The visualisation of antiquities had a clear political purpose: to strengthen the fascist historic imagery while celebrating the myth of romanità and the ideal connection existing between the metropole and the colony. At the same time, it was meant to emphasise the theme of modernity, showing the intimate relation of science and technology with the preservation of the ancient world. Starting from the role that the regime assigned to Libyan antiquities, the present article focuses on such relation and examines the use of a specific means of communication: archeological photography. Divested of its scientific value, archeological photography was not used simply to document the excavation activities, but rather to legitimise the superiority of Italian science, which could bring Rome’s past back to life in territories that had now been reconquered. In this sense, the visualisation of historical evidence further legitimised Italian domination over the colony, providing the fascist colonial archive with new themes.","PeriodicalId":54710,"journal":{"name":"Nuncius-Journal of the History of Science","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74800617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While some aspects of this connection, such as the interplay between archaeology and Catalan nationalism and the contribution of the archaeologist Pere Bosch Gimpera are well known, other key developments of the period remain largely unstudied. This is the case of the Iconographic Repertoire of Spain, an archive set up in 1915 by the architects and art historians Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Jeroni Martorell with the purpose of visually documenting Spain’s art history. This article fills this gap by exploring the political and epistemological significance of archaeological research and of archaeological “photo-objects” in the making of the Repertoire. In particular, it discusses the role of Iberian culture within the Repertoire; the setting up of a nation-wide archive from a peripheral location such as Barcelona; and the connection of the Repertoire to the utopia of the “total photo archive”.","PeriodicalId":54710,"journal":{"name":"Nuncius-Journal of the History of Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74139088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes the practices and the self-understanding of half a dozen paleoartists, in part based on interviews. It will ask the following questions: How does one become a paleoartist, what skills and what knowledge are required? How are reconstructions of Australopithecines and Neanderthals actually manufactured? How do paleoartists deal with the notorious gaps in the fossil record? The claim for scientific rigor, the artist’s quest for creativity and the market forces, demanding visually attractive representations of early humans, are in constant tension. The paper analyses how paleoartists, paleoanthropologists (advisors) and museum curators (sponsors) interact and negotiate contested issues. It will argue that these reconstructions of hominids shape not only the perception of our ancestors of the general public but also influence the knowledge production of the human origin researchers themselves.","PeriodicalId":54710,"journal":{"name":"Nuncius-Journal of the History of Science","volume":"233 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76221926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its scientific nature, combined with the proximity between its subject, material findings, and the cultural heritage of certain groups, entails that its history is key to understanding the interactions between science and its public.
