In 2019, the country launched its National Decarbonization Plan (NDP), presenting concrete actions in the short, mid, and long terms to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. The decarbonization of the transport sector is critical to meet this target as it accounts for more than 50% of the country’s net emissions. Plus, it can benefit from its nearly 100% renewable electricity system and its abundant renewable sources to feed the future energy demand for transportation, thus increasing energy independence.","PeriodicalId":55020,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Power & Energy Magazine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135112185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2022, a record 700,000 U.S. homeowners installed solar, while nearly one in 10 cars purchased in the United States was an electrical vehicle (EV) ( <xref ref-type=\"fig\" rid=\"fig1\" xmlns:mml=\"http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">Figure 1</xref> ). In California, recent legislative reform incentivized the installation of home battery storage systems for load shifting, while Senate bill SB 233 requires that all EVs are capable of bidirectional charging. The bill was also designed to reverse a troubling trend: In recent years, Californians have increasingly responded to power outages and rolling blackouts by purchasing diesel-propelled backup generators. In contrast, some EV batteries now have the ability to power a home for up to three days and so are considered a “green” alternative to diesel generators. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Order No. 2222 has also increased the competitiveness of distributed energy resources (DERs) by enabling them to participate in regional wholesale markets through aggregations. Indeed, commercial equipment combining bidirectional EV charging and solar energy conversion that fully integrates with home battery storage can be leveraged as DERs. This can significantly improve grid reliability, while deferring costly infrastructure upgrades and enhancing decentralized resiliency by powering homes during blackouts.","PeriodicalId":55020,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Power & Energy Magazine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135112192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Is this the new paradigm? The ambitious goals set by governments worldwide to phase out gasoline-powered cars are the driving force behind the upgrade of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures. The EV industry and roadways departments may be asked to invest more in wireless charging, that is, without the need for any cable. Transmitter pads that can charge the EV in the garage, or even briefly at traffic lights, may convey the stationary wireless charge, whereas coils embedded into roadways may power EVs as they drive overhead. The standardized wireless charge appears to be the optimum solution to placate the anxiety of drivers.","PeriodicalId":55020,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Power & Energy Magazine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135112184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To be effective as a decarbonization action, it involves two parallel tracks: shifting energy demand from fossil fuels to electricity and increasing renewable energy grid integration. Together, these parallel tracks form the cornerstone of many countries’ climate action plans. The past decade has seen strong progress in some countries in the grid integration of renewables. This progress and the promise to further increase renewables on the grid opens up the opportunity to decarbonize sections of our whole energy system via electrification.","PeriodicalId":55020,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Power & Energy Magazine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135112173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Korean government raised electric vehicle (EV) and renewables targets to realize carbon neutrality by 2050. The government is also making efforts to utilize EV batteries as a flexible resource to help with the grid connection of massive renewables. Time-of-use (TOU) tariffs and a demand response (DR) program have been introduced to facilitate more daytime charging from photovoltaic (PV) generation and reduce solar curtailment. An ac vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system is also a reality and is being applied to mass produce EVs, and demonstrations are underway. As the introduction of more EV models and the supply chain normalize, EV sales will increase rapidly. Consequently, now is the time for Korea to prepare for and fully embrace a more grid-friendly charging infrastructure for the future.","PeriodicalId":55020,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Power & Energy Magazine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135111998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are here to stay as a critical component in the decarbonization of our transport. According to the International Energy Agency, from 2017 to 2022 alone, EV sales (battery and plug-in hybrids) went from 1 million to more than 10 million. In 2022, 14% of all new cars sold globally were electric. In China, where half of the world’s EVs reside, the share of EVs in total car sales reached 29% in 2022. In Europe, the second largest market, more than one in every five cars sold was electric. In the United States, the share of EVs in total car sales reached almost 8%. With more EVs, of course, comes more electricity demand. This means we also need to ensure that EVs and the grid, particularly the distribution grid, can work together.","PeriodicalId":55020,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Power & Energy Magazine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135112535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
