While the inner layer aids in the antenna miniaturization, the more compact upper layer helps in further reduction of the mutual coupling between the miniaturized patch antennas which is otherwise not possible for a single-layer EBG. Two similar designs are proposed: the first one is made of a thick metallic plate, whereas the second one is made of a thin copper plate fabricated on top of a Rogers 5880 dielectric substrate. A compact structure can be achieved since this integration eliminates additional volume of the antenna and transition structure between the resonator and antenna. A resonator/antenna is demonstrated to verify the proposed technique. The resonator/antenna size is 14 by 13 by 3 mm. The resonant frequency of the resonator, i.e. 10.13 GHz, can be wirelessly detected at distances up to 55 mm. The proposed method first linearizes the otherwise non-linear FEM matrix dependence with respect to the geometry variation, and then uses a uniformly sampled balanced truncation proper orthogonal decomposition (BT-POD) reduction algorithm to expediently sweep over the parametric geometry space. The approach avoids slow re-meshing and full matrix reassembly by using mesh morphing approaches. Moreover, BT-POD is known to provide close to optimal size reduced problems using only a small number of samples, thus minimizing the the number of full-model solutions. Using sub-arrays simplifies the array design by allowing the designer to concentrate on the smaller sub-array and repeating it throughout the rest of the array. Anomalous grating lobes have been shown to appear in large uniform arrays caused by systematic errors in the design of sub-array. Thus, it is important for the sub-array designer to be able to diagnose errors in the sub-array design before incorporating it into the larger array. This paper will categorize and demonstrate specific sub-array pattern distortions that can cause grating lobes to appear in uniform arrays. In addition, a design example will present how recognition of the aforementioned distortions can be used to diagnose and prevent the appearance of grating lobes. This will be done by showing the design process of a 1×16 linear array design that uses four 1×4 sub-arrays. All the fabricated antennas are incorporated inside the TV receiver body. In this paper, we present a design of a leaf-shaped bowtie antenna in which a periodic patch-loaded grounded slab is used in order to realize a unidirectional beam over a wide frequency range while maintaining a low-profile configuration. The analysis assumes randomly distributed elements with uniform distribution to evaluate the statistically averaged beam pattern for linear, planar (square and circular), and volumetric (cubical, cylindrical, and spherical) geometries used to bound the array. Results show that many simple geometries share analytical similarities due to symmetry.
