Being researched for more than the last 25 years, VR has been a valuable tool in the industry almost as long. This talk will take the journey from some of the early VR pioneers to industrial VR applications of today and tomorrow, and look into the past and the future of enabling technologies for VR - including a close look to some of the really early VR hardware.","PeriodicalId":74561,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This year the name of the conference changed since the highly successful 12-year IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces is brought back into the main VR conference. It is a tremendous honor to host the conference in Reutlingen on its first return to Germany since 2005. Reutlingen is situated nicely with respect to our research institutes, the city has the charm of a southern German town, and the recently built (2013) Stadthalle and concert venue has a professional team that is experienced in conferences highlighting innovation in technology. This venue has enabled us to create a large program both in scientific content and in terms of demonstration and exhibit space.","PeriodicalId":74561,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Kuchenbecker","doi":"10.1109/VR.2018.8446054","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/VR.2018.8446054","url":null,"abstract":"Touching an object causes rich haptic cues that enable you to understand the object's physical properties and adeptly control the interaction. Although human experience centers on physical contact with tangible items, few computer systems provide the user with high-fidelity touch feedback, limiting their intuitiveness. Haptic interfaces are mechatronic systems that modulate the physical interaction between a human and his or her tangible surroundings. Such interfaces typically involve mechanical, electrical, and computational layers that work together to sense user motions or forces, quickly process these inputs with other information, and physically respond by actuating elements of the user's surroundings. By way of three examples, this talk will demonstrate that well-designed tactile feedback can greatly increase the realism of virtual worlds. First, we created a simple visuo-audio-tactile simulator to help dental students learn to find cavities in teeth. The user watches a video of a real dental tool interacting with a tooth while simultaneously feeling an authentic rendering of the associated contact vibrations. Second, we created the world's most realistic haptic virtual surfaces by recording and modeling what a user feels when touching 100 real objects with an instrumented stylus. The perceptual effects of displaying the resulting data-driven friction forces, tapping transients, and texture vibrations were quantified by having users compare the original surfaces to their virtual versions. Third, we extended the haptic texture concept to capture how a real robot vibrates as it moves its joints and tied this model to measured user motions. The resulting vibrotactile experiences were formally evaluated and then added to an immersive game that lets the user feel what it would be like to turn into a robot. While much work remains to be done, we are starting to see the tantalizing potential of systems that leverage tactile cues to allow a user to interact with virtual environments as though they were real.","PeriodicalId":74561,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Furness III of the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, for his lifetime contributions in pioneering the development of virtual reality and augmented reality technology and applications. Through his various roles as an Air Force Officer, Civil Service Scientist, Professor and Entrepreneur Tom developed the first operationally viable virtual interface technologies for the US military, founded a family of Human Interface Technology Laboratories in Seattle, New Zealand and Australia, contributed to 100 inventions and spun off 27 companies related to VR technology and applications with an aggregate market capitalization of > $7B. He has testified before the U.S. Senate regarding the future of virtual reality and its impact on the national information infrastructure. Among his contributions Tom developed the Visually-Coupled Airborne Systems Simulator, the Super Cockpit (a virtual cockpit the pilot wears), invented the Virtual Vision Sport (the first consumer personal virtual display), and the laser-projected Virtual Retinal Display. He orchestrated the first transpacific collaborative virtual reality (Greenspace) and spearheaded the first uses of VR in pain management, education, surgical simulation. He is the founder of the non-profit Virtual World Society for extending virtual reality as a learning system for families. Today, we introduce our research that successfully employed VR to the biodiversity conservation sciences. Jaguars are one of the endangered animals. It is certainly critical and compelling to preserve ecosystem for endangered animals. With the awareness of this, we endeavoured to establish a multidisciplinary VR project that implemented data from indigenous villagers (jaguar experts group A), the conventional knowledge of the field of jaguar ecosystem (from jaguar experts group B), and mathematical and statistical models. Our fascination lies in these questions: can we effectively bring together VR and analytical capabilities? Can VR be used to make this world a better place for living beings? Please enjoy our 360-degree images of jaguar habitats taken in the Peruvian Amazon.","PeriodicalId":74561,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The investment in these technologies by leading IT companies, as well as the buy-in and general excitement from outside investors, technologists, and content producers has never been more palpable. There are good reasons to be excited about the field. The real question will be if the technologies can add sufficient value to people's lives to establish themselves as more than just niche products. My path in this presentation will lead from a personal estimation of what matters for adoption of new technologies to important innovations we have witnessed on the road to anywhere/anytime use of immersive technologies. In recent years, one track of research in my lab has been concerned with the simulation of possible future capabilities in AR. With the goal to conduct controlled user studies evaluating technologies that are just not possible yet (such as a truly wide-field-of-view augmented reality display), we turn to high-end VR to simulate, predict, and assess these possible futures. In the far future, when technological hurdles, such as real-time reconstruction of photorealistic environment models, are removed, VR and AR naturally converge. Until then, we have a very interesting playing field full of technological constraints to have fun with.","PeriodicalId":74561,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
