Amid these conditions, septic amputations have emerged as a desperate, life-saving measure for patients with severe limb wound infections. This article examines the rise of such procedures, drawing from contextual analysis and firsthand cases at Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Hospital. It also highlights doctors' observation of how delayed access to care, lack of sterile tools, antibiotic shortages, and multidrug-resistant infections have often made limb salvage impossible. These amputations, while medically necessary, reflect the collapse of trauma care and underscore the urgent need for adaptable humanitarian intervention, standards, and call for the protection of health care facilities and services continuity.</p>","PeriodicalId":54390,"journal":{"name":"Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness","volume":" ","pages":"e261"},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2025-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145014443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One component of the disaster response was for a PHS RDF to establish a Federal Medical Station and work with other federal and civilian partners to provide health care to individuals with chronic medical conditions that routinely required additional support for activities of daily living. These individuals were usually housed in private residences or residential facilities and were displaced by the disaster. The operational model was to gather the target population in a temporary facility, assess the needs of each individual and accompanying caretakers, provide health care and social support, and plan a discharge to either an intermediate facility or return to their original residence, if conditions became appropriate. RDF PHS-1 developed approaches for assessment, tracking, planning, resource utilization, and decision making that were field tested, refined them, and then validated their utility. In large-scale radiological/nuclear incidents, multiple retrospective dosimetry laboratories from several countries may be involved in providing timely dose estimates for effective medical management of several thousand exposed individuals. In such scenarios, the harmonization of methods among participating laboratories is crucial for consistency in data analysis, dose estimation, and medical decision-making. In this regard, ISO documents ensure that these practices are standardized globally across the laboratories by providing quality assurance and quality control documentation that guide laboratories in maintaining high-quality performance for consistency. With the intent of bringing standardization and harmonization of biological and physical retrospective dosimetry methodologies across national and international laboratories, the ISO working group 18 (WG18) was established under ISO/TC85/SC2 (Technical Committee 85, Subcommittee 2-Radiation Protection) in 1999.
