After severe COVID-19 illness, most of the patients experience a variety of long-lasting health impairments that require rehabilitative services. The rehabilitative services are highly significant for those with underlying health conditions, older adults, and those who have been deconditioned due to social isolation and lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. This evidence summary indicates that the occupational therapy workforce dealing with COVID-19 survivors must be ready to manage the full range of consequences, such as breathlessness, fatigue, muscle weakness, delirium, posttraumatic stress disorder, and cognitive deficits. Further, recent research studies indicated that COVID-19 survivors would need an individualized program which may include strength and endurance training, energy conservation techniques, self-management of symptoms, self-care, vocational, and community-based rehabilitation. This evidence-based summary discusses how occupational therapists can provide evidence-based interventions for COVID-19 survivors.","PeriodicalId":75019,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of occupational therapy","volume":"7 1","pages":"156 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81480677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A threat stimulus, such as site of a predator, triggers a fear response in the amygdala, which activates areas involved in preparation for motor function in fight or flight. Considering the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), fighting against this specific infectious disease was a serious challenge to the residents who were at a risk of themselves contacting the disease. This leads to exhaustion, isolation, and persistent emotional trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Objectives: The objective of the study was to assess the level of perceived fear of residents doctors as front-liners and to find coping strategies used by resident doctors as front-liners to overcome fear. Study Design: An online survey was conducted. Methods: An online questionnaire-based survey was conducted to understand fear level in resident doctors as front-liners and various strategies used by them to overcome fear. The survey questionnaire consisted 21 items. This questionnaire was validated by three faculties. The final questionnaire consisted of 20 questions pertaining to the level of fear. Out of 150 e-mails sent to resident doctors in March 2020, received responses were from 86 resident doctors. Google Form link with the same questionnaire was resent to these 86 resident doctors, in November 2020. Out of these 86 e-mails, responses from 50 resident doctors of only COVID tertiary hospital were quantitatively analyzed. Results: The initial total minimum score was 134 and the maximum score was 200, and the average score was 156.16. Out of 50 residents, 28 (56%) were in the range less than or equal to average and 22 (44%) residents were in range greater than average. The total minimum score after 8 months was 69 and the maximum score was 179, and the average score was 128. Out of 50 residents, 20 (40%) were in the range less than or equal to average and 30 (60%) residents were in range greater than average. Out of 50 residents, 44 (88%) residents had severe fear and 6 (12%) had moderate fear at the initial stage of pandemic, whereas after 8 months of pandemic, only 11 (22%) residents had severe fear and 37 (74%) residents had moderate fear with 2 (4%) residents having only mild fear. Conclusion: Resident doctors who worked for more than 6 h per day in the COVID wards experienced moderate-to-severe levels of fear, which decreased with continued exposure to similar situation. The coping strategies used by residents also helped them to overcome this fear.","PeriodicalId":75019,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of occupational therapy","volume":"134 1","pages":"151 - 155"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80299538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People of all age groups, from children to older adults have had to compromise overall life-style by adapting to the changes necessary for preventive and safety measures. Children are also overwhelmed due to changes in routine, occupation, leisure activities, and social participation. These have added to the psychosocial stressors of parents and caregivers and have influenced their quality of life (QOL) and occupational balance (OB). Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate QOL and OB among Indian parents of children below 16 years during COVID-19 lockdown. The secondary objective was to examine the relationship between QOL and OB as well as explored the level of QOL and OB among parents during COVID-19 lockdown. Study Design: An online based cross-sectional survey was conducted through different social media platforms. Methods: Parents (N = 277: n = 116 male and n = 161 female) of children below 16 years of age from different parts of India who were able to understand English language, filled an online questionnaire that assessed their QOL by World Health Organization QOL Short form (WHOQOL-Bref) and OB by OB Questionnaire (OBQ). Parents were recruited by a snow ball sampling method. Results: Results showed that the majority of the parents were having good self-rated WHOQOL-Bref and OBQ scores. Various socio-demographic variables including family structure, educational status, employment status and number of children did not influence OB and QOL of the parents. However, Independent sample “t” test showed a significant association (P = 0.014 and 95% confidence interval [95% CI]:-7.845, 0.902) between age of the parents and OBQ scores. In Karl Pearson correlation analysis, it was also found that the association between scores of OBQ and WHOQOL-Bref was positive with a highly significant (P = 0.001 and [95% CI]: 0.243, 0.465). Conclusion: The result of the study showed most of the parents of children below 16 years old were having good QOL and OB during COVID-19 lockdown.","PeriodicalId":75019,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of occupational therapy","volume":"5 1","pages":"138 - 143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75679659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many scales are more focused on assessing the patients' independence or dependence but are less understood on the different parameters such as importance and values of activity, satisfaction, ability to cope up, completion, and time taken for the activity. These parameters are not well defined in many ADL assessments. Objectives: The purpose of this index was to evaluate ADL not only based on independence but also to understand the patients' values, adequacy, safety, standard, and finally, acceptability. Study Design: A prospective quantitative study was conducted. Methods: We conducted prospective, quantitative study and developed a new scale. Items were generated from a review of literature, semi-structured interviews of adult as well as geriatric patients and discussions with experts were carried out. The new instrument was piloted among 290 patients with neurological and orthopedic conditions. Content validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were evaluated. Results: The new scale has good internal consistency: Cronbach's alpha = 0.984 and KR20 value = 0.97. Test–retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.87) was found to be good. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has created an unprecedented work from home (WFH) situation. This recent trend has led to computer users in WFH having limited access to health-care options, ergonomic workstations and social participation like a visit to a gym or walking in the park, or any other meaningful engagements which people adopt to improve their health and well-being. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the health and lifestyle behaviors and work-related discomfort reported by employees in WFH situations due to COVID-19 lockdown through a self-reported survey and to study if there is an association between reported discomfort and lifestyle behaviors. Study Design: This was a cross-sectional survey. Methods: A web-based, E-mail, cross-sectional survey was designed having three sections: demographic characteristics; work-related discomfort and its rating on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS); and scoring on the Simple Lifestyle Indicator Questionnaire (SLIQ). Completed questionnaires and the responses from employees in WFH were analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: Demographic data showed that the majority of the respondents were male (n = 190 [78%]). One hundred and ninety-five (80%) respondents reported symptoms of musculoskeletal discomfort. The SLIQ score showed 1 (1%) of the studied population in the healthy category, 70 (29%) in the intermediate healthy category, and 173 (70%) in the unhealthy category. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was calculated for the individual scores in each category with the VAS score. Exercise and VAS score showed a significant negative correlation (ρ = −0.146; P = 0.001; 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.261 [LL], −0.005 [UL]) while the VAS score with smoking (ρ = 0.362; P = 0.000; 95% CI: 0.227 LL, 0.466 UL) and stress level (ρ = −0.140; P = 0.029; 95% CI: −0.286 LL, −0.003 UL) showed a significant positive correlation. Conclusion: WFH has led to an overall reduction of participation in healthy lifestyle behaviors, with a substantial percentage of people classified in the unhealthy category. Survey also elicits a significant association where higher levels of exercise in people correlated with a lower reported work-related musculoskeletal discomfort. Similarly, smoking and higher stress levels correlated positively with reported musculoskeletal discomfort symptoms. Thus, awareness measures to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors and stress management should be incorporated among computer users working from home settings.","PeriodicalId":75019,"journal":{"name":"The Indian journal of occupational therapy","volume":"69 1","pages":"99 - 103"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76641318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
