In the new technological environment, new modeling and analysis approaches need to be developed to study the reliability and economic impacts of DER on the electric distribution system operation. In this study, a novel method for approximating nodal voltage sensitivities is proposed, based on some important observations made about the radial distribution system. The proposed method can efficiently compute voltage sensitivities for all network nodes based on one topology search and one power flow solution. The results have been validated using the perturbation analysis performed on the IEEE 13-Bus Test Feeder model. The proposed method for voltage sensitivity approximation can be applied in the studies of large unbalanced radial distribution systems for supporting distribution system planning and operation decisions.","PeriodicalId":6497,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"2 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89934347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, two different PHS technologies are studied, namely the traditional fixed-speed technology and the adjustable-speed technology. Mathematical models are developed for the two types of PHS technologies. A two-step approach is proposed to evaluate and compare the capabilities of the two PHS technologies to provide regulation reserves. The proposed approach represents the scheduling and the deployment of regulation reserves. The case study shows that the adjustable-speed PHS is more effective than the fixed-speed PHS in balancing renewable uncertainties in power systems.","PeriodicalId":6497,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"9 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89986757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The platform has the features of scalability, real time, service-oriented architecture and high reliability. Compared to traditional platforms in the power industry, the significant benefit of the innovative platform is that end users can use the data with the global model to drive the self-customized services rather than depend on IT professionals to deploy the service. The paper also describes how to implement data integration, global model construction and big data driven analytics, which are difficult to achieve with traditional solutions. Meanwhile, the paper exhibits preliminary visualization results through data analysis in real scenarios.","PeriodicalId":6497,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91345913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, it is difficult for the system operator to determine the optimal amount of conventional generation that should be committed and its corresponding power production in order to reduce generation costs. Incorporation of forecasting error on the optimal unit scheduling has been extensively suggested in the literature. However, it strongly depends on the probability distribution adopted to represent wind power forecasting error. Cauchy distribution has demonstrated to be an adequate tool to represent forecasting error. In this paper, an analytical model to solve dynamic economic dispatch is presented. The proposed model is based on discretization of Cauchy distribution, so that its incorporation in the optimization problem is successfully done. This is illustrated by analyzing a representative case study and the results are compared to a Monte Carlo Simulation approach in order to show the accuracy of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":6497,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"67 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76657896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The traditional unit commitment only consider the deterministic load and wind output in next day and use the operating reserve to handle the net load uncertainty. In this paper, the stochastic unit commitment is developed to address the uncertainty of load and wind output. The time series model Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) is applied to provide the point estimation and prediction interval for next 24 hours based on the historical load and wind data. The Monte-Carlo simulation and scenario reduction is applied to generate the scenarios and reduce the scenario number. The Benders Decomposition is used to solve the large scale stochastic programming problem in a more efficient manner. A 6 bus system is simulated and studied for the proposed model and algorithm.","PeriodicalId":6497,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"24 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78144924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The generator two-axis model has been rewritten to include field current as an input. The model consists of a set of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) containing an algebraic equation for the balance of currents. The measured data used are three-phase terminal voltages and currents and field current, which are easily obtained in real applications. Furthermore, to avoid singularities during the solution of the model equation, a special approach based on trajectory sensitivity method is performed due to uncertainties in the parameter. The algorithm was tested with simulation data and provided satisfactory results.","PeriodicalId":6497,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"9 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74394321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
