Nowadays, many biodiesel production units use a mixture of virgin vegetable oils and waste cooking oils. The examined unit will use only waste cooking oil as raw material. Thus, two different methods for biodiesel production are assessed on a financial basis for different biodiesel prices. The investigated methods are the alkaline transesterification (a very common biodiesel production method) and the supercritical transesterification (a method with non sensitivity in moisture and free fatty acids and thus not requiring a pre-treatment stage). According to the financial evaluation, the acceptance of the project for each technology is strongly affected by biodiesel’s price. The results showed that the alkaline transesterification based project is accepted for the whole examined prices’ range while for supercritical transesterification, the project is accepted for biodiesel prices of about 0.75-0.85 €/L.","PeriodicalId":55087,"journal":{"name":"Global Nest Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"1019-1168"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2014-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69259486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, the distribution of pollutant sources and emission patterns has changed with a subsequent effect on the distribution of photochemical pollutants and aerosols. The purpose of the present work is to perform a comparative study of the land u se changes in the rapidly developing Attica Peninsula including the Greater Athens Area (GAA) before and after 2004, the year that the Olympic Games took place, as well as of the effect of these changes on the respective pollutant distribution profiles. Th e land use data were provided by USGS Global Land Use/Land Cover version 2.0 Database and the updating process was fulfilled with the help of a satellite image. The area was divided into cells using a spatial resolution of 5x5 km 2 . Results showed that theurban grid has expanded considerably the past fifteen years while a great shift of population has been made to the eastern area of Attica. Also, new towns were created while others expanded and many factories moved out of the center of the city of Athens. Moreover, the forest land has decreased considerably in the Attica Peninsula either by continuous and extended fires or by the residential burst. The Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extensions (CAMx) was used in order to estimate O 3distribution durin g a recorded pollution episode. Results revealed that land use changes affected slightly the O 3 concentrations and the development of a new emission","PeriodicalId":55087,"journal":{"name":"Global Nest Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2013-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69259472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Present investigation intended for COD and color removal from textile wastewater using naturally prepared coagulants i.e. Surjana Seed Powder (SSP), Maize Seed Powder (MSP) and Chitosan. Effect of coagulant dose, flocculation time and temperature has been studied. The Sludge Volume Index (SVI) and turbidity were examined for various effects. SSP was more effective than Chitosan and MSP for the removal of COD and color and also, Chitosan was more efficient than SSP and MSP considering SVI and turbidity. Maximum percentage reduction corresponds to 75.6 and 62.8 was obtained for removal of COD and color respectively, using SSP.","PeriodicalId":55087,"journal":{"name":"Global Nest Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"522-528"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69259392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Organic compounds in water become a problem in drinking water treatment, especially during water disinfection with chlorine, when harmful disinfection by-products like trihalomethanes appear. Therefore, the removal of disinfection by-products (DBP)precursors gains high importance. This paper deals with the efficiency of NOM removal from groundwater by the Fenton’s process and its influence on trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP). In this research performance of Fenton process at conditions close to conditions of natural groundwater was investigated. pH value was not decreased under 4.5 and attempt was done to perform Fenton’s process at natural iron concentration in groundwater of town Osijek area. Once optimized, process achieved about 50% removal of TOC(2.5 mM H2O2 ; 0.1 mM Fe2+ ; pH 4.5) and decrease of THMFP (A254/A203)for about 70% (5mM H2O2 ; 0.1 mM Fe2+ ; pH 4.5). Under adequate conditions Fenton's process could be successfully used for the removal of organic contaminants from groundwater.","PeriodicalId":55087,"journal":{"name":"Global Nest Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"13-20"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69258442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first synthetic effluent (SE1) is a Remazol Black B aqueous solution, while the second one (SE2) is an aqueous mixture of sixteen dyes and auxiliary chemicals that are usually employed in the textile industry. Various illumination sources were studied, while emphasis was given on the use of simulated and natural solar light. Results indicated that the use of solar irradiation can constitute an advantageous treatment strategy, due to its energy efficient and environmentally friendly operation, for textile dyehouse effluents. Specifically, it was observed that total decolorization and mineralization of SE1 occurred after about 120 min and 300 min, respectively, in the presence of at least 2 g L TiO2, under natural sunlight. On the other hand, total decolorization of SE2 was achieved only after 300 min of photocatalytic treatment, while COD removal practically remained unchanged, at about 20%, regardless the applied operating parameters, due to the presence of other organic and inorganic substances. Furthermore, it was found that process efficiency was significantly affected by the catalyst loading.","PeriodicalId":55087,"journal":{"name":"Global Nest Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"21-28"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69258717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to determine the favourable features of tree species, which can grow in the city, for human bioclimatic comfort conditions. For this ai m, measurements of climatic elements (temperature, humidity, and wind) were carried out under different tree canopies in the Ataturk University Ata Botanic Garden in July and August 2008. For the calculation of bioclimatic conditions, one of the most widel y used indices, THI (Thermo hygrometric Index) was used based solely on the data of clear and calm days during the measurement period. From the results of the study, it was found that the canopy of Scotch pine trees can provide the most comfortable environ ment by increasing human thermal condition by 5.1 %, followed by Silver birch trees by 3.8 % which increased human thermal condition when compared to open space while mixed canopy did not give the respective results. Some suggestions about the use of plantmaterials in recreational areas are presented .","PeriodicalId":55087,"journal":{"name":"Global Nest Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"131-139"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69259302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this work is to present the results derived from an analysis of hourly surface ozone concentrations, measured at the urban station of Volos, a coastal medium-sized city at the eastern seaboard of Central Greece, during the 8-year period 2001-2008. The regional climate that is characterized by hot and dry summers with intense sunshine plays an important role in the observed exceedances of the air quality ozone limits. The analysis showed that, ozone diurnal patterns depict daytime photochemical ozone built up, during the sunlight hours of the day. It is remarkable that the maximum daily 8-h averages often exceeded the standard value that is assigned by the EU Directive for human health protection, during almost the warm period of the year, mainly at noon and afternoon hours.","PeriodicalId":55087,"journal":{"name":"Global Nest Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69259460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
