibrous matrix of the distal segment in all the stages examined. Type II collagen was detected first at 4 weeks in the extracellular matrix surrounding the mature chondrocytes distributed sparsely as single cells or small clusters among immature chondroblasts. The clusters reactive with anti-type II collagen serum increased in size and number at 6 weeks, and almost all the region of the distal segment became reactive with anti-type II collagen serum at 8 weeks.</p>","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"25 4","pages":"279-88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14460435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The volume of the calcified zone expressed as a percentage of the total cartilage was not only constant for one joint, but also in all the joints of a single individual. Nevertheless, the variation between subjects ranges from 6.9 to 8.6%. In two cases both sides of the body were investigated. As was the case in an earlier investigation on the femoral head, the bilateral distribution of the thickness was the same. Since the thickness of the total cartilage varies with the local distribution of loading in the joint, it follows that the thickness of the calcified layer also depends upon mechanical factors. Five subjects is too few to allow correlation with age or sex to be either refuted or confirmed. There is some evidence in the existing literature that the thickness of the calcified zone may be altered by disease.</p>","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"25 1","pages":"41-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14562613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional and, to study the role of the bacterial flora, germ-free rats received 500 mg neomycin daily by stomach tube. Rats were sacrificed after seven days and small intestine (proximal and distal part) together with segments of the colon were removed and prepared for histochemistry. The colon and proximal small intestine of untreated conventional and germ-free animals did not show appreciable differences in staining activity after treatment with neomycin. Neomycin diminished both in normal and germ-free rats the activity of NAD tetrazolium reductase, succinate dehydrogenase, esterase, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase in the distal small intestine. The findings of this study indicate that explanations for the beneficial effects of neomycin on hyperammonemia in liver disease should not only include the bactericidal action of neomycin but also its influence on absorption and metabolic functions of the mucosal cells.</p>","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"24 3","pages":"223-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14096774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
