The discharge took place between a virtual cathode and a mesh anode similar to a pulsed virtual cathode oscillator or vircators. The electric potential, electric field and space charge density of the glow discharge have been obtained in the axial and radial part of the glow discharge. The location of the virtual cathode was found at around 0.7 cm from the mesh anode. The axial and radial distributions of electron temperature and ion density have been measured using a double electric probe. Three types of insulating media have been used: vacuum, SF6 and N2. Additionally, three different electrode materials have been implemented: copper, steel and tungsten. The following characteristics have been tested experimentally: the influence of insulating gas parameters on spark gap operation, the influence of the polarity of working and trigger voltages on spark gap operation, and the influence of the rate of rise of the trigger voltage on spark gap operation and the degree of spark gap irreversibility. Faster ions (FIs) can be the characteristic of reactor-size stellarators in the long mean free path regime. The presence of the helical divertor offers new opportunities for studying FI loss by measuring ion fluxes and energies in the divertor plasma. Ion energy distributions were measured in divertor flows in two symmetric poloidal cross-sections in several field periods. It is shown that FI flows out to the divertor mainly on the ion B×∇B drift side in accordance with the assumptions of a determinative FI contribution to the plasma divertor flow vertical asymmetry inherent to torsatrons/heliotrons. Strong toroidal non-uniformities in flows and energies of ions outflowing into the divertor are observed. In air, at a pressure of 1 atm with a sharply non-uniform electric field, an SAEB is generated from the inter-electrode gap at a solid angle exceeding 2π sr. Reduction of gap d between the cathode and the anode leads to a decrease in the current amplitude of the beam incident on the lateral walls of the gas-filled diode and in an increase in the pulse duration of the beam current both in the axial and radial directions. Pulses of the beam current initiated on the lateral surface of a tube cathode have been recorded. It is found that electron temperature, electron density and electron energy distribution function decrease with the gas filling pressure. Nitriding of aluminum alloy (Al–Mg2–Si) is performed for various time durations (3, 6, 9 and 12 h) and pressures (1 and 2 mbar) by keeping the input power (100 W) and substrate temperature (250 °C) constant. To explore the surface properties induced by plasma, X-ray diffractometer, optical micrography, atomic force microscopy and Vickers micro-hardness tester diagnostic techniques are used. Results exhibit the formation of cubic aluminum nitride. A significant increase in surface hardness is observed when samples are exposed at 1 mbar pressure for 12 h of processing time. It is shown that the ‘3-mode’ error field produced by the global asymmetry of the building is about 2×10−6 of the toroidal magnetic field. Analysis of error fields caused by local asymmetry of the ferromagnetic elements was performed for the one nearest to the tokamak ferromagnetic structure, bioshield. It was shown that the bioshield produces an error field less than 10−5 of the toroidal magnetic field. Under ultra-high vacuum conditions, the electron plasma is confined radially using a 5 T magnetic field and axially by using a harmonic potential well of depth 1000 V. Electron plasma of density higher than 1×1011 cm−3 was confined in the MRT, and the number of trapped electrons can be controlled by changing the trap depth and the trap length. The conceptual design of the device performed by MATLAB is based on the three-phase theory of the plasma focus mechanism. We tried to design a convenient control unit which automatically controls charge–discharge processes. Optimum pressures at various applied voltages, a linear dependence between the plasma pinch current and applied voltage at the optimum pressure with Ar and Ne as working gases and also the focusing time proportional to the gas pressure with Ar were obtained experimentally.
