A correlative histological and cytological study of 11 cases is presented. The leiomyosarcomas were characterized histologically by elongated tumour cells arranged in bundles intersecting each other at wide angles. The nuclei were elongated and often blunt-ended, tending to be aligned in tandem-position or in rows. The smears from leiomyosarcoma were poor in tumour cells and most cells were arranged in clusters of strands. The characteristic blunt-ended cells and nuclei of leiomyosarcoma could be identified in the smears and the nuclei were focally arranged in rows and sometimes in parallel. Nuclear atypia permits diagnosis of malignancy, although the atypia was generally not very pronounced. We consider that a knowledge of the corresponding histological features is mandatory for differentiating cytologically between various soft tissue sarcomas, including leiomyosarcomas. Further correlative cytological and histological studies of other soft tissue sarcomas are necessary for a more valid interpretation of the smears from leiomyosarcomas.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The inclusion body material was characterized by way of light- and electron microscopy and histochemical staining reactions. Nucleo-protein were not detected, but certian tests for amino acids were observed and, at the peripheral parts of the inclusion bodies, phospholipid tests were positive. However, forced proteolysis of lipid extractions failed to abolish the reactions for detection of carbohydrate-rich compounds in the inclusion bodies thus confirming that their main characteristics were those of glycoproteins. Series of histochemical tests demonstrated the presence of periodate-reactive 1, 2-glycol groups and sulphate radicals. Periodate-reactive material and sulphomucins represented two separate substances, as demonstrated by extractions and combined staining tests. Some characteristics common with chondroitin sulphates were observed but, on the other hand, the observed differences suggested a different type of sulphation. The inclusion body failed to show any hydrolytic, dehydrogenase or oxidative enzyme activities, thus being metabolically inactive, although the cells showed certain enzyme activities in their cytoplasm and cell organelles.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. These lesions contained young, connective tissue septa with abundant proliferation of bile ducts, piecemeal necroses and lymphocytic infiltration. Much less or no activity, was found in the lesion of 11 women and 2 men without hormone treatment. Possible mechanisms for this activity are discussed, and it is proposed that focal nodular hyperplasia represents a congenital malformation, possibly a hamartoma, the liver cells of which may suffer from enzymatic defects, which may render them especially vulnerable to female sex hormones.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. The man, suffering from arthralgias, respiratory obstruction, external ear and sanddle-nose deformities, conjunctivitis and irido-cyclitis, died after 4 years from airway obstruction because of tracheal and bronchial collapse. The woman is alive 8 months after the development of respiratory obstruction, probably caused by radiographically demonstrated tracheal obstruction, a saddle-nose deformity and hearing impairment. Microscopically, the involved cartilages showed degenerative and slight inflammatory changes and were eventually replaced by fibrous tissue. Histochemical studies, utilizing staining with Alcian blue at controlled electrolyte concentrations (Scott technique) and at controlled pH:s, with or without digestion with bacterial chondroitinase ABC; and staining with the PAS-method, with or without diastase digestion, revealed a complete or relative loss of glucosaminoglycans and glycogen. A biosynthetic defect is considered unlikely to be the primary pathogenetic mechanism of relapsing polychondritis. Histological and histochemical examination of biopsies from involved cartilages contribute to a definite diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. Electron-microscopy shows that the oxyphilic cells contain tightly packed mitochondria and that the transitory cells are rich in mitochondria. In these latter cells there are signs of stimulated protein synthesis. It is probable that these cells produce the excess of parathyroid hormone. Oxyphilic cells would seem to be developed from the chief cells.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica. Of the latter, 45 were hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 4 combined HCC and cholangiocarcinoma (CCC) and 3 CCC. HCC was found in 7.8 per cent of the cirrhotic livers and was in 57.1 per cent accompagnied by cirrhosis. The criteria of WHO, Peters (modified) and Anthony were used for classification. The degree of differentiation of the tumours was estimated using the criteria of WHO and Edmondson. The apparently small number of CCC may be due to the fact that this tumour is often overdiagnosed at the expense of HCC. The incidence of combined tumours is probably higher than generally assumed. The reticulin stain was found very valuable in HCC, both for descriptive and diagnostic purposes. In contrast to the situation in sub-Saharan Africa where hepatitis B virus is incriminated as the most important etiologic factor of HCC, it was found in the present study that alcoholism was a very essential cause of cirrhosis and thereby of HCC.","PeriodicalId":6953,"journal":{"name":"Acta pathologica et microbiologica Scandinavica.
