For the purpose of evaluating the hydrophobicity of polymer insulator, a VHF antenna was utilized to receive high frequency electromagnetic signals, which were induced during the surface discharge on the sample surface. The wavelet theory was applied to analyze the electromagnetic signals that were processed by signal-processing system. The obtained 3-D images of surface discharge, which contains the frequency, the time and the amplitude, can figure out the hydrophobicity of polymer insulator with different ageing time efficiently. Based on 3-D images, 2-D contour line spectra were set up for investigating the complexity of discharge. The fractal dimensions of 2-D spectra and lacunarity were computed to assess the severity of surface discharge quantificationally. It is found that the series of methods using PD-induced electromagnetic wave can efficiently recognize the characteristics the discharge on the surface of insulators, which can be utilized to evaluate the hydrophobicity of polymer insulators.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"15 1","pages":"407-410"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87784658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Silane-coated hollow microspheres are used to modify the interfaces between microspheres and epoxy resin, and SiO2 nanofiller is used to modify the matrix. Electrical investigations show a positive impact of the silane-coating on the ac and dc breakdown field strength. Mechanical investigations show an increased mechanical strength of the material due to an improved adhesion quality between microspheres and epoxy resin. The nanofillers show no significant influence on the properties of the cured syntactic foam. However, it is verified that nanofillers reduce the viscosity of the uncured, liquid material. This provides a better production quality of the material at high microspheres' filling degrees.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"482 1","pages":"632-635"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85773730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since all these parameters may affect the discharge ignition voltage, the classical paschen curve has to be replotted according to these parameters. In this paper we firstly investigated the domain of validity of two corrective expressions on the paschen's law found in the literature, in case of changing the air environment: Peek and Dunbar corrections. After that, the effect of the low pressure combined to high temperature on the breakdown voltage at the left of the Paschen minimum has been investigated. Results show two different behaviours of Paschen curve related to temperature and pressure that can be explained by the variation of the breakdown mechanisms, and supported by measuring the energy dissipated in the electric discharge by means of the Lissajous figures at different conditions. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the electrical breakdown in gases occurs due to the gas or vacuum mechanism managed by the temperature and/or the pressure.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"13 1","pages":"464-467"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85878839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different kinds of common defects (voids, delaminations, etc.) have been intentionally produced inside the mass insulation and on the surface of the test objects. External influence parameters, such as surface pollution, have been taken. All the sample test pieces are subjected to several PD tests and the relevant acquired data are stored and processed. The outcome evidences that digital PD acquisitions may allow to efficiently spot the defects and to identify their morphology.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"2 1","pages":"493-496"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86593727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show that by correctly adjusting the ageing cycle consisting of UV radiation, heat, clean and salt fog it is possible to age power equipment at an accelerated rate (a factor of 5 and greater) and obtain the same type of damage (UV damage, tracking and erosion due to surface discharges, cracking) as observed at the natural ageing site. Although many different types of outdoor power equipment will still have to be tested, the first results based on epoxy insulated power equipment are encouraging.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"20 1","pages":"381-386"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76046681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electrical equipment used in subsea installations are subjected to high hydrostatic pressures and seawater, often combined with high temperatures and even reactive chemical environments, making new challenges for the materials involved. The test method used for PD-testing is based on the Cigré II method. The method has been used in dry and humid conditions to identify the effect of humidity on the degradation of insulation materials subjected to PD relevant for subsea applications. The insulation materials samples were 2 millimeter thick disks of POM (polyoxymethylene) and XLPE (cross-linked homo-polymer polyethylene). The samples where subjected to surface discharges in a 1 mm sphere-to-plane electrode gap. The results show that the humidity during testing had a significant impact on material erosion and material transport in the electrode gap. POM was more rapidly degraded by PD than XLPE.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"87 1","pages":"448-451"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78959336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Silica (10nm and 400nm) has been used as a filler to increase the lifetime of such varnishes submitted to a partial discharge activity (varnish to be used in rotating machines fed by inverters). Experimental results have shown that both dielectric strength and conduction current are affected by the fillers. The higher the conduction current, the lower the DC breakdown strength. The modelling has consequently been focused on the thermal breakdown theory to explain these experimental data.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"34 1","pages":"736-739"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76400495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The insertion of an insulating barrier leads to an important prebreakdown current decrease. The barrier acts as a geometrical and electrostatic obstacle for the disruptive discharge. We present in the paper a comparison between the prebreakdown current in the system with barrier to that one without barrier. We have considered the parameters of the barrier such as its position between the electrodes, and its nature. We observe that the evolution of the pre-breakdown current versus the applied voltage has a capacitive behavior. The equivalent impedance of the oil gap is deduced from the experimental current-voltage characteristics.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"29 1","pages":"744-747"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88368701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These volumes could be depicted as the volumes in which the deformed molecules relax following the disturbance associated with the bond breaking. Both parameters are decreasing exponentially with time under constant field application. However, the time scales for the bonds breaking and for the molecular relaxations are not the same. When the energy barrier is calculated as a function of time for different fields and sample size, it appears that it is oscillating with time. Interestingly, the frequency of the oscillations is identical to the oscillations of wave packets observed in space charge measurements under the same experimental conditions. The influence of all contributing parameters is discussed and it is concluded that oscillations exist under all fields above the critical (threshold) field but at low fields, the time of appearance of the first one could be so long that it has never been recorded. The significance and implications of this phenomenon are briefly discussed.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"36 1","pages":"93-96"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91383955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Phenomenon is known to have huge capacitance. The purpose of the present study is analysis of behavior of ions in electric double layer. For this purpose, we measured capacitance of EDL in 5 wt% NaCl solution at room temperature using step voltage and ramp voltage. We also observed characteristics of EDL at low temperature. We obtained following results. The capacitance by the ramp voltage is about ten times larger than that by the step voltage. EDL is kept in frozen NaCl solution after short-circuiting. Capacitance of frozen EDL is larger than that of liquid EDL at room temperature.","PeriodicalId":6317,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"11 1","pages":"816-819"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86912196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
