Generating energy from ambient signals or a dedicated source improves the chances of replacing conventional battery-based systems. Batteries have been the most important power source in applications where mobility is essential. These portable devices eliminated the need for extensive transmission cables and ac power outlets. From watches to automobiles, batteries reigned as the power source over many decades. However, as time goes on, the disposal of dead batteries poses a relevant concern and real threat. Harmful chemicals, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, zinc, and chromium <xref ref-type="bibr" r xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">[1]</xref>\u0000, from dumped batteries can change the soil composition, which affects agriculture and, eventually, the biochain. With the evolving food chain, these harmful compounds affect the equilibrium of the entire ecosystem. Therefore, a viable replacement for battery-based devices becomes imperative.

There are three types of metamaterials: 1) single negative, where the material has either a negative permittivity value or a negative permeability value; 2) double negative, the most common type, in which both permeability and permittivity have negative values; and 3) zero index, where either <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">${epsilon}$</tex-math></inline-formula> or <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">${mu}$</tex-math></inline-formula> is zero, which leads to a zero-refractive index. In 1968, Veselago <xref ref-type="bibr" r xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">[2]</xref> studied these types of materials theoretically and discovered various fascinating properties, including the Doppler effect reversal, reversal of Snell’s law, change in the reflection properties of a concave and convex lens, and reversal of the boundary conditions used to analyze an EM wave interaction with a medium. An important characteristic of a double-negative metamaterial is its ability to support wave transmission in the reverse direction, where the phase and group velocities exhibit opposing orientations, (i.e., the incident wave direction is opposite to that of the maximum power). By employing a repetitive arrangement of thin wires with periodicity <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$p$</tex-math></inline-formula> and diameter <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$a$</tex-math></inline-formula>\u0000, as shown in <xref ref-type="fig" r xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Figure 1(a)</xref>\u0000, Pendry et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" r xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">[3]</xref> have obtained negative permittivity.

The session was financially sponsored by IEEE WPTCE2024, the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Ad Hoc Committee, as well as the IEEE Power and Electronics Society (PEL-S) WIE, and technically supported by the MTT-S Women in Microwaves (WIM). The event was organized by Prof. Qiaowei Yuan of the Tohoku Institute of Technology, Japan. The primary objective of the session was to underscore the significance of D&I activities for the broad IEEE community, shed light on the ongoing initiatives of the MTT-S and PEL-S, and explore the way forward in the future. Additionally, the aim was to discuss the interconnections among D&I activities and other affinity groups, such as WIM and Young Professionals. Two months before the event, the organizing team conducted a survey on both Google and the WeChat platforms to facilitate broad participation from users worldwide. The session was conducted both online and offline to ensure widespread participation.
