The daily profile after a dose of bSTH injected subcutaneously showed an increase in serum immunoreactive insulin (IRI) with serum glucose levels within the normal range. Free fatty acids were also elevated. After a second bSTH administration, the response to an intravenous glucose load caused marked elevation of serum IRI while serum glucose remained similar to control values. The results are compatible with a response resembling that of adult dogs submitted to similar bSTH administration of short duration. The hyperinsulinemia thus induced may be a key factor in maintenance of normoglycemia.
","PeriodicalId":75378,"journal":{"name":"Acta cientifica venezolana","volume":"51 1","pages":"27-31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21810241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its main objective consists of the estimation of a lineal correlation coefficient between two of the most important variables that have been studied in the Proyecto Venezuela of Fundacredesa; Height, and Graffar Socioeconomical Score of Mendez Castellano. The reached value (r = -0.28) which is based on choice considerations, restrictions, and the adjustment to a pertinent universe, constitute the maximum value that could have been achieved as of the sample gathered in the Proyecto Venezuela. To be able to calculate such value, it was necessary to implement heuristic procedures, designing and producing a complex model of statistical processing. This model allows the estimation of the correlation coefficient as if this coefficient was already obtained from individual and raw data level, but, in this case starting from the Proyecto Venezuela's published information, that only shows aggregate average values. While processing the data--additionally to the principal conclusion of the work that was obtaining the maximum value of the correlation coefficient--it was found that the average of the height variable, at each age group, remained basically unaltered in the I and II Social and Economical Strata, independently of the values that are reached in the Graffar Score.
","PeriodicalId":75378,"journal":{"name":"Acta cientifica venezolana","volume":"50 3","pages":"151-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21725205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A system of fermentation was developed where it was possible to separate the physiologic states of growth from those of production of L-lysine. The biomass propagation step carried out in batch cultures with yeast extract and glucose substrate showed cellular growth without production of L-lysine. The production of L-lysine was achieved when the cells were collected and incubated in the mineral glucose medium without yeast extract. In this condition non cellular growth was observed and the yield product (YP/S) and the specific production of L-lysine were increased (3 times) in rapport with the values obtained with the conventional fermentation system with overlapping of cellular growth and production of L-lysine. The oxygen limitation led to the synthesis of lactic acid and acetic acid as alternative byproducts, which diminished when improving the oxygenation conditions by increasing the agitation rate of the cultures.
","PeriodicalId":75378,"journal":{"name":"Acta cientifica venezolana","volume":"50 4","pages":"233-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21810149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[Obesity, insulin resistance and skeletal muscle characteristics].","authors":"S H Torres","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Insulin resistance seems to be a metabolic aberration associated with obesity. Impaired insulin action is also central to a cluster of diseases including non-insulin dependent diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemias and atherosclerosis. Body fat distribution, especially upper body segment obesity is related to insulin-resistance. Glucose uptake is insulin dependent in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. From a quantitative standpoint, skeletal muscle has the greater impact on whole body glucose economy, therefore the cause of altered insulin sensitivity has been looked for in this tissue. The skeletal muscle is composed of different types of fibers with specific metabolic and circulatory characteristics; type IIB fibers are less insulin-sensitive and their proportion has been related to obesity and insulin resistance. The different factors that may impair insulin action and alter glucose uptake in skeletal muscle are: lower blood flow to muscle, produced by either decreased vasodilation or by increased sympathetic nerve activity; augmented diffusion distance from capillaries to muscle due to a decrease in capillary number or to enlarged muscle cells; decrease of insulin receptors; change in the fatty acid profile of major membrane structural phospholipids; decrease in glucose transporters (GLUT 4) and/or hexokinase; impairment in metabolic routes of glucose in muscle as reduction in glycogen synthase. Also, the high rate of lipolysis present in obesity and in insulin resistance could lead to an impaired glucose oxidation in muscle.
","PeriodicalId":75378,"journal":{"name":"Acta cientifica venezolana","volume":"50 1","pages":"34-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21374571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two hundred and ninety-six six-to-twelve year olds were randomly selected from two schools, one private, the other public, located in the Municipality of Maracaibo, State of Zulia, Venezuela. The children assigned to each school were randomly distributed among the experimental and control groups. A general hypothesis was set up, stating that reinforcement and motivation generate changes in the gingival health of the children under study, but with different results for each, depending on their psycho-social characteristics. Two approaches were used: instruction/supervision and instruction/supervision/reinforcement/stimulation. These two approaches were then measured against a \"psycho-social profile\" which is based on material conditions and the developmental stages of the children. Instructions were given to the experimental group on how to brush their teeth. They were supervised, reinforced and stimulated for a period of six months, with a post-test assessment. The control group was only given instructions on how to brush their teeth and supervised. A scale based on Massler's classification was used to determine the developmental stages. Standardized indices were used to evaluate the dependent variable: Plaque Index and Gingival Index. The results showed that: the material living conditions and developmental stage of the child are elements that influence the assimilation of pre-established behavior, the basis of preventive programs.
","PeriodicalId":75378,"journal":{"name":"Acta cientifica venezolana","volume":"50 1","pages":"42-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21374572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AMI (10(-3) M) has a negative chronotropic and positive inotropic effects, not dependent on the autonomic system. DCB-AMI has a bimodal effect on the contractile force: increases it at low concentrations but causes a decrease at concentrations higher than 10(-6) M. The effect of AMI on the sinus frequency is unchanged by BM-DIGO. AMI (10(-3) M) decreases the inotropic effect of BM-DIGO and increases the toxic concentration of this drug on isolated tissues. The dose-response curve to epinephrine was not changed by AMI. Similar results were obtained using DCB-AMI (2 x 10(-7) M). The positive inotropic effect obtained by low extracellular potassium (1 mM) was not altered by AMI. The activity of the Mg(++)-dependent, Na+/K+ ATPase measured in the microsomal fraction obtained from guinea pig heart was diminished (10%) by AMI (10(-3) M). The drug did not affect the inhibition of the enzyme induced by ouabain. In conclusion, our experiments show multiple effects of AMI and DCB-AMI on the guinea pig heart. The inhibition of the Na+/Ca++ exchange explains them only partially. A slow channel blocking effect appears fundamental to interpret our results.
","PeriodicalId":75378,"journal":{"name":"Acta cientifica venezolana","volume":"50 1","pages":"48-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21374574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, waters contaminated with reformulated gasoline were also treated and the degradation of MTBE and volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) was followed. The system efficiency, in the contaminated water treatment of two different samples were also tested. One of the samples came from oil production operations and the other from a petrochemical plants complex. {"title":"[Effects of 17 alpha-hydroxy-progesterone on cortico-caudate transmission in rats].","authors":"A Torres, J A González Vegas","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Estrogen and progesterone have known effects on the endocrine control of sexual functions, however there is renewed interest on their potential action on extrahypothalamic sites. Previous results obtained in this laboratory, showed that estradiol has an inhibitory effect on cortico-caudate transmission. In this study the action of 17 alpha-Hydroxy-Progesterone on cortico-caudate transmission was assessed. Intact, ovariectomized female rats and intact male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized with chloral hydrate (40 mg/100 g i.p.) and 17 alpha-Hydroxy-Progesterone (10 microliters of a 2.5 mg/ml solution) was administered via a right jugular catheter. Conventional electrophysiological recordings were made in the caudate nucleus by means of glass electrodes, and the motor cortex was electrically stimulated by means of metal electrodes, insulated except at the tip. Excitatory responses were analyzed by a computer, adding successive sweeps to build Post-stimulus time histograms. Injection of 17 alpha-Hydroxy-Progesterone produced an increase in the magnitude of the response in the majority of neurons tested (95%). In some cells this increase was followed by a decrease (35%), and in one case the excitatory response was decreased. These changes started 5 to 10 minutes after the injection, and lasted for about one hour, when the excitatory response returned to control values. These results show that progesterone can modulate cortico-caudate transmission in the rat, and suggest that due to the short latency of this effect, this could be exerted through a non-genomic mechanism of action.
","PeriodicalId":75378,"journal":{"name":"Acta cientifica venezolana","volume":"50 4","pages":"227-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21810148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
