Within the scope of the Priority Program 2388 “Hundred Plus – Extending the Service Life of Complex Structures through Intelligent Digitalization” (SPP 100+), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), interdisciplinary methods including digital models, digital linkages, and condition indicators, have been investigated and validated on the Nibelungen Bridge in Worms. First, two structural health monitoring systems and their combination are described in detail, with particular focus on the fusion of accelerometer data. Subsequently, innovative data-driven simulation methods are presented to determine the complete temperature field of the bridge superstructure. In addition, various numerical solutions covering different element types and levels of detail are introduced. Finally, methods for managing knowledge about the bridge's condition are presented. The methods were developed relatively independently of each other and validated at the NBW. Eine belastbare Entscheidung zwischen Neubau und Revitalisierung setzt eine möglichst ganzheitliche Zustandserfassung und -bewertung voraus, die technische, ökologische und ökonomische Kriterien integrativ berücksichtigt und in einen langfristigen Planungshorizont einordnet.</p><p>Materialdegradationen und veränderliche Einwirkungen, die aufgrund ihres stochastischen Charakters nur mit zunehmender Unschärfe in die fernere Zukunft prognostiziert werden können, gilt es ebenso zu berücksichtigen wie geometrische und funktionale Anforderungen aus Nutzungsänderungen.</p><p>Angesichts des Zustands zahlreicher Infrastrukturbauwerke ist es erforderlich, Neubau und Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen parallel zu betreiben, um anstehende Aufgaben zeitlich zu entzerren und vorhandene personelle wie materielle Kapazitäten effizient einzusetzen. Lebensdauerverlängernde Maßnahmen leisten durch den Erhalt wesentlicher Teile der bestehenden Struktur einen Beitrag zur Energie- und Ressourcenschonung. Zugleich tragen längere Abschreibungszeiträume der bei der Herstellung entstandenen Emissionen zur Nachhaltigkeit bei.</p><p>Die vorliegende Zeitschriftenausgabe widmet sich aktuellen Entwicklungen in der Zustandserfassung und -bewertung von Stahlbetonkonstruktionen. Die Beiträge decken ein breites Spektrum ab und behandeln sowohl wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse als auch deren Transfer in die praktische Anwendung.</p><p>Vorgestellt werden digitale Methoden des Structural Health Monitoring, der Einsatz laserinduzierter Plasmaspektroskopie in der Bauwerksdiagnostik sowie Planungshilfen zur Beurteilung der Spannungsverteilung instandgesetzter Querschnitte. Reinhard Maurer","doi":"10.1002/best.70064","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/best.70064","url":null,"abstract":"<p><b>Reinforcement joints in transport infrastructure structures with large concrete cover</b></p><p>As part of a cross-border international infrastructure project – the 18 km long underwater tunnel in the Baltic Sea connecting the Danish island of Lolland with the German island of Fehmarn – it was determined that the overlap lengths for reinforcing steel specified in the German National Annex to DIN EN 1992 2/NA are the longest in international comparison. Since the structure is also being built on German territory in accordance with Danish technical regulations, this issue is of considerable importance from a safety, economic and technical implementation perspective. Against this background, experimental investigations were carried out at the Technical University of Dortmund on behalf of the BASt to examine whether the shorter lap lengths specified in EN 1992 2 ensure sufficient load-bearing capacity and crack behaviour within the permissible limits – both under static short-term loading and under continuous load conditions. The aim was to obtain reliable information on the application of the European design approach for transport infrastructure structures and thus create a basis for possible future adjustments to national regulations. In addition to this, project-specific test series with multi-layer reinforcement were initiated by the client Femern A/S. Dirk Schlicke","doi":"10.1002/best.70066","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/best.70066","url":null,"abstract":"<p><b>Structural engineering with holistic 3D models in practise</b></p><p>This article outlines the findings of a systematic survey of structural engineering offices regarding their current practices in structural analysis and design for building construction. As well as assessing the current situation regarding the use of holistic 3D models in everyday planning, it examines the potential for optimisation in terms of using concrete and reinforcement more efficiently. Different modelling methods are applied depending on the planning phase, with holistic 3D models being widely used. The standard procedure involves linear elastic determination of forces for individual load cases on the embedded holistic 3D model, superimposing them to calculate the design forces and performing a nonlinear cross-section design. However, in this process, redistribution effects due to crack formation in the SLS as well as plastic behaviour in the ULS are neglected, and soil-structure interaction is not accounted for in the partial safety factor for additional restraint forces due to settlement, as specified in EN 1990. Material savings could be achieved through mechanically consistent calculation approaches in holistic 3D models. In fact, comparative calculations show that realistic modelling and well-founded design assumptions could result in material savings of around 30% in the foundation slab. To ensure this, it is important to select suitable repair materials in addition to defining an effective repair procedure and ensuring flawless execution. Planners and contractors are supported in this by the specifications of the regulations, which specify the required strength, stiffness or penetration resistance, for example, depending on the material, environmental influences and the properties of the old concrete. However, these specifications do not consider the respective usage and load conditions during and after repair in combination with the specified material characteristics. Current regulations lack information on the influence of prevailing loads and the associated stress distribution in repaired component cross-sections on the resulting degradation effects. The planning aid presented in this article makes it possible to estimate the stress distribution between old concrete and repair material and, based on this, to select a material that considers the component load in the interests of permanent repair. The design and the assessment of bridges is based on the NATO-Standarization Agreement No. 2021 (STANAG 2021) and the Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Roads for Heavy Military Vehicles (RABS). A new edition of STANAG 2021 was published in November 2024. The RABS are currently being revised and partially integrated into the Guidelines for Military Infrastructure and Civil Defense in Road and Civil Engineering (MIZ).
