Several approaches have been proposed to improve the performance of SSVEP. The calibration-free scenario is significant in SSVEP-based brain–computer interface systems, where the subject is the first time to use the system. The participating teams proposed several effective calibration-free algorithm frameworks in the SSVEP competition (calibration-free) of the BCI Controlled Robot Contest in World Robot Contest 2021. This paper introduces the approaches used in the algorithms of the top five teams in the final. The results of the five subjects in the final proved the effectiveness of the approaches. This paper discusses the effectiveness of each approach in improving the system performance in the calibration-free scenario and gives suggestions on how to use these approaches in a real-world system.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44393923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mechanism of RSVP is detecting the P300 component corresponding to the target image to realize fast and correct recognition. This paper proposed an improved EEGNet model to achieve good performance in offline and online data. Specifically, the data were filtered by xDAWN to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The focal loss function was used instead of the cross-entropy loss function to solve the classification problems of unbalanced samples. Additionally, the subject-specific data were fed to the improved EEGNet model to obtain a subject-specific model. We applied the proposed model at the BCI Controlled Robot Contest in World Robot Contest 2021 and won the second place. The average recall rate of the four participants reached 51.56% in triple classification. In the offline data benchmark dataset (64 subjects-RSVP tasks), the average recall rates of groups A and B reached 76.07% and 78.11%, respectively. We provided an alternative method to identify targets based on the RSVP paradigm.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49375963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several improvement approaches have been proposed to improve the performance of RSVP analysis. In brain–computer interface systems based on RSVP, the family of approaches that do not depend on training specific parameters is essential. The participating teams proposed several effective training-free frameworks of algorithms in the ERP competition of the BCI Controlled Robot Contest in World Robot Contest 2021. This paper discusses the effectiveness of various approaches in improving the performance of the system without requiring training and suggests how to apply these approaches in a practical system. First, appropriate preprocessing techniques will greatly improve the results. Then, the non-deep learning algorithm may be more stable than the deep learning approach. Furthermore, ensemble learning can make the model more stable and robust.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41404012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eleven teams participated in the Algorithm Contest of Calibration-free Motor Imagery BCI. The participants employed both traditional electroencephalograph (EEG) analysis methods and deep learning-based methods in the contest. In this paper, we reviewed the algorithms utilized by the participants, extracted the trends and highlighted interesting approaches from these methods to inform future contests and research recommendations. Method: First, we analyzed the algorithms in separate steps, including EEG channel and signal segment setup, prepossessing technology, and classification model. Then, we emphasized the highlights of each algorithm. Finally, we compared the competition algorithm with the SOTA algorithm. Results: The algorithm employed in the finals performed better than that of the SOTA algorithm. This paper presents the winning solution to the supervised motor imagery (MI) task in the BCI Controlled Robot Contest in World Robot Contest 2021. Methods: Data augmentation, preprocessing, feature extraction, and model training are the main components of the solution. The model is based on EEGNet, a popular convolutional neural networks model for classifying electroencephalography data. Results: Despite the model’s lack of stability, this solution was the most successful in the task. The channels closest to the vertex were the most helpful in feature extraction. Conclusion: This solution is suitable for supervised MI tasks not only in this competition but also in future scenarios.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43297489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pain can impair emotional decision-making behaviors because it captures attention and distracts from the task at hand. Alternatively, pain may facilitate emotional decision-making behaviors by prompting alertness and mobilizing cognitive resources to maximize rewards. The present study investigated the influence of ongoing pain on emotional decision-making behaviors using the IGT. Our study recruited two groups of participants and applied capsaicin (pain group) or control cream (control group) to their forearms. We then compared performances and selections between the pain and control groups. The results revealed that participants successfully learned the required adaptive selection strategy as the task progressed. The study observed a tendency toward optimal choices for both groups under the condition of frequent–small losses. However, we observed a disadvantageous preference for the control group, but not the pain group, when faced with choices with infrequent but large losses. The study implies that a distressing pain experience motivates individuals to adjust goal-directed behaviors to maximize their rewards in a task. Thus, the finding suggests that ongoing pain facilitates emotional decision-making behaviors.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43252469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This neurobiological condition has been suggested to associate with bisphenol A (BPA) exposure during pregnancy. BPA is an inorganic compound used to produce polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. We conduct this study to investigate the effects of prenatal BPA exposure on the level of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunits, synaptic markers of the hippocampus and neurobehavioral outcomes in rats. The pregnant rats were given a daily dose of 5 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg of BPA with 0.5% Tween 80 orally from gestation day 2 until 21 (GD21). The level of GluN2A, GluN2B, PSD-95 and synapsin I in the hippocampus and its neurobehaviour outcomes were quantified and evaluated in the male foetus and adolescent rat. Prenatal BPA exposure reduced GluN2A, GluN2B, synapsin I and PSD-95 (Postsynaptic Density-95) in the male foetus and adolescent rat hippocampus compared to the control group. The prenatal BPA exposed rats demonstrated anxiety-related behaviour and impairment in aversive and spatial memory. The findings suggested that the impairment in neurobehavioral performance may inhibit the signalling pathway in the NMDA receptor subunits in the male foetus rat hippocampus leading to learning and memory deficits when reaching adolescence.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43482734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dysregulation of this pathway reportedly plays an important role in the progression of various human cancers. Yes-association protein (YAP), the Hippo pathway’s core effector, is considered a marker for cancer therapy and patient prognosis. In addition, studies have indicated that YAP is involved in promoting anticancer drug resistance. This review summarizes current knowledge on YAP’s role in cancer progression, anticancer drug resistance, and advances in the development of YAP-targeting drugs. A thorough understanding of the complex interactions among molecular, cellular, and environmental factors concerning YAP function in cancer progression may provide new insight into the underlying mechanism of anticancer drug resistance. It might lead to improved prognosis through novel combined therapies.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47959105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considerable progress has been made in the aspects of stimulus coding, electroencephalogram processing, and recognition algorithms to enhance system performance. The properties of SSVEP have been demonstrated to be highly sensitive to stimulus luminance. However, thus far, there have been very few reports on the impact of background luminance on the system performance of SSVEP-based BCIs. This study investigated the impact of stimulus background luminance on SSVEPs. Specifically, this study compared two types of background luminance, i.e., (1) black luminance [red, green, blue (rgb): (0, 0, 0)] and (2) gray luminance [rgb: (128, 128, 128)], and determined their effect on the classification performance of SSVEPs at the stimulus frequencies of 9, 11, 13, and 15 Hz. The offline results from nine healthy subjects showed that compared with the gray background luminance, the black background luminance induced larger SSVEP amplitude and larger signal-to-noise ratio, resulting in a better classification accuracy. These results suggest that the background luminance of visual stimulus has a considerable effect on the SSVEP and therefore has a potential to improve the BCI performance.","PeriodicalId":67062,"journal":{"name":"Brain Science Advances","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46188025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
