(17 species), Phalacroma F.Stein (12), Metaphalacroma L.S.Tai (1), Pseudophalacroma Jörg. (1), Ornithocercus F.Stein (7), Histioneis F.Stein (11 spp.), Parahistioneis Kof. & Skogsb. (4), Histiophysis (Kof. & Mich.) Kof. & Skogsb. (1), Citharistes F.Stein (2) and Amphisolenia F.Stein (8), from the period 1938–2019. The widespread D. acuminata Clap. & J.Lachm., D. acuta Ehrenb., D. caudata Kent, D. fortii Pavill., and D. tripos Gourret have attracted attention as causative organisms of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning in temperate Australian waters. We discriminate between Dinophysis and Phalacroma. We newly report from Australian waters O. assimilis Jörg., Metaphalacroma skogsbergii L.S.Tai, Parahistioneis pieltainii Osorio-Taffal, Amphisolenia extensa Kof., A. inflata G.Murr. & Whitt. and A. rectangulata Kof. We rediscovered Histiophysis rugosa (Kof. & Mich.) Kof. & Skogsb. here illustrated with two cells from the Coral Sea. The ornate tropical genera Ornithocercus and Histioneis are excellent warm-water indicators, reflecting the southward reach of the East Australian and Leeuwin currents, whereas D. truncata Cleve is a cold-water Subantarctic species.","PeriodicalId":55416,"journal":{"name":"Australian Systematic Botany","volume":"35 1","pages":"469 - 500"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44306757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lobban, E. S. Santos","doi":"10.1071/SB22004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1071/SB22004","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT A prevailing hypothesis of microbial biogeography holds that all species are ubiquitous, but this may lead to fitting Pacific specimens into European taxa on the basis of light microscopy. There is now evidence of regional endemicity in freshwater diatoms in Australia and recent studies have shown large diversity in the Guam marine Licmophora flora. The aim was to compare Australian samples with Guam Licmophora spp., especially their girdle bands. Valves and girdle bands from samples collected from Australia and Micronesia were described from observations made via light and scanning-electron microscopy. Of the nine species present in Australian samples, six were previously undescribed. Species with unusual characters included Licmophora insolita Lobban & Emm.S.Santos sp. nov. with a novel location for the apical rimoportula and a Tharngan strip on the valvocopula; Licmophora ballerina Lobban & S.Blanco sp. nov., with distinctive 3rd and 4th pleurae; and the licmosphenioid Licmophora johnwestii Lobban & Emm.S.Santos sp. nov. Specimens resembling Licmophora debilis (Kütz.) Grunow and L. abbreviata C.Agardh, described from Europe, occurred in Great Barrier Reef samples. The study brings the Guam flora to 20 novel v. 2 matching Atlantic–European taxa. The proportion of new to known species in Australian and Guam samples suggests regional endemicity, at least being broadly different from European Licmophora floras.","PeriodicalId":55416,"journal":{"name":"Australian Systematic Botany","volume":"35 1","pages":"437 - 468"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45389602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These data were analysed utilising principal-component analysis (PCA), phylogenetic networks, phylogeny reconstruction and hybridisation tests. Twelve species that are variously recognised in the complex were sampled from across their ranges, along with co-occurring members of E. section Adnataria, to allow for patterns of hybridisation and gene flow to be identified. Despite the large genetic datasets generated, many relationships within the E. odorata complex were poorly resolved, and few species were monophyletic, likely owing to both biological factors including recent speciation and extensive hybridisation and introgression, and potential over-splitting of taxa. We show that multiple taxa with limited distributions are the result of reticulate evolutionary events and that typical Eucalyptus viridis R.T.Baker and the possibly con-specific E. aenea K.D.Hill are sister to the rest of the complex. The remaining species appeared to represent a discontinuous crescent-shaped cline running from the Flinders Ranges to the south-western slopes region of New South Wales, with limited support for an east–west split in this cline across the Murray River Basin. Eucalytpus viridis var. latiuscula Blakely, which is not closely related to the typical variety of this species in our data, may represent a northern extension to this cline.","PeriodicalId":55416,"journal":{"name":"Australian Systematic Botany","volume":"35 1","pages":"403 - 435"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49418583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This ambiguity is in part due to widespread hybridisation in the genus, but also morphological variability within and among populations. Morphological and molecular analyses of the complex using 24 morphological characters and 59 chloroplast coding and non-coding regions (~50 000 bp) provided support for the separation of C. flaccidum from C. luteolum Traub & L.S.Hannibal ex Traub, with the latter representing populations from the Flinders Ranges and Lake Eyre Basin. Within Crinum flaccidum, there was greater inferred genetic structure at the population level for New South Wales flood plain accessions, compared with South Australian populations from along the Murray River. The greater structure of the South Australian populations is theorised to be attributed to lower seed-dispersal rates leading to lower gene flow.","PeriodicalId":55416,"journal":{"name":"Australian Systematic Botany","volume":"35 1","pages":"395 - 402"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46711536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Myosotis hikuwai Meudt, Prebble & G.M.Rogers is known from one location near Wānaka (Otago), has an unusual erect, spring annual habit, and is most similar to M. brevis and M. glauca, with which it is sympatric. Myosotis venticola Meudt & Prebble comprises plants that were sometimes previously identified as M. cheesemanii from certain ranges in Otago and southern Canterbury, but with retrorse trichomes present on the abaxial and adaxial side of the rosette leaves. Myosotis ultramafica Meudt, Prebble & Rance comprises individuals from ultramafic sites in certain ranges in Southland, and is most similar to M. cheesemanii and M. lyallii. We recommend that all three new species are listed as Threatened under the New Zealand Threat Classification System. In addition to descriptions and illustrations, the three new species are also included in a revised key to the nineteen species of southern hemisphere bracteate–prostrate Myosotis.","PeriodicalId":55416,"journal":{"name":"Australian Systematic Botany","volume":"35 1","pages":"364 - 394"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46842939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
