To manage agricultural risks, farmers can implement a wide range of instruments, such as crop diversification, the use of sales contracts, or agricultural insurance, among others. The main objective of this paper is to analyze, from a comprehensive perspective, the main factors explaining the adoption of a set of eleven risk management instruments considering a sample of irrigated farmers in a Mediterranean agricultural system using logistic regression models. For the first objective we took a representative sample of 30 dairy farms located in the autonomous community of Castilla y Leon during the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. From each of these farms we obtained data regarding livestock censuses, structure of tangible assets, income, costs and other variables that allow us to assess their economic-financial situation and to build the profitability indicators. To achieve the second objective, an ordinary least squares estimation over two multivariate econometric specifications was made, one for each indicator. The livestock sector has a remarkable role and significant potential for the implementation and achievement of these objectives, focusing its possible interventions from different perspectives that will be developed throughout this article. Approaches include the general relationships between the SDGs and livestock, various strategies for the implementation of the SDGs, the impact of the climate crisis on animal production and its implications at social level.
