Esta orquídea es recolectada en grandes cantidades, debido a la belleza de sus flores, por lo que existe el riesgo de una disminución dramática de sus poblaciones naturales. En este estudio se evaluó la frecuencia de colonización de las raíces y la influencia de los factores edad y cercanía con el centro del pseudobulbo de plantas recolectadas en un bosque de pino-encino, en Santa Catarina Estetla, Oaxaca, México. Las raíces se clasificaron por edades, jóvenes, maduras y senescentes, y cada una de ellas se dividió en tres segmentos: proximal, central y distal, respecto a la parte basal central del pseudobulbo. Se evaluaron 1650 cortes transversales, los cuales se montaron en portaobjetos y se tiñeron para su observación con microscopía óptica. Se observó que las raíces de la orquídea establecen micorrizas en sus células corticales. La frecuencia de colonización se registró en los segmentos de raíces maduras y el área distal de las raíces senescentes, con valores superiores a 30 %. En contraste, en el caso de las raíces jóvenes, la colonización micorrízica no superó el 1 %, independientemente del segmento evaluado. Este es el primer reporte que demuestra la colonización micorrízica en L. furfuracea y que la frecuencia de colonización es influenciada por la edad de las raíces y por su cercanía con la parte central del pseudobulbo de las plantas de esta especie.","PeriodicalId":55293,"journal":{"name":"Caldasia","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134949152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, insects belonging to the genus Microvelia have served as valuable model organisms for ecological and behavioural research. Considering this, our study aimed to establish an enhanced laboratory rearing protocol for M. pulchella based on existing methodologies. The protocol encompasses a decision-making flowchart to optimize the rearing process, a standardized method for accurately determining egg and nymph ages, and photographs illustrating all life stages and sexes of the insect. Additionally, we sought to characterize key life history traits of this species. Our detailed rearing procedure involves utilizing different containers tailored to each insect stage and specific requirements. We observed an average development time of 20.6 days from egg to adult at a temperature of 25°C (room temperature). Interestingly, male adults reared in the laboratory exhibited smaller sizes compared to their field-collected counterparts, while females displayed similar sizes across conditions. Female M. pulchella demonstrated an average egg production of 211.77 eggs, with the highest fecundity occurring within the first five weeks. Fertility followed a similar pattern, peaking during this period. In terms of longevity, females exhibited an average survival time of 74 days, whereas males lived for approximately 91 days. M. pulchella proves to be a convenient model organism for conducting non-invasive experiments, given the multitude of informative traits that can be measured. Additionally, the rearing procedure is cost-effective, straightforward, and requires minimal space.","PeriodicalId":55293,"journal":{"name":"Caldasia","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135314517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, research on the family in Colombia is limited. Based on a comprehensive literature review, a list of tenebrionid species known from the country was compiled and the state of knowledge is analyzed. Based on this information, the Tenebrionidae in Colombia are represented by 326 species, organized into 95 genera (seven subgenera), 30 tribes, and nine subfamilies. Cundinamarca, including Bogotá, presents the highest number of recorded species with 52, followed by Valle del Cauca with sixteen, and Bolívar with thirteen; eight departments have records for only a single species, and ten do not have records of any tenebrionid species. Potential reasons for the historically limited research on Colombian tenebrionids are discussed and actions to reduce these knowledge gaps are proposed.","PeriodicalId":55293,"journal":{"name":"Caldasia","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139363005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este estudio evaluó los patrones fenológicos de esta especie, su relación con el fotoperiodo y la precipitación, y la fecundidad de los árboles en una población silvestre del municipio de Medina (Cundinamarca) y en cercas vivas asociadas a sistemas silvopastoriles en Cubarral (Meta) y El Cerrito (Valle del Cauca). En cada localidad se hicieron visitas quincenales y mensuales para la observación de las fases fenológicas y la estimación del tamaño de las cosechas de flores y frutos. Este estudio reveló que Mimosa trianae tiene un patrón anual de reproducción, con un evento reproductivo que se extiende desde septiembre hasta abril, caracterizado por un alto nivel de sincronía entre individuos. Los árboles de El Cerrito tuvieron la mayor fecundidad. En las tres localidades, la iniciación de la floración coincidió con el descenso en el fotoperíodo que ocurre después del equinoccio de otoño. Aunque la precipitación coincidió con la floración en el Valle del Cauca, no se observó una relación consistente entre las lluvias y el inicio del período reproductivo. Los resultados de este estudio contribuyen al conocimiento ecológico de esta especie y brindan información para la cosecha de semillas para procesos de restauración ecológica y sistemas agroforestales y silvopastoriles.","PeriodicalId":55293,"journal":{"name":"Caldasia","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We recorded 272 fish species, of which twenty were first reported for this region. Carangidae, Lutjanidae, and Scombridae were the richest families, which together represent 14 % of the total number of species. According to the Red List of Marine Fishes of Colombia, 37 species show some degree of threat. Most species are demersal, associated with soft bottoms. However, a significant number of species were also found associated with hard substrates, suggesting that fish congregate around these less abundant substrates, as the coastline is mainly dominated by fine sediments. This study reveals that this region has higher fish richness than previously thought and highlights the need to carry out further studies to increase the knowledge of the ichthyofauna, framed in the environmental setting of the Department's coastal zone and the anthropogenic influence on the group in question. Better knowledge of the richness of ichthyic species contributes indirectly to the improvement of current management plans for marine biodiversity conservation.","PeriodicalId":55293,"journal":{"name":"Caldasia","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
