In this study, we detected 40 morphological characteristics from 100 colonies in 49 regions. We not only evaluated the morphometric characteristics of honey bee populations in the QTP but also found that the pigmentation of labrum and tergite 2 in A. cerana is significantly different from that in Apis mellifera. Moreover, most morphological characteristics were correlated with environmental factors. Tibet and Qinghai could be distinctly separated. The cluster analysis indicated that Xunhua and Danba were far apart and formed a single cluster. Honey bees from Danba and Linzhichayu were correctly judged into corresponding populations. There was large morphometric diversity within the selected sampling areas of the Sichuan, Yunnan, and Gansu populations. Overall, our findings offer insights into the conservation and sustainable utilization of A. cerana in the QTP.
","PeriodicalId":56144,"journal":{"name":"Life-Basel","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11856382/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143506090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Minimally invasive renal-sparing strategies like robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RPN) are favored, but a transperitoneal approach may be limited by the previous transplant surgery and the location of the DKT; in such cases, CT-guided cryoablation may be an alternative option. In this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to compare RPN and cryoablation for the treatment of DKT in LT recipients. The primary endpoints were the efficacy (R0 resection in RPN, absence of the tumor at first follow-up for cryoablation) and the safety of the procedures (postoperative morbidity and increase in creatine level). The periprocedural costs and the oncologic efficacy (recurrence and overall survival) were the secondary endpoints. Twelve LT recipients (91.7% males, mean age 65 years) underwent RPN (n = 6) or cryoablation (n = 6) for DKT; the median interval between LT and diagnosis of DKT was 142.5 vs. 117.5 months, respectively. Efficacy was obtained in all patients after RPN and cryoablation. Postoperative morbidity was 16.7% in each group, and the postoperative increase in creatinine values was similar. Hospital stay was shorter following cryoablation vs. RPN (3.1 vs. 6.7 days; p = 0.03). The mean procedural costs were higher for RPN. There was no mortality and none of the patients had signs of recurrence after a median follow-up of 40.5 months. Both RPN and CT-guided cryoablation were safe and effective for the treatment of selected patients with DKT after LT. When applicable, cryoablation may be cost-effective and provide faster recovery.
","PeriodicalId":56144,"journal":{"name":"Life-Basel","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11856640/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143506388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Extensive evidence from randomized controlled trials has indicated that GLP-1RAs have benefits well beyond weight loss and glucose control, extending from reductions in cardiovascular mortality to reductions in prostate cancer risk. Notably, some benefits of GLP-1RAs for the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) system arise before weight loss occurs for reasons that are not entirely clear but are key to patient care and drug development. Here, we hypothesize that GLP-1RAs act by inducing calorie restriction and by activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which not only provides an explanation for the unique effectiveness of GLP-1RAs but also indicates a common mechanism shared by effective CKM therapies, including salicylates, metformin, statins, healthy diet, and physical activity. Whether AMPK activation is obligatory for effective CKM therapies should be considered. As such, we propose a mechanism of action for GLP-1RAs and explain how it provides an overarching framework for identifying means of preventing and treating cardiovascular, kidney, metabolic and related diseases, as well as informing the complementary question as to the components of a healthy lifestyle.
","PeriodicalId":56144,"journal":{"name":"Life-Basel","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11857512/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143505966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to develop precise predictive models to characterize the growth and interaction dynamics of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and Listeria monocytogenes, which serve as bioprotective agents in food systems. Using both traditional and machine learning modelling approaches, we analyzed data from previously published growth curves in broth (BHI) and milk under isothermal conditions (4, 10, and 30 °C). The models evaluated mono-culture conditions for L. monocytogenes and LAB, as well as their competitive interactions in co-culture scenarios. The modified Gompertz model demonstrated the best performance for mono-culture simulations, while a combination of the modified Gompertz and Lotka-Volterra models effectively described co-culture interactions, achieving high adjusted R-squared values (adjusted R2 = 0.978 and 0.962) and low root mean square errors (RMSE = 0.324 and 0.507) for BHI and milk, respectively. Machine learning approaches further validated these findings, with improved statistical indices (adjusted R2 = 0.988 and 0.966, RMSE = 0.242 and 0.475 for BHI and milk, respectively), suggesting their potential as robust alternatives to traditional methods. The integration of machine learning-assisted software developed in this work into predictive microbiology demonstrates significant advancements by bypassing the conventional primary and secondary modelling steps, enabling a streamlined, precise characterization of microbial interactions in food products.
","PeriodicalId":56144,"journal":{"name":"Life-Basel","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11856248/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143506336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the bidirectional relationship between these conditions, emphasizing their impact on morbidity, treatment adherence, and quality of life. Through a comprehensive review of the peer-reviewed literature, we explore the physiological, neuroinflammatory, and psychosocial mechanisms that underpin these interactions. Key psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, cognitive impairments, and psychosis, are identified as critical contributors to diagnostic complexity and therapeutic hurdles. Our findings underscore the importance of integrated, multidisciplinary care models, advocating for early detection, routine mental health screening, and personalized treatment strategies. Challenges such as overlapping symptoms, diagnostic ambiguities, and potential drug interactions are critically analyzed, with practical, evidence-based recommendations proposed for clinical practice. Despite advancements, significant research gaps persist, particularly the lack of longitudinal studies and the limited application of precision medicine tailored to this population. Future directions focus on enhancing diagnostic tools, developing innovative therapeutic approaches, and integrating mental health services into routine care. This study highlights the critical need for holistic, patient-centered approaches to manage comorbid psychiatric and internal medical conditions, offering actionable insights to improve outcomes and bridge existing gaps in research and practice.
","PeriodicalId":56144,"journal":{"name":"Life-Basel","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11856229/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143506222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fifty-six female Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of eight experimental groups, evaluating the impact of Western and standard diets, exercise and sedentarism, and the induction of mammary cancer. Mammary cancer was induced via the intraperitoneal administration of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) (50 mg/kg) at seven weeks of age. The resistance training protocol consisted of ladder climbing three times per week for an 18-week period, with a gradual increase in load over time. At the end of the 20-week experimental period, the animals were anesthetized and underwent echocardiography. Subsequently, the animals were euthanized, and organs and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were collected and analyzed. A histopathological examination was performed on the mammary tumors. The Western diet increased relative VAT and contributed to cardiovascular and tumor-related changes, including an increase in interventricular septum thickness (IVS) and left ventricle posterior wall thickness (LVPW) at end-systole. Exercise reduced fat accumulation, improved cardiac performance, and helped regulate cardiovascular function, as indicated by a higher eccentricity index (EI) in the WD+EX group compared to the WD group. The WD was associated with increased VAT accumulation and initially delayed tumor initiation; however, over time, it contributed to bigger tumor aggressiveness. This diet also delayed tumor initiation but increased LVPW. Exercise, when combined with a WD, accelerated tumorigenesis, malignant transformation and invasiveness, resulted in the higher prevalence of invasive tumors. These findings underscore the complex and potentially compounding effects of diet and exercise on cancer progression.
","PeriodicalId":56144,"journal":{"name":"Life-Basel","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11856199/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143506296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these therapies have introduced unintended cardiovascular risks, with atherosclerovascular disease (ASCVD) emerging as a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among cancer survivors. The development of ASCVD in this population involves multifactorial mechanisms, including endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, and disrupted lipid metabolism. This review examines the various mechanisms through which anticancer chemotherapy contributes to ASCVD and highlights strategies for risk assessment and management. Each class of anticancer agents presents distinct cardiovascular challenges: anthracyclines induce oxidative stress and endothelial damage, promoting foam cell formation and plaque progression; taxanes and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors impair lipid metabolism and vascular stability; anti-metabolites exacerbate endothelial injury through reactive oxygen species; and mTOR inhibitors, hormonal therapies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and immune checkpoint inhibitors disrupt lipid profiles and inflammatory pathways, increasing the risk of plaque rupture and thrombosis. Mitigating chemotherapy-induced ASCVD necessitates a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. Detailed pre-treatment cardiovascular risk assessments must address traditional and cancer-specific risk factors, including demographics, pre-existing conditions, and modifiable behaviors such as smoking and inactivity. Pharmacological interventions like statins and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, paired with lifestyle modifications, are essential to reducing ASCVD risk. In resource-limited settings, cost-effective strategies should be prioritized to enhance accessibility. Establishing cardio-oncology units facilitates care coordination, while long-term surveillance enables timely detection and intervention. While kidney biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis, it often fails to provide adequate insight into the underlying etiology of GN. Current classification systems have limited our understanding of the disease's pathophysiology and hinder the development of targeted therapies. Immunosuppressive treatments, such as glucocorticoids, calcineurin inhibitors, cyclophosphamide, and rituximab, remain the mainstay of therapy, though many patients fail to achieve remission or experience significant adverse effects. Moreover, the complex and multifactorial nature of GN pathogenesis calls for more refined therapeutic approaches. In recent years, multitarget therapies-combining different immunosuppressive agents targeting distinct immune pathways-have emerged as promising alternatives. Evidence suggests that multitarget therapy may offer superior outcomes compared to standard treatments. Despite early success, further studies are needed to optimize these regimens, reduce toxicity, and extend benefits to a broader range of GN patients. The development of personalized, biomarker-driven treatments, potentially leveraging innovative drug delivery systems and targeted biologics, holds promise for transforming GN care in the future.
","PeriodicalId":56144,"journal":{"name":"Life-Basel","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11857484/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143506150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
