This paper focuses on the handling of incoming containers transported on trucks in an \"all-straddle-carrier\" system. All major processes are reproduced by the simulation model. Input data includes parameters of space, speed and arrival frequency in a generic format, so that the model is adjustable to any situation. Analyzing the model for periods of model time ranging from a day to a week can give insight to the service level provided by any given port configuration. The simulated system can be used as a planning and a process improvement tool. In the development of the simulation model an object-oriented environment is used. It proves quite effective, resulting in a reliable and adjustable model.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Winter Simulation Conference. The Restaurant Modeling Studio (RMS) provides an analysis platform for investigating the impacts of these factors on critical performance metrics, especially speed of service and service capacity. The key components of the RMS are a simulation engine built in Arena, and two custom applications built on Microsoft Visio - the Kitchen and Process Designers. The simulation engine supports a large number of behaviors, including parallel operations, inventory replenishment, prioritized task selection and many more. The Kitchen Designer and Process Designer provide the user with powerful tools for specifying the physical layout and order fulfillment processes. This paper presents the components of the RMS and its use in an analysis kitchen design comparison and labor deployment standards.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Supply chain initiatives in manufacturing settings have led owners to expect that dramatic reductions in lead time are possible in all phases of their business, including the delivery of capital materials. Further, narrowing product delivery windows and increasing pressure to be first-to-market create significant external pressure to reduce lead time. In this paper, a case study is presented in which an owner entered the construction supply chain to procure and position key long-lead materials. The materials were held at a position in the supply chain selected to allow some flexibility for continued customization, but dramatic reduction in the time-to-site. Simulation was used as a tool to consider time-to-site tradeoffs for multiple inventory locations so as to better match the needs of the construction effort.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Many approaches have been developed to remove initialization bias from the output data. This paper provides a comparison of 5 selected methods applied to two slightly different 2-machine flow shop models. The experiment tests for statistical differences between mean and variance of the data used by each method to calculate steady state performance measures. Additionally, for each method, the practicality and ease-of-use for general applicability in larger modeled environments is discussed.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... In order for more people to be able to access this simulator, to share the simulation results, and to analyze simulation collaboratively, we have designed, developed and implemented an Internet-based three-tiered client/server framework, which consists of the three tiers: database, execution and user interface. The corresponding components are: database server, execution server, and Web based user interface. The relational database server enables users to interact with the persistent data sets for simulation study and maintains data integrity. The multi-agent based execution server guarantees stable user responsiveness by virtue of the multi-agent flexible architecture, accordingly achieving a high level of processing scalability. Finally the Web-based graphical user interface helps users to easily conduct the simulation study from anywhere at any time, and the visual simulation analysis tool helps users to make decisions effectively.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... This requires the correct estimation of the initial transient. A new method for determining the warm-up period, based upon the principles of statistical process control (SPC), is described. The method is tested on empirical data from a simulation model that has been used in a real-life study. In comparing the results to those from two commonly used warm-up methods, it appears that the SPC method performs well. The strengths and weaknesses of the approach are discussed.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Winter Simulation Conference. This study analyzes the capability of a current LHD-class amphibious ship to sustain a force deployed ashore through direct Ship-To-Objective Maneuver (STOM) of replenishment and logistics support. We have developed a simulation model that can evaluate performance of STOM operations using an LHD-class amphibious ship as a sea base. Results indicate a substantial increase in the number of aircraft, and reliability of those aircraft, and/or a substantial reduction in sustainment requirements are needed in order to successfully accomplish the scenarios used in this study. The results of this study could support the design of future LHD-class ships.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Winter Simulation Conference. More specifically, at the first stage we estimate the optimal parameter vector in the importance sampling distribution using CE, and at the second stage we estimate the desired rare event probability using importance sampling (likelihood ratios). Some theoretical aspects of the proposed method, including its convergence, are established. The numerical results presented suggest that the method effectively estimates rare event probabilities.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Winter Simulation Conference.
