BiFeO3 is still an interesting material from both fundamental and applied points of view. A unique characteristic of BiFeO3 film, the polymorphism was stabilised only using the epitaxial strain caused by the substrate of the film. Here we report the hydrothermal synthesis of biphasic BiFeO3 ceramics using low NaOH concentration and temperature. The ability of BiFeO3 ceramics to morph into tetragonal and rhombohedral allotropic phases was demonstrated, confirming the theoretical prediction that the polymorphism can be stabilised even in powder form. Based on our experimental study NaOH(aq) is proposed as responsible for the strain on the structure of the rhombohedral phase. In addition, the in-depth characterisation of this biphasic ceramic opens up new opportunities for the technological applications of BiFeO3 material.","PeriodicalId":7224,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Applied Ceramics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74314494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The physical properties, structural morphology and mechanical and thermal insulation behaviour of the two kinds of composites were further compared. Pore structure analysis shows that the PH-based C/CAs have a larger specific surface area (438.92 m2·g−1) and richer mesoporous volume than the PAN-based C/CAs. Mechanical behaviour of the C/CAs has been changed, but the stronger enhancement effects belong to PAN-based C/CAs (compressive strength in xy and z-directions are 1.63±0.10 MPa and 1.22±0.19 MPa, bending strength is 3.62±0.50 MPa). However, the PH-based C/CA composites have relatively low thermal conductivities, ranging from 0.027 to 0.164 W·m−1·K−1 between 25 and 1800°C.","PeriodicalId":7224,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Applied Ceramics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90533422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hot-pressed sample exhibited Vickers hardness of 10.93 ± 0.32 GPa and indentation fracture toughness of 3.16 ± 0.54 MPa.m1/2. Thermal conductivity (RT-2.99 W (m.K)−1) and diffusivity (RT–18.2 mm2 s−1) of the sample decreased with increasing temperature due to phonon scattering. Oxidation studies were carried out for the hot-pressed samples from 1000°C to 1200°C for 5, 48 and 100 h in air. The oxidation test results showed that ZrSi2 followed selective oxidation with Si diffusing into the oxide layers at high temperatures. At 1200°C, the surface of ZrSi2 oxidised completely to form a high-temperature stable phase, zircon (ZrSiO4). The autoclave test at 250°C and 250 bar shown negligible mass gain (∼0.022 g) which suggests the usage of ZrSi2 for nuclear fuel cladding applications.","PeriodicalId":7224,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Applied Ceramics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86942652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The influence of firing temperature on the phase composition of porous samples was analysed. In the present study, linear shrinkage, porosity and mean pore size of ZrO2-reinforced porous mullite ceramics increased, and volume density, mechanical strength and heat conductivity decreased. When the dosage of the blowing agent was 1.0 vol.-%, the flexural strength and compressive strength of ZrO2-reinforced porous mullite sample with 77.4% porosity respectively reached 3.0 and 10.9 MPa, and their heat conductivity was kept at 0.181 W m−1 K−1.","PeriodicalId":7224,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Applied Ceramics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81606413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The phase components of the DSEC were composed of MgAl2O4 phase growing along the preferred orientation 〈311〉 and Al2O3 phases growing along the preferred orientation 〈110〉. In the DSEC, the Al2O3 phase is the matrix phase mixed with part of MgAl2O4 phase and the other part of MgAl2O4 phase forms slice structure. Both the DSEC density and hardness decrease with the increase of the growth rate, due to the increase of micropores in DSEC with the higher growth rate. However, its fracture toughness improved due to the fine interface spacing toughening and the dispersion toughening. The highest hardness and fracture toughness of DSEC are 19.3 GPa and 3.74 MPa·m1/2, respectively, the toughening effect could be attributed to the crack deflection and bifurcation hindering the propagation of crack in DSEC.","PeriodicalId":7224,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Applied Ceramics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2022-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81977667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work demonstrates that multiple molten salts are more beneficial in facilitating the synthesis of Ti3SiC2 powder. The effect of reaction temperature on the purity of the synthesis was investigated, and the amount of excess Si required to compensate for their evaporating losses was determined. The powders were characterised by Various instruments. SEM and TEM images show that the as-prepared Ti3SiC2 retained its homogeneous morphology, and is near-pure, 500-600 nm in size, and generally well-dispersed. We believe that TiC and TiSi2 formed by the molten salt method at low temperatures is the dominant factor in the reduced synthesis temperature and good dispersion of the final Ti3SiC2 powder.","PeriodicalId":7224,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Applied Ceramics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2022-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91162356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
