The aim of this study was to understand the effects of two invasive watermilfoil species (Myriophyllum heterophyllum Michx. and Myriophyllum spicatum L.) on native macrophyte communities and to assess community response to a range of invasion intensities as well as examine the influence of canopy types. We hypothesized that some communities would be more sensitive to invasion, and that some canopy species would facilitate watermilfoil presence. We used a novel approach to give better representation of the 3D aspect of the community which involved employing a modified quadrat approach to sample at two Connecticut lakes. Results show that watermilfoil invasion has a significant negative effect on native species richness. Floating canopy does not vary with invasion intensity, but submerged canopy does. One species, (Utricularia purpurea Walter), was associated with high native species richness and rarely occurred with invasive species. The results identify potential species that are disproportionally threatened by invasive species, as well as identifying invasion indicator species. The success of pumpkinseed in novel ecosystems has been associated with its generalist diet, but this trait remains unevaluated in arid regions. Desert rivers are harsh environments with limited water and prey availability which may adversely constrain the diet of fish. Here we studied the diet of pumpkinseed across 4 sites in the Draa River, embracing a 450 m elevational gradient covering from extremely dry lowlands to relatively humid highlands. We described pumpkinseed diet through the analysis of stomach contents of 82 individuals, collected in the fall of 2013. Pumpkinseed diet was dominated by Chironomidae in dry lowlands, while Ephemeroptera, Heteroptera, Trichoptera and Odonata were relevant prey in more humid highlands. Population diet breadth expanded with elevation, but individual specialization in diet was low among all sites. In Croatian watercourses, three members of the genusBarbusare found,B. balcanicus,B. barbusandB. plebejus, each occupying a specific ecological niche. This study examined cytochromeb(cytb), a common genetic marker used to describe the structure and origin of fish populations to perform a phylogenetic reconstruction of the Danube barbel. Two methods of phylogenetic inference were used: maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML), which yielded well supported trees of similar topology. The Median joining network (MJ) was generated and corroborated to show the divergence of three lineages ofBarbus balcanicuson the Balkan Peninsula: Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian lineages that separated at the beginning of the Pleistocene. Croatian lineage ofB. balcanicusshows a uniform structure with many recently diverged haplotypes, which was further supported by the star-like shape of the MJ network. Effective size estimates were obtained for populations inhabiting separate river catchments and the results imply the good reproductive potential ofBarbus balcanicusin Croatia, which is in positive correlation with the overall high genetic diversity calculated for its populations. This species was widely used as a garden plant until 2016, when it was identified as invasive. In this study, we conducted a mesocosm experiment to compare the morphological traits, includingtotal dry mass, shoot/root (S/R) ratio, relative growth rate (RGR) and competition index log response ratio (ln RR), of C. caroliniana and two frequently co-occurring native submerged plants, water thyme (Hydrilla verticillata) and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum). The results demonstrated that C. caroliniana did not show more advantageous traits (higher total dry mass, S/R ratio and RGR) or have a lower ln RR than H. verticillata or M. spicatum. We provide a counterexample to commonly accepted thought in which the successful invasion of invasive species may not be explained by outcompeting native plants. In response, managing authorities may increase frequency and intensity of aquatic plant removal (weed cutting) to lower the water level in rivers possibly impairing physical and hydromorphological stream conditions. We studied 32 Danish lowland streams subjected to three different weed cutting practices, representing a gradient in weed cutting intensity, and uncut controls to compare physical and hydromorphological habitat quality parameters among stream groups. Moreover, we measured short-term changes in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and suspended sediment (SS) transport in two streams before, during, and just after weed cutting for the least and most pervasive weed cutting method, respectively. Our results indicated a lower habitat quality affiliated with increasing intensity of weed cutting practice, notably an association with silt cover at the expense of hard substrate. DO concentrations were relatively unaltered but an abrupt increase in SS transport comparable to storm events was observed during cutting with the most pervasive method. Environmental factors and the potential of ostracods as indicators of spring type were analysed. The analysis involved the type of spring, substrate, physicochemical parameters, and the river valley's hydrological status as environmental factors. A total of thirty ostracod species were recorded. The average count of ostracod individuals in a sample amounted to 100. The assemblages were dominated by juvenile Candona sp., juvenile Psychrodromus sp., Cypria ophtalmica, and Cypridopsis vidua. The spring species accounted for less than 1% of the individual counts, except for juvenile Psychrodromus sp. with 21% and Eucypris pigra with 4%. The average number of taxa per spring was 5. The ostracod assemblages were significantly influenced by limnocrene springs, spring flooding by the river overflow, the presence of coarse leaf litter, the presence of fine organic matter, a high content of NH4 as well as by BOD5, conductivity, pH, Fe, the river habitat modification index (RHM), the habitat modification score (HMS), and the river habitat quality (RHQ). The habitat conditions for the spring species appeared to be enhanced by the domination of mineral substrate over fine particulate organic matter, an elevated pH, the presence of leaf-derived organic matter, and the absence of flooding by the river. In general, it is assumed that this species has negative effects on native aquatic turtles based on experiments conducted under controlled conditions. Here, we analysed a 7‒year time series (2013‒2019) of data from captures of three species of turtles (two natives and one alien) from natural populations in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula. We evaluated (i) the interspecific spatial overlap and (ii) the correlation between the scaled mass index (SMI) of the native turtles and the abundance of T. scripta, including an interaction effect between the species. The analyses revealed that T. scripta has relatively low spatial overlap with Emys orbicularis but high overlap with Mauremys leprosa. Overall, the abundance of T. scripta was not associated with significant variations in the SMI of the native species, although for the female E. orbicularis, we detected a negative trend. The analyses also indicated that the abundance of T. scripta does not have an additive effect on the SMI of other turtles, even if there is a negative effect between native species. The area has experienced many fish introductions over the years, but the overall information about non-native fishes in the three SC countries, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia did not exist. Although these three countries belong to the Kura River drainage, Caspian Sea basin (only the western half of Georgia drains into the Black Sea), the legislative framework for each country regarding introduction of non-native fish species and their treatment is different and poorly developed. The goal of the present study was to make an initial inventory of non-native fish species in the three SC countries, and summarize the existing knowledge as a basis for future risk assessment models and formulation of regional management policies. Here, we present a unified list of 27 non-native species recorded in the wild in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Among these 27 species, eight were translocated from the Black Sea basin to the Caspian Sea basin.
