The aim of this study was to isolate Borrelia strains and determine the prevalence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato and B. miyamotoi in adults of Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus) collected in 2019 in the two regions of the country (Coastal-Karst and Littoral-Inner Carniola) by cultivation and PCR. We isolated B. burgdorferi s.l. by culture method in 28/559 (5%) ticks from both regions. Culture-negative samples (531/559, i.e., 95%) were additionally tested by real-time PCR. In 155/531 (29.2%) PCR-positive samples, a fragment of flaB or glpQ was amplified and further sequenced to identify species of the Borrelia. Using both methods, cultivation and PCR, Borrelia spp. prevalence was 32.7% in the Coastal-Karst region and 33.0% in the Littoral-Inner Carniola region. Genotyping of the Borrelia spp. isolates revealed that 17/28 (60%) were B. garinii subtype Mlg2. Of all tick samples tested for B. miyamotoi 8/398 (2%) were PCR positive. Based on previous studies in these regions, we had expected more ticks to be infected with B. afzelii, but genotyping revealed that B. garinii was the most abundant.</p>","PeriodicalId":55154,"journal":{"name":"Folia Parasitologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9644156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The host range of Andrya is puzzling, because it is the only genus of anoplocephalid (s. s.) cestodes parasitising both rodents and lagomorphs. The present morphological analysis shows that the American species of Andrya share multiple consistent features, in which they differ from those of A. rhopalocephala and the morphologically related Neandrya cuniculi (Blanchard, 1891). The main differences concern the position of the uterus with respect to the longitudinal osmoregulatory canals and testes. Consequently, a new genus Andryoides gen. n. is proposed for the American species, resulting in the following combinations: Andryoides neotomae (Voge, 1946) comb. n. (type species), Andryoides octodonensis (Babero et Cattan, 1975) comb. n., Andryoides vesicula (Haverkost et Gardner, 2010) comb. n. and Andryoides boliviensis (Haverkost et Gardner, 2010) comb. n. However, A. boliviensis is regarded here as a junior synonym of A. vesicula (new synonymy). The present study also defines the morphological key features for all the valid genera of cestodes of the family Anoplocephalidae (s. s.), and discusses the phylogenetic affinities and historical biogeography of Andryoides and other endemic American anoplocephalid cestodes.</p>","PeriodicalId":55154,"journal":{"name":"Folia Parasitologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9233785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human infection is commonly asymptomatic, multifaceted, and can manifest in severe pathological forms in congenital toxoplasmosis and immunocompromised individuals. This study attempted to recognise the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in Iranian residents referred to medical laboratories for toxoplasmosis tests throughout the country. This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from 2015 to 2019 on individuals referred to diagnostic laboratories in 26 provinces, and these laboratories sent their samples to the referral centres. Accordingly, data associated with serodiagnosis of toxoplasmosis, age, sex, anti-T. gondii IgG, and IgM status in Iranian residents were collected from two referral diagnostic laboratories. All individuals were evaluated using the antibody immunocapture-chemiluminescence assay (CLIA) method with the Immulite<sup>®</sup>2000s XPi system. In this study, the first large-scale assay of T. gondii infection in Iran, an overall seroprevalence of 30.4% was among 35,047 patients examined. The highest IgM seropositivity rate was in the 10-20 years old patients. In addition, this study showed a very different prevalence of T. gondii across the country, highest in the humid areas, such as the Caspian Sea basin in the North, and the North West with seroprevalence of 48.6%.</p>","PeriodicalId":55154,"journal":{"name":"Folia Parasitologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9228051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spinitectus petterae was described from North African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), whereas S. polli infects squeakers, Synodontis spp. During parasitological surveys in the Vaal River system (Orange River catchment), Spinitectus specimens were collected from C. gariepinus. These systems are adjacent but not connected. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the specimens collected using morphological and molecular techniques. The morphological study included light and scanning electron microscopy of whole specimens and excised spicules. Specimens were genetically characterised using 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA and cox1 mtDNA. Additionally, immature specimens of S. petterae were collected near the type locality. Morphological characteristics were most similar to S. petterae from C. gariepinus, whereas genetic data were dissimilar to all available data for the genus. Additional morphological characteristics noted for S. petterae in the present study were the details of the left and right spicule structure and the porous structures on the pseudolabia. Specimens from the Vaal River system differed from those originally described as S. petterae by additional spines posterior to the third ring, lacking caudal alae and variable total body and male oesophagus length. Based on 18S rDNA, haplotypes from the type locality varied only slightly from the study material, supporting the morphological identification. However, 28S rDNA and, more conspicuously, cox1 mtDNA displayed substantial variation between specimens from these localities, which needs further investigation. Haplotypes generated in the present study were highly dissimilar to those characterised for S. petterae from Tanzania and Egypt. Nevertheless, the nematodes collected from C. gariepinus in the Vaal River system are considered S. petterae. This study expands the geographical distribution and adds additional morphological and genetic information for S. petterae, contributing to the limited knowledge of African species of Spinitectus.</p>","PeriodicalId":55154,"journal":{"name":"Folia Parasitologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10534476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Out of 227 positive animals, all were positive for paramphistome and five for fasciolid eggs. Molecular analysis of the ITS2 rDNA revealed the presence of Calicophoron daubneyi (Dinnik, 1962) and Fasciola hepatica Linnaeus, 1758. Faecal egg count (FEC) showed low infection intensity (12 EPG) in animals infected with F. hepatica and high variability in C. daubneyi infections (2-589 EPG). Efficacy of oxyclozanide, albendazole, ivermectin, and closantel against C. daubneyi infection was evaluated at eight beef cattle herds. Faecal samples were collected from all positive animals at 0 and 21days post-treatment. Based on FEC, albendazole, ivermectin and closantel reduced the number of C. daubneyi eggs shed by 0-9.9%, with no effect on the number of infected animals. The use of oxyclozanide on two beef farms showed 100% efficacy against C. daubneyi and F. hepatica. Follow-up examination 5-6 months after drug application showed reinfection of most animals with C. daubneyi, but the FEC was significantly lower. The finding of four dairy cows infected with C. daubneyi housed in a stable without pasture suggests the possibility of the infection being introduced through roughage.</p>","PeriodicalId":55154,"journal":{"name":"Folia Parasitologica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10569794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
