The rectenna is designed for wireless power transmission or microwave energy harvesting application in ISM 900 MHz band and exhibits a very good measured conversion efficiency $(>mathbf{25}%)$ on a non-optimal load $(mathbf{10k}Omega)$ for very low microwave power densities $(> mathbf{0.18}mu mathbf{W}/mathbf{cm}^{mathbf{2}})$. The measured DC voltage $(> mathbf{330 mV}$ for microwave power density of at least 0.22 $mu mathbf{W}/mathbf{cm}^{mathbf{2}})$ obtained from this planar rectenna is in the range of the cold turn-on/start-up voltage of modern commercial off-the-shelf DC-to-DC boost converters and power management units. The proposed rectenna is also very compact: its physical surface $(mathbf{10.5} mathbf{x 6 cm}^{mathbf{2}})$ is only 5% of the square wavelength at the operating frequency (860 MHz).","PeriodicalId":6472,"journal":{"name":"2018 48th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"777-780"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80926709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apart from the theoretical interest of the phenomenon, this effect has potential applications in practical systems demanding narrow band, slow light propagation and high non-linearity. The physical mechanism behind this phenomenon can be interpreted in terms of a coupled resonators system, which can be implemented by means of coupled resonant LC circuits. In this work we propose an extremely simple periodic electromagnetic system exhibiting EIR and a Foster-like circuit model involving uncoupled resonators accounting for the fundamental resonances of the electromagnetic structure. The specific unit cell treated in this contribution consists of three identical coupled slits made in a thin conducting plate. The features of the transmission band and the induced narrow transmission dips are easily explained in terms of the values of the parameters of the equivalent Foster-like circuit. Some rules for tailoring the location of the transmission dip and the bandwidth of the passband where the dip is located are given. The results obtained with the circuit model are validated by proper comparison with simulations carried out by using a commercial electromagnetic solver.","PeriodicalId":6472,"journal":{"name":"2018 48th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"145-148"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81969598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Impedance matching of the diodes is achieved by scaling the external quality factors and adjusting the resonant frequencies of the filter cavities. This removes most of the matching structures from the high loss microstrip circuit to the lower loss waveguide resonators. Here the output frequency of the tripler is set to be 90 GHz with a 10% bandwidth. The simulation shows a conversion loss of 13−13.8 dB in the pass-band with an input power of 13−20 dBm. The measured conversion loss over the pass-band is 13.6−15.8 dB for 17 dBm input power and better than 14 dB at 90 GHz for 13−20 dBm input power.","PeriodicalId":6472,"journal":{"name":"2018 48th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)","volume":"369 1","pages":"1317-1320"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76444382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A surface impedance, used in computer simulations, is calculated from the dielectric constant of the material. The dielectric constant is modeled by a Drude-Lorentz resonance, fitted to experimental results. The approach allowed to study the nanotube-induced losses and finite-size resonance effects in optically-controlled, dielectric rod waveguide-based phase shifters. The correctness of the model was verified both by the simulated and the measured S-parameters in the W-band.","PeriodicalId":6472,"journal":{"name":"2018 48th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)","volume":"16 4 1","pages":"827-830"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77557952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technique has significant advantages over conventional approaches when only limited space is available. While recent works show the enhancement for targets in the vicinity of the boresight direction only, this work presents a more generalized design methodology to enhance the angle estimation for off-boresight targets. The transition is based on a differentially-fed patch radiating element that excites a rectangular waveguide through a compact U-shaped metal adapter. The response of a single transition has been extracted from the measurement results of the fabricated back-to-back structure using a TRL calibration standard realized on the same substrate. It also allowed to accurately calibrate the differential line loss. The transition provides maximum 0.8 dB insertion loss and more than 15 dB return loss over the 57–64 GHz frequency band, whereas differential line loss of 1.3 dB per centimeter is mainly determined by the chosen substrate material. High performance and cost-effective design makes the proposed transition highly promising for different mm Wave transceivers and for verification of custom planar devices using standard waveguide test equipment.","PeriodicalId":6472,"journal":{"name":"2018 48th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)","volume":"31 1","pages":"663-666"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74001819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on the segmentation/recombination technique, which permits to divide the component into homogeneously-filled building blocks. The BI-RME method is used to calculate the generalized admittance matrix (GAM) of each arbitrarily shaped building block by solving an integral equation, which is obtained enforcing the appropriate boundary condition to the electromagnetic field. The GAMs are then cascaded to obtain the frequency response of the whole component. Any possible shape of the interconnecting surfaces can be treated with this implementation due to the adoption of the RWG basis functions to represent the unknown electric and magnetic surface currents. The theory of the method is outlined in this paper, and a numerical example demonstrates the capabilities of the proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":6472,"journal":{"name":"2018 48th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"444-447"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74586024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The network formalism is adopted to model the link and standard gain functions are used to describe the two-port network performance. The case where the load and the source are given and the goal is to find the optimal parameters of the link is solved. Analytical expressions are derived and validated through circuital simulations. It is demonstrated that by acting on the couplings of the relay elements with the transmitting and the receiving resonators it is possible to maximize all the three gains (power, available and transducer gains).","PeriodicalId":6472,"journal":{"name":"2018 48th European Microwave Conference (EuMC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"182-185"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74743188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
