However, many instructors do not directly assess key learning objectives, creating a disparity between desired and actual learning. Using multiple assessment tools, we analyzed student survey and test data throughout a unit operations laboratory sequence to reveal student attitudes and perceptions of their learning experience alongside their actual knowledge and abilities gained.","PeriodicalId":72557,"journal":{"name":"Chemical engineering education","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80466568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes the current status of the design sequence followed by chemical engineering students at the Technion. The sequence has evolved over time, with the changes made resulting from perceived needs and opportunities, and all have been made with the objective to provide the most added value to our students. Invariably, these curriculum changes have been introduced hand-in-hand with changes in teaching pedagogy, which were incorporated to increase the degree to which students actively participate in their own learning process, culminating in the introduction of flipping in the complete sequence. Classroom experience with the flipped-class approach indicates that overall, students came to class and to the tutorials far better prepared than with the lecture-based approach. Furthermore, the performance of the students in final exams has been significantly improved since classroom activity has been transformed to active learning.","PeriodicalId":72557,"journal":{"name":"Chemical engineering education","volume":"65 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90228321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We measured how much problem-solving students learned, and how these students compared with data collected from seniors at the beginning of the capstone design course. Our results indicate the importance of cornerstone design courses, and highlight the need to better integrate problem-solving into the undergraduate curriculum.","PeriodicalId":72557,"journal":{"name":"Chemical engineering education","volume":"84 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91187187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
