Aim: Current paper investigates the influence of this parameter on the perioperative course of patients submitted to surgery for advanced stage ovarian cancer. Material and methods: between 2016-2018 there were 34 patients diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer who were submitted to surgery with curative intent and in whom this parameter was evaluated. Results: a low rate of this parameter seemed to be significantly associated with a more advanced stage at diagnostic (p=0,002), with higher risk of the presence of lymph node metastases (p=0,003), with larger residual tumor (p=0,002). Meanwhile, patients with a lower lymphocyte to monocyte ratio usually had a higher level of CA 125, but this fact did not have statistical significance (p=0,87). Conclusions: patients with a lower lymphocyte to monocyte rate are expected to present more aggressive ovarian tumors and therefore a personalized therapeutic strategy might be needed.","PeriodicalId":55841,"journal":{"name":"Practica Medicala","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41893092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Circulating platelets play an essential role in the immune system and furthermore in tumor development and proliferation. Therefore, the correlation between different neoplasia and the number of platelets has been widely studied. The aim of the current paper is to investigate the correlation ship between platelet number and tumoral endometrial transformation. Material and methods. Between January 2022 and June 2022 22 patients with endometrial hyperplasia or endometrial cancer were submitted to surgery. The serum levels of platelets were determined and compared to those reported in a similar group of patients in whom the endometrial lining was normal. Results. Patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer presented a significantly higher number of platelets as well as a significantly higher platelet volume when compared to patients diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia and respectively to those in whom a normal endometrial lining was found. Conclusions. The serum number of platelets and their volume seem to be positively correlated with the aggressivity of the tumoral transformation of the endometrial lining and should be therefore considered as part of the elements which should be analyzed when discussing the best therapeutic option in such patients.","PeriodicalId":55841,"journal":{"name":"Practica Medicala","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44497106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fear of cancer progression (FoP) is one of patients’ greatest concerns and one of the most reported unmet needs. Higher levels of FoP can negatively impact a patient’s quality of life, impairing physical, emotional, social and functional well-being. The Romanian health-care system has difficulties in offering qualitative psychosocial assistance for cancer outpatients. Due to their specific implications, the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions might further affect FoP, therefore our objective was to investigate correlates of FoP in cancer outpatients during the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania. Material and methods. The study investigated correlates of FoP in 330 Romanian cancer outpatients assessed during 2021. T-tests, Multivariate General Linear Models and Hierarchical Regression Models were conducted in order to assess the relationship between variables. Outcomes. Results showed differences in the assessed variables depending on gender (women had scores significantly higher than men regarding FoP and illness intrusiveness) and marital status. Moreover, using a hierarchical regression model, we identified three statistically significant predictors of FoP: gender, illness intrusiveness regarding relationships and anxiety, together explaining 38.2% of the variance in global FoP scores. Anxiety was the most important predictor of FoP, explaining 21.3% of the variance in the FoP scores, 5 times more than gender and almost 2 times more than illness intrusiveness in interpersonal relationships. Conclusions. Cancer is a complex experience, impacted by both socio-demographic variables such as gender and marital status, as well as psychological variables such as anxiety and fear of disease progression. Individualized psychosocial-care should be recognized as essential, and personalized interventions should be integrated into the patient's treatment plan.","PeriodicalId":55841,"journal":{"name":"Practica Medicala","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46687755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Maternal alloantibodies are generated following the contact of maternal immune system with paternally acquired antigens on the fetal human platelets (PLTs). HPA-1a alloantibodies are responsible for more than 80% of cases of FNAIT. Low prevalence of FNAIT that occurs in less than 1 case out of 1000 births, and even a lower risk for intracranial hemorrhage makes a controversial discussion whether a screening in pregnant patients would bring benefits. Concerning pathogenesis of FNAIT, it has been shown that fetal platelets caring HPA-1a antigen enters maternal circulation and produce an immune response, that leads to production of HPA-1a maternal antibodies that afterwards can pass the placenta causing fetal thrombocytopenia. The majority of mothers who gave birth to a newborn with FNAIT usually are asymptomatic, although they might have a previous affected pregnancy. Although management of pregnancies complicated by FNAIT is still in discuss and controversial, a systemic review studies in 2017 showed that best guidance and delivery for pregnancies that are at risk for FNAIT is a weekly maternal administration of intravenous immunoglobulin, adding glucocorticoids depending on severity of FNAIT.","PeriodicalId":55841,"journal":{"name":"Practica Medicala","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48869939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The onset of depression is usually in young people and affects women more than men. The frequency of depression increases significantly with age. We can consider that anxiety is a close link between the functions of biology and philosophy, the body and the mind, the sense of conservation and healthy thinking, and personality and education.
