Using an output distance function and its duality with the revenue function, we estimated the technical efficiency of sugarcane production in Brazilian municipalities and the shadow price of reducing carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) emissions from the production of this crop. The main result was an overall technical efficiency average of 81%, which indicates that if producers adopt better management practices, the sugarcane production could be expanded by 19% with a contraction by the same magnitude in CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. We also estimated a mean shadow price of R$9.18 per ton of carbon dioxide, with the highest estimated values in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Mato Grosso, and Bahia. However, in the state of São Paulo, the most representative national producer, the estimated shadow price is R$6.34 per ton of carbon dioxide. In this sense, public policies, especially through public financing and public technical assistance, could potentially mitigate the producers' losses in the short run since pollution decline usually requires more mechanization.</p>\u0000 </div>","PeriodicalId":55544,"journal":{"name":"Agribusiness","volume":"41 4","pages":"956-968"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145366270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their transition to sustainable agricultural production is critical in the face of the environmental challenges posed by conventional farming practices and is a key pathway to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. This study examines the effects of Sustainable Agricultural Practices (SAP) adoption on coffee production and technical efficiency (TE) among smallholders in Peru, focusing on both observable and unobservable factors. Using a multistage framework, we employ propensity score matching to control for observable factors, estimate a Stochastic Production Frontier model with sample selection bias correction to control for unobservable factors, and assess technological differences using a metafrontier approach. Our analysis of pooled cross-sectional data from 2017 to 2019 indicates that age, farm accessibility, and having Quechua as a first language are factors that make farmers more likely to adopt SAP. Although SAP adopters initially show higher production levels, the difference is not statistically significant after accounting for unobserved factors. However, SAP adopters utilize better technology and exhibit higher TE compared to non-adopters, highlighting the potential benefits of promoting sustainable practices in smallholder agriculture.</p>","PeriodicalId":55544,"journal":{"name":"Agribusiness","volume":"41 4","pages":"936-955"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/agr.22005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145366465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Agricultural commodities are primarily developed within specialized exporters or multinational enterprises and exported to several different countries. In Chile, the fruit sector accounts for almost half of total exports. Internationally oriented companies explore business opportunities in foreign markets and invest adequate resources in international operations. In addition, more internationally oriented companies could be more inclined to invest in green practices due to external pressures and, consequently, achieve higher environmental performance. In this context, environmental performance is related to the extent to which available natural resources are protected during the production, delivery, and consumption of agricultural products. To the best of our knowledge, there is scattered evidence of the relationship between international orientation and the environmental performance of agri-food companies, especially in Latin America. Grounded on the natural resources-based view theory, this study assessed the effects of environmental collaboration on five dimensions of environmental performance (greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, food loss and waste, food quality and safety, and water footprint management) in agri-food companies with a survey with Chilean firms. Data were analyzed using the partial least square—structural equation modeling. We found that international orientation positively influences all five dimensions of environmental performance. Our study identified that the dimension most impacted by international orientation is water footprint management, and the least impacted is food quality and safety. With the aid of multi-group analysis, we concluded that there are no significant differences in these relationships between micro/small and medium/large companies. A significant difference was observed in food loss and waste between fruit and nonfruit producers. We expect the outcomes of this study will support exporting-related decisions and public policies in Latin America.</p>\u0000 </div>","PeriodicalId":55544,"journal":{"name":"Agribusiness","volume":"41 4","pages":"992-1009"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145366931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This box‐like feature, located on the top‐right corner of product pages, prominently displays a single seller at a given time. Using a choice model and a panel dataset of over 290,000 unique grocery products from five countries, our study investigates the key factors that influence BuyBox assignments. We found that winning the BuyBox is primarily determined by competitive pricing—being the lowest‐price seller for a 180‐day period significantly improves the chances of a BuyBox assignment. Furthermore, maintaining low current product prices, low sales ranks, and minimal out‐of‐stock percentages are crucial in becoming a BuyBox seller. These findings affect Amazon and its extensive network of over 2 million third‐party sellers, who navigate the increasingly competitive and dynamic E‐commerce landscape.","PeriodicalId":55544,"journal":{"name":"Agribusiness","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142269928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The findings indicate: (1) Suppliers elevate prices by 26.77% above the benchmark, while demanders reduce them by 24.36%, culminating in a market price that surpasses the benchmark. (2) Labor outflow and aging populations drive suppliers to further increase market prices. (3) Variations in individual characteristics underpin the disparity in bargaining power between suppliers and demanders. The study underscores the disadvantaged and heterogeneous nature of farmers (demanders), advocating for a recalibration of subsidy distribution to benefit farmers directly, rather than agricultural production service organizations, and the establishment of differentiated subsidy systems.","PeriodicalId":55544,"journal":{"name":"Agribusiness","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142260167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a panel from 2014 to 2021 (1117 observations of 383 dairy farms) we compare the technical efficiency of more recently adopted Compost‐bedded Pack Barns (CPB) with that of Semi‐confinement (SC), and Unstructured confinement (UNS) systems. A stochastic frontier was estimated by a Generalized True Random Effects to assess the relationship between technical efficiency and the production systems adopted, decompose efficiency into Transient (short‐term) and Persistent (long‐term) components, and control for unobserved heterogeneity. We found that farms using confined systems are more efficient than those using semi‐confined systems. The decomposition of the Overall Technical Efficiency in its Persistent and Transient components suggests that farmers can be more efficient when dealing with short‐term shocks than when deciding which system to use. The use of more capital‐intensive technologies such as CPB may provide opportunities to improve dairy farm profitability and productivity growth in Brazil.","PeriodicalId":55544,"journal":{"name":"Agribusiness","volume":"118 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142260168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"经济学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, the analyses faced challenges due to the absence of concurrent sale and rent data for the same land, potentially leading to biased results. This research avoids this problem by utilizing a unique dataset from Eastern Germany, encompassing auction data from 2016 to 2019. This dataset is distinctive, containing both the purchase and lease price offers by individual farmers for the same agricultural land at a single point. Thus, this study overcomes the conventional limitations of using aggregated or non‐contemporaneous data. Hence, the focal point is to unravel the intricate relationship between individual rent price ratios and a myriad of influencing factors, including land characteristics and local farming structures. The use of Generalized Additive Models for Location, Shape, and Scale provides a robust framework for this analysis, offering a nuanced understanding of the distributional properties of individual rent price ratios. The study provides robust empirical evidence that highlights the need for adaptive and region‐specific policies if policy makers insist on intervening in the agricultural land market. Furthermore, promising points of departure for future research are identified.
