Following the clinical encounter, the students and teacher discuss the case and students' consultation skills. This is of particular value in teaching paediatrics to medical students, for whom paediatrics is an unfamiliar environment, and the approach to consultation is very different to usual adult practice. Junior doctors are often tasked with teaching medical students, either in structured bedside teaching sessions during formal teaching roles, or in ad hoc sessions with students shadowing on clinical placements. As paediatrics may be unfamiliar to the junior doctors themselves, offering teaching to medical students may cause some anxiety in their own ability and knowledge. This article provides doctors in paediatrics with an insight into the evidence base underlying paediatric bedside teaching, including model structures for bedside teaching and debriefing after the session, with the aims of improving their confidence in undertaking these sessions and improving their learners' and their own yield of learning.</p>","PeriodicalId":55471,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Disease in Childhood-Education and Practice Edition","volume":" ","pages":"40-43"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141535997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Feeling a sense of belonging is a significant challenge for medical students within the melee of modern clinical environments. Co-creation is a learning relationship in which students are actively involved in the education process. It is inherently relational and promotes belonging within higher education environments. Little is known about using co-creation in the clinical learning environment, within medical education, or how medical students experience this type of learning structure. This article presents an example of using co-creation during paediatric placement and its evaluation. It then gives practical advice for using co-creation within the reader's own practice, as a paediatric clinician and teacher.</p>","PeriodicalId":55471,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Disease in Childhood-Education and Practice Edition","volume":" ","pages":"44-48"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141617724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Between 33% and 50% of the 1.4 million people who attend UK emergency departments (ED) annually with a head injury are children. Patient outcomes in this cohort are strongly associated with rapid identification and treatment of intracranial pathology. The management of pathologies such as expanding intracranial haemorrhage and raised intracranial pressure requires urgent medical and neurosurgical treatment. This is facilitated by rapid interpretation of CT brain images in the ED. In this paper, we discuss the approach to interpretation of a CT brain following a traumatic head injury. While this is not a substitute for a formal radiologist report, being able to identify significant abnormalities may help you, as the treating clinician, to identify and manage any acute life threats; engage and potentiate discussion with your neurosurgical team and expedite the potential transfer and treatment of your patient.</p>","PeriodicalId":55471,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Disease in Childhood-Education and Practice Edition","volume":" ","pages":"30-35"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141421986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Severe haemorrhage is the second-leading cause of death in paediatric trauma, preceded by traumatic brain injury. Major haemorrhage protocols (MHPs), also known as 'code red' and 'massive transfusion protocols', are used to make large volumes of blood products rapidly available. Most recommendations for paediatric MHPs are extrapolated from adult data because of a lack of large, high-quality, prospective paediatric studies. However, applying adult data in a paediatric context requires caution due to differences in injury mechanisms and physiological responses between adults and children. Since major haemorrhage is a high-acuity low-occurrence event, MHP requires effective training, collaboration and communication among a large multidisciplinary team.In this 15-minute consultation, we provide an evidence-based synthesis of the management principles of paediatric major haemorrhage.</p>","PeriodicalId":55471,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Disease in Childhood-Education and Practice Edition","volume":" ","pages":"15-20"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141447665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
