{"title":"Retroperitoneal paraganglia and the peripheral autonomic nervous system in the human fetus.","authors":"B Baljet, A B Boekelaar, G J Groen","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

By means of the AChE in toto staining method retroperitoneal paraganglia and the peripheral autonomic nervous system in human fetuses have been investigated. Many small retroperitoneal paraganglia are present near the sympathetic trunks close to the sympathetic trunk ganglia. In the thoracic region small paraganglia are present in the intercostal spaces. Small splanchnic nerves entering small paraganglia have been described. In the lower sacral region no paraganglia are present. The major splanchnic nerve arises at various levels from the sympathetic trunks as well as many smaller thoracic splanchnic nerves. Intermediate ganglia are present in the major splanchnic nerve, the smaller splanchnic nerves and the communicating rami. In the sympathetic trunks many ganglia are fused. In the human fetus there exists a large variability in number and diameter of the communicating rami. Interconnecting bundles of nerve fibers between the left and right sympathetic trunks are present at all levels, but most numerous at the sacral level.
","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"23 2","pages":"137-49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14952160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The development of the peripheral autonomic nervous system in relation to the gastro-intestinal tract.","authors":"A B Boekelaar, J Drukker, G J Groen, B Baljet","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

In this study the development of vagus nerves and the development of sympathetic nerves related to the development of the upper gastro-intestinal tract was studied in the rat from 12.5 days p.c. until birth by means of enzyme histochemical methods applied to sections and toto preparations. A striking time relation between the ingrowth of the vagus nerves as well as the sympathetic nerves and the appearance of acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-positive cells in the wall of the upper gastro-intestinal tract is established. The maturation of the upper enteric ganglion cells is dependent on the presence of a vagal influence. The vagal ingrowth of the stomach starts at about day 12.5 p.c. In AChE toto preparations it is established that the basic distribution pattern as described in the adult rat is complete at day 15 p.c. However, in contrast with the adult state, gastric branches can be traced up to the pylorus and the greater curvature until day 18 p.c. During the 18th day p.c. there is a tremendous increase in the surface area of the stomach. This increase in surface area of the gastric wall and relative decrease in vagal outgrowth leads to the adult configuration of vagal ramifications in relation to the wall of the stomach which can already be observed on the 19th day p.c.
","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"23 2","pages":"157-79"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14952162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the head region, mesectoderm formation starts in a pre-neural plate stage. It continues to the 20-somite stage. This implies that the contribution of the neural crest to the head mesoderm must be considerable. In the trunk, the neural crest only produces cells after adhesion of the neural walls. Mesectoderm formation continues for a long time, slowly retreating in a caudal direction. At the 40-somite stage, mesectoderm formation still occurs in the most caudal part of the trunk. Compared to the head, the contribution of the neural crest in the trunk seems to be less important than that of the primitive streak.
","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"23 2","pages":"99-114"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14952166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Embryos were sacrificed at 4 days. In the basal part of the neural tube an additional floor plate was induced in the vicinity of the implant. This floor plate was characterized by a low proliferative activity, a thin wall, spindle-like nuclei crowded peripherally and some neuroblast-like cells. It was either blending with the natural floor plate or separated from it, depending on the exact position of the implant. In the latter case neuroblasts were observed in between both floor plates. The additional floor plate was present only when the implanted notochord was less than 25 micron apart from the neural tube; at larger distance an increase of the ventral horn neuroblast area could be seen. It is concluded that the implanted notochord is able to induce a floor plate at 1.5 days of incubation. The specific influence of the notochord on the morphogenesis of the neural tube, its inductive period as well as the presence of the neuroblast-like cells in the additional floor plate are discussed.
","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"23 2","pages":"91-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14952165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"A mesoscopic technique for the study of the development of the peripheral system in rat foetuses.","authors":"J Bloot, A B Boekelaar, G J Groen, B Baljet","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"
Unlabelled: In order to study the morphogenesis of the nervous system in the rat an acetylcholinesterase in toto method for staining nervous tissue in rat foetuses was developed.

Procedure: Rat foetuses of 14-22 days are fixed \"en bloc\" for 24 hours in a cold sucrose-formol solution. Fixed specimens are rinsed for 2 days in cold 0.22 M sucrose in a sodiumcacodylate buffer (pH 7.2). The specimens are cut (mid-)sagittally with the aid of a razor-blade, and incubated in a medium of acetylthiocholine iodide in acetate buffer (pH 5.0). Then, dehydration in glycerine/water mixtures of increasing glycerine content follows. The specimens may be stored in pure glycerine or embedded in epoxy-resin blocks and can be studied under a binocular dissecting microscope. In using this in toto staining method both the continuity of the central and peripheral parts of the nervous system as well as details up to the level of individual perikarya and motor endplates are preserved. With this mesoscopic method the three-dimensional architecture of the peripheral nervous system and its topological relations to other structures can be studies in one specimen. The exact procedure and the results as well as a method for embedding specimens in epoxy-resin blocks for teaching purposes are described. The advantages of this mesoscopic staining method for foetuses are discussed.
","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"23 1","pages":"35-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15007343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Postnatal somatometry of the rat facial skeleton.","authors":"A W Park, B J Nowosielski-Slepowron","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Growth of the rat facial skeleton over a 40 day period from birth was examined relative to 8 length and 4 width parameters of animals subject to somatic growth retardation experimentally induced by overtaxing the maternal lactational capacity by means of excessively large cross-fostered litters. Least squares regression lines were calculated for the preweaning period (day 1-20); the postweaning period (day 21-40) and the total period (day 1-40), thereafter being recalculated into segmented regression lines relative to the physiological growth phases. Specific phases of growth activity were noted throughout the 40 days with those in the preweaning period showing a marked consistency concomitant with the maternal lactational ability and subsequent emergence of biological weaning. A consistent phasic growth spectrum with definitive breaks in continuity supports the original postulate (Brody, 1927) that growth curves consist of phases of exponential activity delineated by changes in growth rate. Due to the inclusion of both control and experimental samples, the breakage points of the phases marking the change of growth rate different and were therefore reciprocated by alterations of phasic duration. Phasic growth occurred in the postweaning period with some degree of variance which did not permit an assessment of the causation factors with sufficient validity. The postweaning period of the experimental sample exhibited varying degrees of growth recovery (catch-up) in the majority of the facial parameters. Covariance analysis of the parameters in most instances showed that the parameters, as defined, and the bone units incorporated within them manifested a characteristic growth response in each sample irrespective of the modifying influence of the environmental factors.
","PeriodicalId":75392,"journal":{"name":"Acta morphologica Neerlando-Scandinavica","volume":"23 1","pages":"1-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15118411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
