Once diagnosed, pharmacologic and psychosocial therapies can reduce symptomatic expression and functional impairment. Traditionally thought to resolve by young adulthood, it is now recognized that ADHD persists into adulthood. Many of these individuals were never evaluated for ADHD as children and remain undiagnosed as adults, continuing to struggle with symptoms. It is common to develop compensatory strategies geared at mitigating the disruptive effects of ADHD. In this article, we provide an overview of adult ADHD, review changes to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria meant to facilitate diagnosis of ADHD during adulthood, and discuss various factors that serve as barriers to accurate detection of adult ADHD.</p>","PeriodicalId":73770,"journal":{"name":"Journal of health service psychology","volume":"49 1","pages":"11-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9884156/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9083485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Medical hospitalizations among individuals with AAN have significantly increased over the years and individuals with AAN are noted to have longer illness durations and greater weight loss prior to receiving care than individuals with AN. Additionally, AAN is noted to be two to three times more common than AN in community samples of adolescents. Given that AAN is a newer diagnosis, research knowledge and evidence-based treatment guidelines are emerging, yet pivotal. Thus, this article discusses specific considerations during assessment and treatment using Family Based Treatment (FBT) among adolescents diagnosed with AAN and clinical and ethical concerns involved while providing effective care and mitigating any weight bias or stigma related to historical and current weight status.</p>","PeriodicalId":73770,"journal":{"name":"Journal of health service psychology","volume":"49 1","pages":"41-51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9933807/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9078175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These complex issues with gender are just one aspect of the wide challenges related to diversity, equity and inclusion among medical professionals. While there are no \"one size fits all\" approaches, psychologists are well positioned to lead efforts related to promoting leadership equity, reducing burnout and raising engagement because of their training in communication skills, programmatic development and empathetic listening. This paper details several evidence-based efforts in which psychologists can lead in these ongoing issues for women in medicine.</p>","PeriodicalId":73770,"journal":{"name":"Journal of health service psychology","volume":"49 1","pages":"33-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9879246/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9130440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
