These setae are commonly recognized as contaminants of stored products and work and living environments. Exposure to hastisetae through direct contact, ingestion, and inhalation causes inflammation symptoms in human. For these setae, beyond the biomechanical defensive action, a possible secretory function has been recently hypothesized. Through an ultrastructural study of the insertion of hastisetae of Trogoderma granarium, performed integrating histology, SEM, and ion milling, the present paper reconsiders hastisetae morphological categorization and function. The results demonstrate, contrary to previous hypotheses, that hastisetae are not capable of any secretory activity and how these bristles cannot be considered as “true setae”. The existence of a fully developed sensorial apparatus indicates that hastisetae belong to a unique type of highly modified mechanoreceptors.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45162544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the availability of water, and its use by birds in modern anthropogenic habitats, is far from understood, especially outside arid regions. Here, we analyze a large nationwide dataset collected in the temperate zone and present an overview of small water resources used by birds in urban and rural habitats in Poland. We investigated the proportion of birds using free-standing water, preferences for various water sources, and factors and threats influencing drinking and bathing behaviour. Birds using water resources are represented by various taxonomic and ecological groups. Species composition differed slightly due to environmental conditions in the vicinity of the water resource and the background species composition. In total 51 species were observed using water, representing 64% of the 80 species recorded in the vicinity. The probability of water usage was positively related to temperature, which further emphasizes the importance of water under future climate-warming scenarios. We show that small water resources, including those provided by people, were less likely to be used by birds than resources resembling natural waters (puddles, ponds, fountains). This novel finding may have particular importance for avian conservation planning, including appropriate behaviour for nature lovers (providing water sources and reducing stress to birds due to predation risk). Finally, we assessed potential threats to bathing and drinking birds, such as moving cars, risk of drowning, and the presence of predators. Any kind of surface water is currently beneficial for wild birds inhabiting human modified landscapes. During heatwaves and droughts access to water can be crucial for many birds. Unfortunately, such extreme events are predicted to become more frequent and more severe under climate change. Therefore, we would encourage further research in the use by birds of free-standing water, similar to the many studies of birdfeeders in winter, and to consider the maintenance of diverse sources of accessible water in environmental management.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43674119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of our study was to describe how the daily activity pattern of roe deer (i.e. proportion of day- and night-time observations) changed in response to visitor frequency in urban forests of Warsaw in four periods of 2020 (the year the COVID-19 pandemic was announced) compared to the same periods in 2019 (control year). In total, 662 observations of roe deer were recorded by camera traps in both years. The frequency of roe deer observations in urban forests of Warsaw in day- and night-time did not differ between March 2019 and 2020 (period before lockdown, no changes in the number of visitors). Next, between 1 and 20 April 2020 (national lockdown; urban forests were closed for public) the activity of roe deer increased during the day-time. Between 21 April and 30 June in both 2019 and 2020 the frequency of roe deer observations in day and night-time did not differ (green areas were reopened, remote learning). Finally, in July–August 2020 (summer holidays, tourist traffic in forests elevated all day round) the activity of roe deer visibly increased during the night-time. Our research shows how their activity rapidly shifted toward day-time when forests were closed for visitors, and toward night-time when the number of visitors was higher in urban forests after the lockdown. To summarize, roe deer in urban forests showed high ecological plasticity to human presence and rapidly adjusted to changes in the number of visitors in urban forest during the COVID-19 pandemic.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47131419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discovery of a new congener, C. volodymyri Martynov, Godunko and Palatov, sp. nov., is therefore remarkable; the new species is described based on larvae collected in Georgia, Turkey and Iran in 2012–2019. This new species can be distinguished by the structure of the cuticle with flattened, stretched shallow, triangular and semilunar-shaped corrugations; scales and their bases densely scattered on body surface; features of the mouth parts, including the presence of an expanded laterally labrum, in combination with segment III of maxillary palp and superlinguae of hypopharynx rounded apically, without any pointed projections at the tip; numerous small teeth scattered proximally in two rows along inner margin of the pretarsal claw; the shape of denticulation along the posterior margin of the abdominal terga, and the number of prominent posterolateral spines on tergum VII; and the shape of gills II–VII, with a distinctly concave posterior margin. Together with a morphological description, data on the distribution and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) barcode sequences of the species are provided. The species delimitation of C. volodymyri Martynov, Godunko and Palatov, sp. nov. and C. luteolum is tested using COI barcode sequences. The data obtained show that the new species can be distinctly recognised as a separate lineage. The habitat preferences associated with the different parts of the area of C. volodymyri Martynov, Godunko and Palatov, sp. nov. are described and compared. Distribution of C. volodymyri Martynov, Godunko and Palatov, sp. nov. confirms the connections between Caucasian and Asian fauna of Ephemeroptera, as already demonstrated in various families and genera. Short notes on the distribution of mayfly species common to the Caucasus, north-western Iran and Central Asia are presented. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:1D2B7557-0DEC-4ACD-8CA3-A6B50FCC4A51.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60140535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, these environments are exposed to multiple stressors and can be easily altered by human trampling. In particular, specific studies on rock pool heterobranchs communities are lacking for the Mediterranean Sea. In this study, the community of Heterobranchia (Mollusca: Gastropoda) living in an anthropized rock pools system in western Adriatic (Ancona, Italy) has been investigated and a first checklist of the sea slugs in this urbanized areas is provided. During the four months survey, a total of 452 specimens, belonging to 19 species and 12 families was recorded. Notable findings were the first record of Placida dendritica for the Conero Riviera, and the first records of Doto cervicenigra and Ercolania viridis for the western Adriatic Sea. Identification of trophic categories showed a diversified assemblage in terms of food sources mirroring a surprising species diversity. Moreover, we provide here the description of a peculiar behavior possibly used by sea slugs to cope with the stressful conditions within this semi-closed system.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46218143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To date, Poland represents the most north-eastward distribution area in Europe, where the species occurs in ecosystems with natural water temperature regimes. The ecological plasticity of P. virginalis and its obligate parthenogenetic reproduction make this crayfish an exceptional invader. The crayfish may have detrimental effects on the native invertebrates, amphibians, and fish, and alter the state of the entire ecosystem. Therefore, we investigated the presence of the species in the nature reserve of Pojezierze Łęczyńskie Landscape Park after a suspected P. virginalis individual was found by a local citizen. The nature reserve also includes an area designated to protect native amphibians and turtles. Our study revealed the presence of a thriving population of P. virginalis in the protected area and clear indications of its impact on native and invasive species, both in aquatic and terrestrial environments. If no action is taken, the species will likely expand to other water bodies across the country. An extensive sensibilization campaign allowed us to find additional invaded areas and significantly contribute to the effective ban of this and other invasive crayfish species from private and commercial online trade. Raising public awareness and banning invasive crayfish species trade is essential for successfully detecting and preventing further introductions.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44559803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main aim of the research was to determine the changes in the number and species composition of amphibian communities in small water bodies of two Olsztyn (NE Poland) settlements in the period between 1997 and 2015. The examined settlements are characterized by a high concentration of small water bodies and different degrees of urbanization. A decrease in the diversity index of reproducing amphibian communities was found between the years 1997 and 2015 at both settlements. Over the period of 18 years, one species – the northern crested newt – disappeared from both settlements, and another – the fire-bellied toad – disappeared from one of the two settlements. We demonstrate a significant relationship between the probability of occupancy of a water reservoir by fire-bellied toad, common frog, edible frog, and pool frog and the degree of isolation of these water reservoirs. Moreover, a decrease in the average number of species in a single water body and in the average values of diversity was also observed. The diversity of amphibian communities in water reservoirs depended mainly on the distance to the nearest water reservoir, the nearest building and the area of vegetation in the water reservoir. Available data suggests that the newly created water reservoirs play a positive role in the protection of amphibians in urban spaces, but the restoration of local amphibian communities is related to the degree of urbanization, and mostly applies to generalist species.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46410494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study aims at exploring whether the influence of different substrates (limestone vs granite) could drive the occurrence of different vagile groups (crustacean decapods, echinoderms and fishes). The study was carried out at the “Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo” Marine Protected Area (NE Sardinia, Mediterranean Sea) where substrates of different lithology, namely granites and limestones, occur on a local spatial scale. The diversity and the abundance of 16 vagile species (four crustaceans, seven echinoderms and five fishes) were investigated by the analysis of photographs (2352 images) collected in 20 sites (10 limestones and 10 granites), between 30 and 50 m depth. Statistical analyses showed a clear-cut separation between the assemblages assessed on the two lithological substrate types, with assemblages on granites that were tightly grouped and those on limestones more dispersed. The total species richness did not significantly vary between limestones and granites. Galathea strigosa and Marthasterias glacialis were exclusively recorded on granites, while Palinurus elephas, Scyllarides latus, Arbacia lixula, Ophidiaster ophidianus and Serranus scriba were exclusively found on limestones. The observed patterns could be partially explained by multiple factors related to lithology: i) the different availability of preferred food sources, potentially influenced by substrate type; ii) the site geomorphology, that could provide different dens and refuges (in terms of quantity and types of shelters) suitable for different species; iii) the colour of different substrates enhancing the mimicry of different species according to their livery and camouflage ability. Our and literature data suggest that the substrate type in rocky reefs could interact with other environmental factors (i.e., light intensity related to depth) in shaping the structure of rocky-reef assemblages.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43728982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tendency of Pb and Cd accumulation in the tissues of A. testudineus was as follows: gill >> liver > muscle for Pb and liver >> gill > muscle for Cd. Endocrine stress response was characterized by varying the levels of cortisol and glucose plasma. Exposure to both Pb and Cd caused significantly increase levels of plasma cortisol (p < 0.05), while blood glucose levels slightly increased at the beginning and then decreased sharply. Based on the erratic changes in levels of plasma cortisol and blood glucose, it can be concluded that exposure to high concentrations of Pb and Cd does not cause death; however, it adversely affects the interrenal and pancreatic activities of A. testudineus. The distribution of Mytilus mussels is influenced by a number of benthic and pelagic environmental variables (e.g., substratum type and availability, water movement, phytoplankton production, physical disturbance) as well as interactions between these variables. Because of its broad tolerance of environmental variation the Mediterranean species, Mytilus galloprovincialis, has the greatest ability of all blue mussels to colonise new geographic regions. Understanding how population genetic variation is related to, or caused by, environmental variation is important but has long been a challenge. The present study examined the genetic differentiation of native populations of M. galloprovincialis throughout its entire geographic range in the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov using 53 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP loci). Mussels, in total 1004 individuals collected from 36 locations, were genotyped and combined with existing SNP data for mussels from 11 reference sites. Pairwise comparisons of F ST values, correspondence analysis (CA) and STRUCTURE analysis all revealed four groups of populations: the Atlantic Ocean; the western Mediterranean; the Aegean Sea; and the Azov, Black and Marmara Seas. One population – from Algeria (Oran West) – was intermediate between the two main groups of the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Seascape genetic analyses using GLM and DistLM analyses were employed to test site-specific genetic variation as a function of 13 environmental variables. The GLM identified five environmental variables that explained variation in site-specific F ST values, whilst in the DistLM best-fit model only four were significant. These analyses suggest that a complex mix of environmental variables contribute to explaining genetic variation of M. galloprovincialis populations within the Mediterranean Sea, which most likely reflects the complex geological history of formation, isolation and reconnection among the regional sub-basins of the Sea.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2022-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44774743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
