In addition the Office for Nuclear Regulation will scrutinise designs, management controls and processes prior to giving permission for any works to start. This paper discusses the additional considerations for design and implementation of temporary works on UK nuclear sites. It includes case studies showing the steps taken to obtain nuclear safety committee and regulatory permission for tower cranes and a climbing scaffold for constructing a nuclear class 1 concrete structure in Cumbria.","PeriodicalId":54573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Civil Engineering","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75157692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a study based on interviews with construction professionals, four potential solutions to reducing construction waste emerged as: waste-driven designs, digital innovations in waste management, life-cycle assessment decision making and collaboration within the supply chain. The results of the study will help decision makers build a sustainable waste-reduction framework for construction and infrastructure projects.","PeriodicalId":54573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Civil Engineering","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87510383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project involved designing and deploying of an in situ remediation system driven entirely by photovoltaic energy. Over 22 months it recovered 6100 l of hazardous coal tar and creosote from a 9.5 m deep infilled former gas holder tank in Gateshead, northeast England. This paper describes how options appraisal, stakeholder mapping and sustainability assessment led to a genuinely low emissions, cost-effective and durable treatment solution with the highest health and safety standards.","PeriodicalId":54573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Civil Engineering","volume":"94 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74750777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With a main span of 760 m, the 2022 structure is also the first of its kind to use a non-axial-force connection at mid-span and a steel and ultra-high performance concrete lightweight composite construction for the main-span girder. This paper describes the configuration of the non-axial-force connection, the arrangement of the composite girder and a new steel–concrete deck joint. It also explains how construction challenges were innovatively resolved by new closure and segmental precast erection methods.","PeriodicalId":54573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers-Civil Engineering","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78090914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
