The survey, which included more than 7,000 nurses, identified that 56% of nurses experienced symptoms of burnout that they attributed to staffing issues, increasing numbers of patients, poor leadership, and the time needed to complete administrative duties. Although burnout was high, only one-third of respondents reported that they were currently receiving mental health support; reported barriers included a lack of time, feeling that they should be able to handle their own mental health, and cost. Overall, 65% of nurses reported feeling “a great deal of stress” related to their jobs. Reports of stress and anxiety slightly improved from previous years’ surveys; however, reports of positive emotions (eg, feeling grateful or empowered) decreased. The report outlines actions to take to address mental health and wellness, such as addressing structural aspects of the job that affect workload (eg, using technology, delegating tasks), providing flexible work options (eg, start time, shift length), improving access to evidence-based mental health resources (eg, behavioral health concierge, peer-to-peer support), and strengthening skills and abilities (eg, training on conflict resolution).</p>\u0000<p><b>Read more:</b> https://www.nursingworld.org/practice-policy/work-environment/health-safety/disaster-preparedness/coronavirus/what-you-need-to-know/survey-4/</p>","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"41 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139967831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Writing can help perioperative nurses grow their professional careers and advance the science of the perioperative nursing specialty. Despite the value and importance of publishing, perioperative nurses may lack confidence and fear rejection and negative feedback; increasing their knowledge and understanding of the authoring and publishing processes can assuage these fears. This education article describes concepts associated with scholarly publishing for authors and offers strategies to encourage perioperative nurses to share their practice experiences or research via peer-reviewed journals. Key steps associated with the writing and publication process are described. The article also explains the editorial and peer-review processes and provides supportive strategies for authors when a manuscript is not accepted initially.","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"126 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139967928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been reported to contain toxic compounds (eg, hydrogen cyanide, benzene), bioaerosols, viruses (eg, human immunodeficiency virus), viable cancer cells, particles, blood fragments, and bacteria. Perioperative personnel, including surgeons, nurses, anesthesia professionals, and surgical technologists, are exposed to surgical smoke and its associated hazards (eg, respiratory, carcinogenic). To help protect personnel from these hazards and decrease their potential health risks, AORN recommends that health care organizations provide an environment free of surgical smoke, which includes using smoke evacuation and filtration in addition to room ventilation.<span><sup>1</sup></span>\u0000<figure>\u0000<div><picture>\u0000<source media=\"(min-width: 1650px)\" srcset=\"/cms/asset/17c2eb1f-67cd-4db4-9b79-fe967b0a96b6/aorn14106-fig-0001-m.jpg\"/><img alt=\"image\" data-lg-src=\"/cms/asset/17c2eb1f-67cd-4db4-9b79-fe967b0a96b6/aorn14106-fig-0001-m.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"/cms/asset/2aa7402a-ce4a-4cba-9804-c8f59e31b924/aorn14106-fig-0001-m.png\" title=\"image\"/></picture><p><b>Figure 1.</b> Best practices for surgical smoke evacuation and filtration.<span><sup>1</sup></span></p>\u0000</div>\u0000</figure>\u0000</div>","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"49 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139967843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Little is known about adherence to these safety measures or the perceived barriers and facilitators to adherence. This study used a cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence of pain and occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. We asked perioperative staff members about their perceived barriers and facilitators to adherence with safety measures. A total of 155 perioperative nurses in one health system completed the online survey (55% response rate). Most (93%) had experienced at least one musculoskeletal injury or disorder or related pain. Years worked as a perioperative nurse and having neck pain were associated with safety measure adherence. The most reported barrier to safety measure adherence was inadequate staffing. Study findings highlight the need for increased attention to the physical workload demands in the perioperative setting.","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"242 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139967825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adverse events continue to occur in perioperative areas and are likely underreported. The interdisciplinary nature and high cost of perioperative care may discourage personnel from speaking up for fear of retribution and punishment when reporting. Organization leaders can implement a just culture that focuses on improving patient care processes and safety rather than placing blame after an adverse event. A tenet of just culture is achieving balanced accountability between systems and individuals. Strategies for just culture implementation include leader support, policies and procedures for reporting, accessibility of reporting systems, provision of information for staff members, identification of support champions, and creation of a good catch program. Leaders also should measure and track progress associated with the just culture in their facility.</p>","PeriodicalId":54317,"journal":{"name":"Aorn Journal","volume":"119 2","pages":"152-160"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139565386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
