One way to address this disconnection is to locate the intersection between secular and religious feminisms in the space of fiction. While mytho-fiction about the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, has been around for quite some time and has been extensively analysed for its critique of religion and diversity of representation of heroines, the feminist hermeneutic of reconstruction is only now witnessing a resurgence in Buddhism. This article focuses on Buddhist Studies scholar Vanessa R Sasson’s debut novel Yasodhara and the Buddha for its blending of feminist consciousness with the Buddhist ethos of love. It is hoped that this exercise will be found meaningful in understanding women’s experiences of and attitudes towards religion.","PeriodicalId":55945,"journal":{"name":"Feminist Theology","volume":"31 1","pages":"353 - 365"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44029486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This exposition unfolds in two parts. First, I argue that Ruether’s considerable corpus of published works provides a model through which theological categories can be honed as theoretical analytics for historical critique, especially for thinking about colonialism and empire. There is essential work that theology and theologians can do in interrogating the past, especially the Catholic past and its imbrication with extractive global political economies. Theology, in its finest form, is fundamentally a critical and analytical project, as Ruether demonstrates. The second part refers to Ruether’s expansive articulation of sacrament and sacramentality, a lens through which scholars of religion can better approximate and interpret the religious experience and practice of women, and Catholic laywomen in particular. I apply these analytics to consider the history of Catholicism in Mexico.","PeriodicalId":55945,"journal":{"name":"Feminist Theology","volume":"31 1","pages":"314 - 323"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46606984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analyzing legal documents, content of laws, and newspapers, we juxtapose these two laws that have followed different applications within the same socio-legal context and historical time, legal reasoning, and juridical structure to identify a common thread: the control of women's bodies and devaluation of women's lives enshrined in the legal system. \"Familyism\" ideology embedded in the law prioritizes family over women's rights where social class emerges as a central factor. The analysis centers the state, as it interacts with and responds to pressures from the international community and domestic political forces to create, align, and implement antiabortion and VAW laws while devaluing gender ideologies that seek to protect women. In sum, both laws prioritize family at the expense of women's rights and lives, especially poor and socially disadvantaged women.</p>","PeriodicalId":55945,"journal":{"name":"Feminist Theology","volume":"9 1","pages":"115-139"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11178330/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87381510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The early Christian tradition of Holy Spirit as female and mother, her womb the font of new birth (Jn 3.3-5), helps illuminate why women may have been seen as the midwives, or ministers, of this birthing ritual. Likewise, the identification of the font as a womb adds to Jocelyn Toynbee’s 1964 proposal that a scene on the Walesby Tank, a fourth-century Romano-British baptismal font, portrayed two clothed women assisting a nude female neophyte at her baptism.","PeriodicalId":55945,"journal":{"name":"Feminist Theology","volume":"31 1","pages":"143 - 164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46838961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to some current theological responses to mental illness, fully intersectional responses recognize not only gender, race, and class but also religion as a factor in some mental illness experience. A panentheistic theological response begins with a relational ontology, understands bodily diversities as part of finitude, and affirms the already-beloved identity of persons living with mental illness. This starting point of original blessing rather than original sin dismantles stigma rather than obscuring it through associating mental illness with the Fall. A theology of Spirit as that which opens to and empowers possibilities within repeated losses and turmoil responds to mental illness without minimizing suffering.","PeriodicalId":55945,"journal":{"name":"Feminist Theology","volume":"31 1","pages":"181 - 196"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46011215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
