Fish-derived cells sensitive to heavy metals have been used as valuable tools for ecotoxicological assessments. However, this method requires a minimum toxicity treatment time of 96 h, which limits its use when rapid ecotoxicological assessments are required or ecotoxicological assessments of a large number of toxicants are performed. In this study, these limitations were overcome by adjusting parameters including the concentration of fetal bovine serum (FBS) in the medium and the treatment time of the toxicant. Specifically, we found that the maximum time for fish cells to remain unstarved was 6 h when using a medium containing 1% FBS. We applied both parameters to the ecotoxicological assessment (using a medium containing 1% FBS for the toxicity assessment and treating the toxicant for only 6 h). Surprisingly, these adjusted parameters allowed us to obtain faster and more accurate data than the traditional assessment. This improvement was due to the new assessment conditions that minimized the possibility that the growth-inducing effects of nutrients present in excess in the medium could interfere with the cellular response to the toxicant. The accuracy of this assessment was not limited to measuring the toxicity of heavy metals. In conclusion, we have established an ecotoxicity assessment that can generate rapid and accurate data on heavy metals. Here we therefore consider the application of the Clavien-Dindo classification to evaluate postoperative complications after body-contouring surgeries. <b>Methods</b>: A retrospective study on 602 patients who underwent body-contouring surgery between 2009 and 2015 at our institution was performed. The length of hospital stays, age, sex, follow-up visits, and postoperative complications were evaluated and classified using the Clavien-Dindo classification. <b>Results</b>: We raised a total of 672 body-contouring procedures on 602 patients (563 female, 39 male). According to the Clavien-Dindo System, the severity of postoperative complications following body-contouring procedures was significantly correlated with the duration of hospitalization (mean 5.8 ± 2.7 days) and the number of follow-up visits (mean 4.4 ± 4.7). <b>Conclusions</b>: The Clavien-Dindo classification offers a valid prediction for postoperative hospital stay and the number of follow-up visits after body-reshaping surgery. While home-based CR offers a viable alternative, it faces challenges in participation due to factors such as a lack of self-motivation and fear of exercising without supervision. Utilizing a mobile healthcare application (app) during counseling may be an effective strategy for patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess whether 6 weeks of home-based CR with exercise readjustment using a mobile app is an effective therapy for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Post-AMI patients eligible for home-based CR were randomized into the intervention group (CR-Mobile) and the control group, which followed the usual home-based CR protocol (CR-Usual). Both groups participated in a 6-week home-based CR program, with exercise readjustment and encouragement carried out every 2 weeks. The CR-Mobile group was supervised using data recorded in the mobile app, while the CR-Usual group was supervised via phone consultations. The consumption of meat and produce contaminated with virulent <i>E. coli</i> from animal sources is associated with human illnesses and outbreaks. Heat treatment is an antimicrobial intervention that is commonly used during meat processing to ensure effective reductions in microbial load. Extreme heat resistance (XHR) has been reported among meat-borne <i>E. coli</i> and is mainly attributed to an ~15-19 kb genetic element known as the transmissible locus of stress tolerance (tLST). XHR <i>E. coli</i> can resist treatments used during meat processing and cooking. Therefore, the detection of heat-resistant <i>E. coli</i> is important for devising effective control measures to prevent meat spoilage and ensure meat safety. Here, we present methods used to (1) screen for tLST genes by multiplex PCR and (2) screen and isolate XHR <i>E. coli</i> from meat sources. The mode of heat exposure affects the outcome of XHR testing. The blood plasma from fifteen clinically healthy sheep and six sheep with neurological symptoms was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy in order to establish the contribution of kynurenic acid (KYNA), the neuroprotective metabolite of the kynurenine pathway, to the total fluorescence of the plasma. CT scans were used to confirm the presence of cysts in the central nervous system of sheep with neurological symptoms. The fluorescence spectroscopy analysis and further spectra deconvolution process revealed some significantly lower KYNA contributions to the total plasma fluorescence in sheep with coenurosis compared to healthy controls. Native to the western Atlantic, it has expanded to European coastal waters since the early 1900s. Despite its ecological and commercial importance, genetic research on this species is limited. Here we show a comprehensive investigation of the genetic variation and evolutionary history in <i>Callinectes sapidus</i> using 667 mitochondrial COI gene sequences. Our dataset encompasses 36 newly generated sequences from previously understudied Mediterranean sites and 631 from worldwide locations obtained from the GenBank public database. Our findings reveal two distinct, but closely related, genetic groups within the species' distribution range, suggesting the occurrence of a potential species complex. Furthermore, in the Mediterranean, low levels of genetic variability were observed except for substantial haplotypic differentiation in Turkish samples. The Ammonium Transporter (Amt), a highly conserved, atypical olfactory receptor, has been shown to mediate the detection of ammonia in insects. While the attraction of Tephritidae to ammonia is well established, knowledge about the <i>Amt</i> in this family is limited. The species <i>Bactrocera dorsalis</i> (Hendel 1912), <i>Bactrocera cucurbitae</i> (Coquillett 1899), <i>Bactrocera correcta</i> Bezzi 1916 and <i>Bactrocera tau</i> (Walker 1849), which are common agricultural pests within Tephritidae, exhibit numerous ecological similarities, offering a solid foundation for studying <i>Amt</i> characteristics in this family. In this study, we elucidated the sequences, evolutionary relationships, and expression patterns of <i>Amt</i> in these four species. The results indicated that these <i>Amts</i> share the same open reading frame, containing 1770 bp that encode a protein of 589 amino acid residues. These Amt proteins exhibit the typical structural characteristics of Amts, including an 11-transmembrane domain with an extracellular N-terminus and an intracellular C-terminus. They also have the ability to form trimers in the membrane. Additionally, they contain three conserved amino acid residues essential for ammonia transport: A189, H195, and H352. Phylogenetic and expression pattern analyses showed that they are highly conserved in Diptera and are significantly expressed in antennae. This study is the first report characterizing the Amt gene in four Tephritidae species. An MRI of 41 ankle joints of 21 haemophilic boys was performed on a 3 T MRI system using an mGRE sequence in addition to the conventional protocol. Conventional MRI and mGRE were separately and independently assessed by three readers, namely, two musculoskeletal radiologists and a general radiologist for joint hemosiderin. We set as a reference the consensus reading of the two musculoskeletal radiologists, who also evaluated the presence of synovial thickening, effusion, and osteochondral changes. Excellent inter-reader agreement was obtained using the mGRE sequence compared to the conventional protocol (ICC: 0.95-0.97 versus 0.48-0.89), with superior sensitivity (90-95% versus 50-85%), specificity (95.2-100% versus 76.2-95.2%), and positive (95-100% versus 71-94.4%) and negative predictive value (91.3-95.5% versus 87-63%). Hemosiderin deposition was associated with osteochondral changes, synovial thickening, clinical score, and the total number of ankle bleeds, while it was inversely related with the time elapsed between the last joint bleed and MRI. (<i>p</i> < 0.05). The application of an mGRE sequence significantly improved hemosiderin detection, even when performed by the less experienced reader. The common femoral artery (CFA) is the main access vessel for EVAR, with both surgical exposure and percutaneous access being utilized. However, in emergent cases, percutaneous access can be challenging and may result in complications such as bleeding or dissection thrombosis, leading to the need for surgical conversion. This study aimed to share experiences in implementing a decision-making algorithm to reduce surgical conversions due to percutaneous access failures. A total of 74 aortic patients treated with EVAR in emergency settings were included in this retrospective study. This study focused on various outcomes such as perioperative mortality, morbidity, procedure time, surgical exposure time, and surgical conversion rate. After the implementation of the decision-making algorithm, decreases in surgical conversions and operating time were observed. Percutaneous access was found to be more challenging in cases with specific anatomical characteristics of the CFA, such as severe atherosclerosis or smaller vessel diameter. This study highlighted the importance of carefully assessing patient anatomical features and utilizing a decision-making algorithm to optimize outcomes in EVAR procedures.
