The female hunts nymphs or adults of plant bugs Lygus rugulipennis Poppius, 1911 and L. pratensis (Linnaeus, 1758), depositing up to 10 individuals per cell, depending on their size. Nests are built in a wide variety of sandy habitats, on dirt roads, and in wastelands. The nest consists of a 10–12 cm long main burrow and one to three cells. Males are usually found on flowers of wild carrots Achillea millefolium, Daucus carota, Peucedanum oreoselinum, Pimpinella sp. and Tanacetum vulgare. The nest kleptoparasite Metopia argyrocephala was recorded in nests of this species. Nansen resulted in the discovery of a large number of benthic invertebrates, including peracarid crustaceans. A preliminary investigation demonstrated a high diversity of the Cumacea, with 95% of the species being new to science. The most species-rich genus was Eocuma with seven species; six of them proved new to science and are described here. In this study, we examined the effects of starvation of Waldeckia obesa and Glyptonotus antarcticus on the excretion of both N and P, and the chemical composition of their bodies. N-NH4 + dominated in the pool of excreted nitrogen (93% and 77% of inorganic nitrogen, and 76% and 67% of total nitrogen, for W. obesa and G. antarcticus, respectively). Reactive phosphorus dominated in the pool of excreted phosphorus (72% and 65% of total phosphorus for G. antarcticus and W. obesa, respectively). The excretion of N-NH4 + (in µmol N h−1 100 g−1) dropped from 3,687 (W. obesa) and 1,336 (G. antarcticus) in the first day to about 0.6 after 10 days of starvation (for both species). Phosphorus excretion was generally lower than that of nitrogen (on average 0.046 and 0.017 µmol P h−1 100 g−1 for G. antarcticus and W. obesa, respectively), but no clear trend appeared with N as a result of starvation. The greatest decrease in nitrogen and protein content in W. obesa was recorded on the 3rd day of starvation (nitrogen: from 1.30% to 0.93%; protein: 8.15% to 5.80%) and in G. antarcticus on the 5th day of starvation (nitrogen: from 2.22% to 1.43%; protein: from 13.86% to 8.94%). Conclusions: (i) nitrogen and phosphorus compounds released by crustaceans may be a supplementary source of biogenic salts for autotrophs, (ii) nitrates constituting approx. 20% nitrogen may be used by phytoplankton in the period of new production, (iii) starvation reduces the excretion of N and P and the content of nitrogen and protein in crustaceans.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45279299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is crucial to assess the effects of seasonality on mosquito populations circulating in this domain. We evaluated the influence of seasonal variation on the oviposition activity of epidemiologically important mosquito populations in an Environmental Protection Area in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mosquito eggs were collected using ovitraps for 1 year. During the sampling period, 1,086 eggs were collected. Of these, 39 (3.6%) did not hatch, and 1,047 (96.4%) reached the adult stage. Aedes albopictus (44.8%), Ae. terrens (6.4%), and Haemagogus leucocelaenus (48.8%) eggs and adults were identified. The changes in this community over the seasons were also analyzed. Season influence on the collections was significant. The highest numbers of collected eggs were collected in the summer and autumn, with Hg. leucocelaenus dominant in the summer and Ae. albopictus in the autumn. These two seasons were more similar to each other in terms of the composition of the collected mosquito community, forming a separate cluster from winter and spring groups. Summer, autumn, and winter presented values of Dominance (D), Shannon Diversity (H), and Evenness (J) closer to each other than spring. Climatic factors recorded throughout the collection period were not associated with egg abundance, except for temperature, which was positively correlated with Ae. albopictus presence. Finally, seasonality seemed to influence the oviposition activity of the three species recorded. Summer and autumn were the most critical seasons due to Ae. albopictus and Hg. leucocelaenus circulation. These findings should be considered in prophylaxis and implementation of entomological control strategies in the study area.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45033152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although avian phylogeography has been extensively investigated within the Western Palearctic, several families, such as shrikes, still display unresolved or neglected biogeographic patterns both between and within species, thus requiring further investigations. The Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator) is a long-distance migratory species that exhibits three morphologically well-recognizable subspecies, whose boundaries have never been phylogenetically investigated. Here, we aimed to define the phylogeographic structure of Lanius senator throughout its breeding range and assess the genetic coherence with respect to the phenotypically described subspecies. We assembled a collection of 34 samples mainly from breeding populations of each subspecies and analysed them using four mtDNA and two nuDNA markers. We did not find clear phylogenetic structure in nuclear Ornithine Decarboxylase (ODC) and Myoglobin intron 2 (MYO), but all the four mtDNA loci (i.e., ND2, COI, cytb and CR) highlighted two main haplogroups: one including both the nominate subspecies L. s. senator and L. s. badius and a second one consisting of L. s. niloticus (the easternmost part of its range). Surprisingly, individuals phenotypically assigned to L. s. niloticus from Israel were genetically assigned to the senator/badius haplogroup. Moreover, genetic distances between haplogroups showed intermediate values between inter-intraspecies diversity usually reported for Passerines. We estimated a divergence time at ca. 890 kya (554–1.259 kya HPD). Our findings showed a mismatch in subspecies assignment using morphology and genetic information and a marked differentiation between the eastern L. s. niloticus and all other L. senator populations sampled.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41627761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One such organism might be sponges, primitive, tissueless animals whose evolution over 600 million years has allowed them to become highly specialized. An example of such an organism is the freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris L., an organism that filters water. This study aimed to investigate the 3D structure of the aforementioned sponge using a broad spectrum of techniques such as Microcomputed Tomography (µCT), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM), and Light Microscopy. Additionally, these techniques have been used to correlate sponge architecture with mechanical properties using the concept of tensegrity, i.e., the feature of architectural structures that self-stabilize by balancing multidirectional, often opposing, tensile and compressive forces. A more detailed look at the structure of the sponge skeleton reveals that it is based on two elements: rigid siliceous spicules, chitin in in fibres with cementing collagen-type spongin material. The coexistence of these elements in the sponge structure determines the mechanical properties and, consequently, the sponge skeleton’s postulated tensegrity. Our observations indicate that the integrity of loose megascleres is realized by sponging material surrounding the bundles of spicules. Our distinction of skeletal elements was determined by the number of spicules in the bundle, the direction of spicule position relative to the main body axis, and the way the elements were connected. The arrangement of the bundles described above has important implications for the mechanical properties of the sponge skeleton and, consequently, for the tensegrity hypothesis.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42271352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the breeding season of 2020, several factors, such as a prolonged drought period, a relatively warm winter with no snow cover, and a cold spring (the coldest May in Poland since 1991) affected many bird populations in Poland. The great tit Parus major tended to produce much smaller clutches, much fewer fledglings, and had very low breeding success, increasing with the progress of the breeding season in 2020, in contrast to the more typical breeding season characterised by average weather parameters in 2018. In light of the results obtained, we agree with the view that the phenotypic plasticity of the breeding parameters of the studied birds, such as phenology, may be insufficient to adjust to the upcoming extreme weather events. Additionally, further examining of the impact of extreme weather events on the breeding biology of animals is an important goal for future studies.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43164821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
