This approach is based on some recently developed mathematical results for radial basis functions. It is systematic, explicitly controls the underfitting and overfitting tradeoff, and uses a fast computational algorithm that requires minimal human involvement. The models are used to study how production system design factors such as batching, uncertainty, and multitasking throughout this phase hamper supply chain performance. These factors all cause an increase in lead time. The models build on the STROBOSCOPE discrete-event simulation engine and illustrate several deterministic and probabilistic simulation scenarios including different batch sizes, uncertainty levels, and allocation percentages of shared resources. Based on the analysis of the simulation results, this paper recommends performance improvement opportunities that apply not only to the supply chain of pipe supports but generally to the delivery of capital projects.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... The processes are in a continuous state of change, are complex and stochastic, involve many moving objects, and require a good performance that can be measured in several different performance indicators. Within airports, but also between airports, the same kind of questions are answered over and over again. Often, however, new simulation models are built for each question, if possible copying some parts of previous models. Structured reuse of simulation components is rarely seen. This paper shows an approach for airport terminal modeling that departs from the assumption that reusable simulation building blocks can form the core of a powerful airport modeling tool, which is able to answer different questions at airports better and faster than traditional models. The building blocks have been implemented in the commercially available simulation language eM-Plant. Special purpose simulation (SPS) techniques have introduced computer modeling to the industry, resulting in reduced model development time and a user-friendly environment. This paper describes the special purpose simulation template, which is based on the tower crane operations performed by PCL Constructors Incorporated. On-site management of the tower crane resource is based on prioritized work tasks that need to be performed within a set period of time. Traditional SPS modeling techniques use 'relationship logic links' to represent the logic contained in the modeled system. As the number of work tasks increases for the tower crane resource, the model complexity using traditional simulation techniques becomes unmanageable, resulting in limited acceptance by industry practitioners. The tower crane template uses 'priority rating logic' to replace the 'relationship logic links'. Evaluation of the tower crane operations at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Research Facility (ECERF), being constructed in Edmonton, is used to illustrate the advantages of using the 'priority rating logic' modeling approach for tower crane operations. The simulation model analyzes the ECERF tower crane production cycle yielding outputs for total duration, crane utilization, and lift activity hook-time analysis.","PeriodicalId":74535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... The objective of the paper is to explore the prerequisites for this integration, using discrete event simulation as an aid for high quality decision making in early phases (conceptual design and pre-study). The paper looks at three aspects of the prerequisites: technological, operational, and organizational and summarizes the main challenges connected to each one of the aspects. The main result presented in the paper is a proposal for a simulation handbook, to be used when integrating simulation into the engineering process. The strength of the handbook is the focus on operational and organizational issues, reflecting different roles with connection to simulation. The large amount of data needed soon implied the use of a database connected to the simulation. This resulted in a simulation that not only imported the needed data for simulating but also data concerning the whole model structure. Only a basic structure is implemented and according to the data imported from the database the full simulation model is created on resetting. This offers a high flexibility: machines can be added and removed, parameters changed as well as the whole course of manufacture only by editing the corresponding data in the database. An international transporter process involves multiple ground pickup and delivery operations, package sorting and palletizing, airport operations and air transport. This paper describes a successful two-machine implementation of a distributed simulation model for an international transportation system in a supply chain network operation using Run Time Infrastructure of High Level Architecture software developed by the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office, the Distributed Manufacturing Simulation Adapter developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and ARENA simulation tool. By incorporating the capabilities provided by these tools, it was successful in establishing information flow exchange between the machines where one machine houses transport while the other has suppliers, customers, and distribution centers located in different parts of world. The paper investigates load sharing policies in a heterogeneous distributed system, where half of the total processors have double the speed of the others. Processor performance is examined and compared under a variety of workloads. Two job classes are considered. Programs of the first class are dedicated to fast processors, while second class programs are generic in the sense that they can be allocated to any processor. The objective is to find a policy that results in good overall performance while maintaining the fairness of individual job classes.
